Rear-ended by a Texting Teenage Girl

My greatest fear in life is driving down the road and having a texting teenage girl cross the median, hit my car head-on and kill me.

Today I got the next best thing. A teenage girl rear-ended my beautiful, new BMW convertible. At least she has car insurance.

The question now is do her parents have life insurance on her, because I think I am going to track her down and kill her.

I am livid.

Cheers. - Frank

Most important thing is neither of you were hurt, although too bad about the BMW.... maybe it happened for a reason, or maybe she was jealous and decided to take matters into her own hands haha

In any case, hope you get it fixed, I'd go nuts if anyone smashed my LP560.

I can't believe it Frank. I would be livid too. That car is so beautiful. I was almost killed by an idiot on her cell phone. I really wanted to track her down and let her have it.

I hope you are not injured and am glad your are still able to post here.

I almost had a head on last Friday night with a drunk driver who was driving with no lights on.
Rounding a curve in my lane at night, I barely had time to jog the wheel to the right about 1/8th. No injuries, but she smashed my doors and quarter panel.

In my case, I just keep thinking how lucky I am to be uninjured, still able to drive my vehicle until replaced, and that we did catch her in a ditch down the road before she did more damage.

Road side sobriety, hell, she could not even stand straight. Literally, she tried one step and
they had to catch her fall and just put her back on the hood of the patrol car.

I do think they should show that girl pictures of coffins and wheel chairs, and ask her to imagine
talking to the parents and siblings of her friends if she ever put a friend in one of those.

I'm sorry to hear that Frank. Hope you can get it as good as new and her insurance pays.

Driving training in the US is pitiful, and to make matters worst, they have not outlawed holding your cell phone to your ear to make calls while driving, and unbelievably, Texting on them while driving. (at least in TX)

They banned all that in the UK and Europe years ago. Strange country the US.

Both are against the law here in Oregon. Of course, that doesn't stop the morons who ignore the law. It's sad that it often takes a tragedy before those who continue to do these things realize how stupid and dangerous they are, especially texting while driving.

Frank, really glad you're okay and the damage to your car was minor.

It's illegal here in NY, but that doesn't stop the a-holes around here from doing it. Even on the NYS Thruway, where the average speed during morning rush is about 80 mph.

I was almost smacked head on last week while riding my motorcycle when some young girl crossed the double yellow. She caught herself last second - but the best part was when I hit my horn she flipped me off like it was my fault...haha - gotta love NYers!

It's against the law here you will get a fine if caught and points on your license.... But sadly, it doesn't stop people and the accidents continue.... I think it's only when a life is lost that people stop doing it... Sad.

    Glad your alright though pal.

I wasn't injured at all. There was a local EMT team in the vehicle in front of me. Luckily I wasn't knocked into them. Before I knew it, I was being examined by one who didn't look old enough to drive. When I looked up at her I said, "Oh, my. I've died and there really are angels in heaven." (Never let a tragedy go to waste.) She was 20 years old and the cop that showed up was her ex-husband. The whole time he's filling out the paperwork I'm giving her the ol' "fate brought us together" routine. It was a hoot. Even her ex was shaking his head and laughing. I can be quite the character. lol

She works at the rescue squad just minutes from my house. She doesn't know it yet, but she is going to love the time we will be spending together.

Very minimal damage to the car, so things could be a lot worse. I do think I am going to have a very stiff neck in the morning. :-( That will be first time I have been stiff in a very long time. Old age sucks.

      Thanks, all for your concern.

      Cheers. - Frank

Where I almost got tripped up was as the cop was pulling up and she said, "Oh, crap - it's my ex-husband" I said to her, "C'mon, how can an 18 year old have an ex-husband. She replied, "I'm 20." I took her for a bit older than that. lol

Glad you're OK. My ma got rear-ended 7 years ago in a small car and it tore her back up pretty bad.

I'm not sure what the laws are in your state but you have to seek medical attention within 14 days in FL or you're S.O.L. should you ever end up hurting from it later on.

Be prepared to get nasty nasty with the insurance adjustor. They'll do the cheapest job they can. My TBird got rear-ended and they tried to force the repair shop to replace the full-width taillight assembly with a used one. Watch them like a hawk.

I on a State Route that had 2 lanes on each side with no divider (luckily) and I was in the left lane. A truck in the right lane was texting and approaching a slower moving car and decided to swerve to miss the slower car, of course without looking since they were texting. Luckily (but more scary) I was on my bike and was able to accelerate fast enough to not be hit. I then turned around to see the driver of the truck flipping me off, like I had done something wrong. About 20 seconds later, red lights. They got pulled over by a trooper. Justice was served. (Although it wasn't a girl, it was a younger looking boy...hopefully he learned his lesson and never texts again so that is now 1 less texting driver!)

I hate people that use their phone while driving, especially people texting. Not saying I've never done it myself because I have but not anymore. I do think videos etc can certainly help make people more aware of what damage it can do, after watching the below video on TV a few years back it kind of bought home what the consequences can be. Somebody's life wiped out and their families lives changed forever for nothing. At least it was only your car that was damaged but it definitely would make my blood boil as well.

Wow. I'm certainly aware that this could have been much worse. I can tell that I will need to go for x-rays and possibly see a doctor in the morning. My neck and shoulders are stiffening up and I have a splitting headache. I never get headaches. I don't think I have had one in the past 10 years. I know that's hard to believe, but it's the truth.

This is probably obvious, but just in case it isn't: Keep very careful records, including a diary, even if it's as simple as those two sentences, as well as all medical paperwork.

I (unfortunately) speak from personal experience: It's very difficult after a few weeks or months to remember such specifics, and yet these are the sorts of details that help build a case if you later find out that damages included more than just a few hundred dollars to your car.

Sorry to hear this all happened to you!

Good thing nobody was injured in the accident....
Let's face it, some people should not be allowed anywhere near a car... I've seen people on the phone, texting, reading a book, etc while driving...

I'm sure some feel the same way about their neck of the woods but damn Houston has some shitty drivers, makes me wonder if half of them even have a license...

Gee, Frank you did better than me, l went to a distant shopping centre today, thought that my car was stolen, and tripped on the cement footpath, (that was barely visible).

I know, that if l was an A****h*** l could sue them for a few thousand, and make up crap about it affecting my ability to work, etc.

But no shopping items were broken, and l just got a few blood dripping cuts on my left hand.

Nope. Not at all. I didn't look in the rear view util I heard the screeching of tires. lol

Today, while running an errand in the PT Cruiser a woman ran a stop sign and I almost plowed into her. She nonchalantly looked over and just kept on driving.

She's very lucky that I am probably the most defensive driver she'll ever counter. When I am in my car I have only one mindset and that is if you are in your car, you are out to kill me. It works, but it does lend itself to enjoyable driving.

As in thinking about one's self. What could possibly be more enjoyable than that??? That's why I never play the radio while I'm driving. It distracts me from thinking about me.

She's very lucky that I am probably the most defensive driver she'll ever counter. When I am in my car I have only one mindset and that is if you are in your car, you are out to kill me. It works, but it does lend itself to enjoyable driving.

I hear you about being a defensive driver since there's a lot of kooky stuff going on the roads these days with cell phones now added to the mix.

I stay in my lane and check at least 3 times before changing lanes and stay the hell away from the car in front of me.

I've avoided a few accidents by staying far away from the car in front of me.

I also check my rear and side mirrors every 10-15 seconds or so and immediately discourage anyone who attempts to tailgate me and always check my rear for someone who may rear end me when I'm coming to a stop. If a car is approaching me while I'm stopped - I flash by brakelights a couple time just to make sure.

I'm also a gentle hornblower such as when I'm going around a car, and I'm pretty sure I've helped others avoid a fews accidents by blowing my horn to warn other drivers of an impending possible crash.

When folks signal they're going to make a right turn, I do not trust them until they're clearly making the turn like when I'm coming out of parking lots etc.

        Be safe out there.

Your post indicates that you drive with the same cautiousness that I employ.

Now, If I could just get my 85 year old mother to hand over her keys, the roads will be a safer place for all. She drives like a maniac, but we are powerless to stop her. :-(

          Cheers. - Frank

P.S. The car is in the shop. The repairs should be completed by Wednesday. :-)

I used to be a courier and we had a lot of defensive driving training. (One of our drivers had an incident on his way to a safety meeting. He flipped off the other driver. "The other driver" turned out to be a compliance guy from the State who was coming to our meeting. Ex-driver on the spot.)

Anyway, you've covered most everything I can think of right now. It's been about a decade ago.

I do have just a couple of things to add.

Always be scanning all around you. Several times I've avoided getting hit by someone speeding and weaving through traffic. A couple of times I've caught such a driver out of the corner of my eye and delayed braking a second or so which allowed them to carry on, If I had braked, they would have clipped me.

Always try to give your self an out - a lane to change into.

Stay at least a count of three seconds back from the car ahead. At least five seconds back in winter or rain conditions. As much as you can in fog.

Try to give yourself 12 seconds of visibility ahead.

Most accidents happen at intersections. An intersection is also the space between parked cars
where a kid or dog might run out as they chase something, or someone backing out of their drive or parking spot.

Nah. The cops wouldn't let me near her. We didn't exchange a single word or piece of paper. The cops handled everything. Besides I was too busy flirting with the EMT. ':-) It's important to prioritize.
