Smashin Particles Together..

OK, so CERN have decided they want to create the same conditions as a second after the 'big bang' theory in order to see how particles gather mass and create planets (More or less right?).

In doing so they will inevitably create black holes, you know,.. the things that can EASILY swallow planets within 4 years?

Oh but don't worry, CERN is only creating MINI black holes.

Some scientists say they can control the thing that swallow planets whilst other TOP scientists say it's impossible to try and humanly control a black hole.

The only thing we have to worry about is who's side the goverment takes

What's your views on this?

My views are the same as they have been in all the other dozens of other threads about the Large Hadron Collider. It is not going to destroy the world. The concerns are two fold with the LHC, first a few physicists think that it might be possible to create a strangelet, which is a particle with very little data about, in fact we aren't even sure they exist. The second concern is that there is a possibility of creating black holes. However the black holes created would collapse in on themselves before they could do any real harm.

Of course, as I am typing this up the LHC is already running. Guess the world didn't end.

      Yeah - I've noticed it usually doesn't.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

Maybe it did - which brings us to string theories and spliting universes. If the universe splits at major choice points the old one might be destroyed and we'd never know it because our consciousness shifted to the new one. Time for bed.

even though it's up and running the particles are not going to collide into each other for about month. so we'll see if were still here in then.

Not a big fan of string theory to many variables plus 10 deminsions yeah oh and if you want to consider it with M-theory don't forget the 11th deminsion needed! plus there is about 5 major branches of string theory the string theorists can't even agree with each other.

As an Applied Physicist in a former life, I find the LHC
fascinating and look forward to it producing results in the
future. I.e., the results which should prove or disprove
all the esoteric string, dimensional and Higgs Boson theories.

Even more wonderful, is that a project of such awesome
scale and bleeding-edge science, technology and engineering
in a multinational context actually worked at all when they
fired it up. Brilliant ...kudos to all involved.

Yes I think it has been switched on, but NO particles have been collided yet.

I believe it's a big mistake. Others will see this as all the other times the earth was meant to end and not even blink.

Some believe the mini black holes will eat themselves up whilst others rushed straight to court in order to get the colliding adjourned because they believe out of the many black holes created, some will grow to uncontrollable sizes.

I heard if successful (smashing particles) it could make us one step nearer to using fusion power as opposed to fossil?

As you can obviously tell I don't know much about science and I think that's the problem. I just don't like the fact there are people out there who DO know and are steering well clear of that collider.

Yes, if it works it will solve a multitude of problems and, if not, only one - population control. I just can't get my head around a controlled amount of particles producing a black hole large enough to be a danger. Not enough potential mass. I wonder if many little black holes would eat each other, though - that would probably cause an explosion rather than sucking us up. Kinda like a miniature big bang. A miniature universe created could bring lots of money to any zoo that owned it.
