Hawaii raised its legal smoking age from 18 to 21

Is this a sound HEALTH POLICY?

Isn't the FDA's current policy of requiring gross pics enough?

There's actual statistical data backing up the gross pic approach

I'm interested in this issue because I know the dangers of smoking firsthand. I was a smoker for 20 years.

I've been smoke-free for 11 years now and would love nothing more than to see more people stop smoking or avoid tobacco altogether.

However, I'm not so sure about Hawaii's approach.

What do you folks think?

People should be allowed to smoke like chimneys, die early and make more room for the rest of us.

    You can't legislate away stupidity.

Well, there is that little thing called 'freedom' that most of us cling to. There's 400 million guns in the US and you're going on about tobacco?

I don't think it's a bad idea. Most kids don't pay attention to the age limit anyway - and most cities don't enforce it much.

I believe if you could keep someone from forming a smoking habit until age 21 - they would never be smokers.

By age 21 many people are on their own - living on budgets and not as intent on impressing others or going along with the crowd as they were at 18.

Please do not 'release balloons' for celebrations. The balloons and trailing ribbons entangle birds and kill wildlife and livestock that think the balloons are food.

        But guns don't kill people.

I think the law is to make some politician feel like he's helping our youth.

They'll still smoke. I started when I was 12. Definitely didn't care you had to be 18.

This proposed law implies that currently people wait patiently until they're 18 before starting to smoke. In my experience you start to smoke because you want to fit in with the culture in which you've grown up, e.g. what you see your parents or your peer group doing. I suspect that begins a lot earlier than adulthood.

For image-conscious teenagers, the fact that smoking is illegal (in a society where obtaining cigarettes is still pretty easy) probably just adds to the appeal.

The company is marketing a product. No one puts a gun (no pun intended) to anyone's head forcing them to buy it. People that buy it are hurting themselves through their own volition. Who, cares? Not, I.
