I'm not sure that's actually the case. Personally I change my signature often and I usually only put my own sites. The thing is, I have many sites and I'm not just going to list all of them in my signature. There is also the fact that many people here don't actually own sites in the IM niche so it might simply not be worth it for them. Compared to my other niche sites my IM sites are fairly new. Also I would not underestimate the fact that you do run the risk of someone duplicating your site and loosing your ranking to them.

From many of the sites I do check-out I think 'personal embarrassment' might be a good reason. Especially those from web designers. :-)

    Niche protection.

I learned this the hard way.

I was banking off a tight niche in 2001 to 2003.

Bragged about it by 'teaching' struggling marketers regarding niche examples.

It didn't take 6 months until my income was SHOT DOWN by one virulent competitor who ACKNOWLEDGED he got the idea from me.

We decided to 'split' the niche in two. Sadly, for me the part I took went through demand issues and I ended up on the losing end of the deal.

Lesson learned. Never share your niches. While most of the people out there won't know a KILLER NICHE even if it bit them in the face, it's the 1% who is simply waiting for their BIG BREAK to EXPLODE and unleash their marketing genius you have to watch out for. Sadly, they will shine at your expense.

    So, don't share your niches

Some don't have relevant websites to the IM niche so it's pointless to have it there, more markets out there other than IM.
