Now My Son Has Taken Up Chess

It is kind of bizarre seeing my son* watching videos on playing chess. I was sceptical since he's so young, I've always been crappy at the game myself.. He finally convinced me to buy him a chess set not long ago. So, what did he do? He made a chess board himself out of cardboard and non-toxic children's glue, and made the players with toilet paper rolls. It had the right squares, players and all but I bought him a chess set soon after that.

That's actually a good thing, since it hints at the possibility that the two of you might play at a more-or-less balanced level. Kids know when they win a grownup game fairly.

Once his level surpasses yours, I'm sure there are online versions where he can find players at a level similar to his own.

The cardboard version sounds adorable. We'd love to see a picture. I vaguely recall playing with a cardboard set when I was a kid, but it was pre-printed, with reminders of each piece's legal moves in a pictorial shorthand. (I also remember playing with a cardboard computer as a boy in the early 70's, but that's a story for another day.)

I find your calling these brave men "Pawns", despicable. They give their lives for King and Country. They should be honored, not reviled.

And I think forcing the white pieces to fight the black pieces, is what is setting this country back at least a century. Chess should be a matter of public relations, negotiating, seeing the board from the other side.

Can't these brave men be saved? Why must every chess match end in death? Why can't we all just get along?

And that is everything I know about the game of Chess.

Mark; Never ask me for a game of checkers.

            Satisfied?

By the way (this isn't a joke), my Dad used to play checkers with me, and he was quite good. I remember when I was about 8 years old, he kept beating me.

I think I complained about him getting kinged so quickly. It was something about the rules I didn't like.

He said, "Don't complain about the rules. Get better at the game". For some reason, I remembered that. It was good advice.

I once cracked the galaxians game, and made it give me a new ship every time I lost one. Somehow it wasn't as fun after that. YEP, it is better to try to beat the game than lower the criteria for winning.

Agreed! We need a plaque with that line that we can hang "upstairs" every time people complain about Google moving their cheese.

At that point, maybe I'll just enroll him in a chess club at the local recreation center.

Sometimes I play Chess Titans on the PC.

It's great because If I see I'm getting ready to lose I can start a new game (take that computer).
