    I couldn't help but notice that the ones from outside the US, (e.g., chess, backgammon, jigsae puzzles, Rubik's Cube), generally engage one's brain far more than those from within, (e.g., Barbies, Silly Putty, yo-yo's, Slinkies, Hula-hoops, teddy bears, and the like).

      That would just be coincidental, not deliberate LOL.. It is a fairly random and arbitrary selection of toys, especially the modern ones. The United States has produced a multitude of mentally engaging and challenging toys.
