Windows 10 Will Steal Your Bandwidth

Joe Mobley has a Windows 10 thread going here: http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...dows-10-a.html, but I thought this little tidbit deserved a separate thread.

Apparently:

Every time Microsoft releases a new version of Windows, its servers get slammed. To help alleviate this burden, Windows 10 can download updates from other users’ computers. The problem is, it can use up your bandwidth and data caps to do so.
This is mainly a concern for those with ISPs with data caps or bandwidth throttles. Here's how to turn it off:

I hope not, I'm already getting throttled by AT&T.

Precisely. I don't get throttled - as far as I can tell - but this is a potential issue for those who do.

That should be illegal setting up an OS defaults like a torrent.

It should certainly be an opt-in default, not an opt-out.

Having used it since Windows 95, I will concur that although a leap forward from Dos it left much to be desired because in those days, getting things to work on a computer was an occupation in itself. It was not until XP that their was any level of stability. Even that had it's problems.

My main observation was that the intent of the operating system Microsoft created was too grand for the capacity and speed of the computers it was running on. They were just not fast enough, hence the bottlenecking and freeze up's Plus it was catering to a huge range of third party of manufacturers and software companies who wanted to sell off the back of it. And, to a huge mass market.

Apple were on a much lower rung in this respect and kept their software and add-on peripherals very much in house or specially branded for a long time. I have no idea what a 1998 Apple would have been like to use.

Anyway, as each new version of Windows came out the problems and frustrations became less and less. The fact that the computers were becoming more powerful and faster also helped. Microsoft have become much more focused on the software itself and are much more accommodating tho third party addon software and peripheral makers than they ever were, about time. They finally pretty much abandoned trying to bring out hardware and are finally focusing on the core software.

I went straight from a failed (hardware) Windows Vista machine to Windows 8.1 and I can report it as being immensely stable and easy to use. (skipped 7)

The wife, a seasoned Mac User, at home and work (graphic artist) sometimes comes over to get me to do something on my PC that she can't on her Mac.

The startup time from powered off (including the putting in of the password) to get to the desktop (using a standard hard disk) and even pull up a website is just under a minute. (using an I5 processor and 8 gig machine)

I think if you went out and bought a reasonable Windows 10 machine (when they start shipping) you might be pleasantly surprised and have some fun with it.

Yeah, I know, teach a dog new tricks, but it's very intuitive these days, at least that's what I find with Windows 8.1, and of course, it should be easy to use.

Anyway, that's just an appraisal of a long term user. My headaches are minimal these days and my really useful connection leads and spares box is becoming increasingly redundant.

PS. An upgrade of Office was done at work over the weekend last. As I often do, I go to Outlook and pull up a new email, put in the recipients address, and type something in the subject line and typed "Attached" in the main body and then I hit send without remembering to attach a file. A box came up, you have forgot to attach your file it said. Oh I thought, so I have, hey wait, how did it know that. Getting a little smart these days.

Check this brief Windows 10 overview vid. (very short) It shows the speech recognition help app. Quite impressive.

How do computers work, it's so simple it's almost laughable. On off switches or generate a tiny electric current or not.

Cover your ceiling with light bulbs. each bulb has a light switch on the wall. Then by flipping the light switches on or off you can make patterns of characters or representations of pictures numbers or letters on the ceiling.

Take it further, wire a series of light bulbs to one switch so if flipped on will display a pattern that looks like the number 8 for example. That would loosely be called programming or creating an app. Then you could have another switch on the wall that says flip this to switch on to display the sum of 8 plus 8. The wiring is done so it would flip on a pattern so it would look like 16.

Look closely at your screen, made up of tiny dots, there are your light bulbs, multi colored ones that can be lit up in different ways. (requires more wiring)

Computer's are as dumb as crap. The light bulbs are replaced with tiny electric current pulses that are either on or off. ( Represented as binary, either 0 or 1, off or on) that lights up dots on a screen, giving you the illusion of intelligence. The thing is, it does it really fast and it has the ability to run multitudes of these little on off process simultaneously

It gives you the illusion that the computer is actually processing complex sums when it is not.

Well, I'm going to reveal a dark secret. When I volunteered for military duty at age 16, I was of course, a high school dropout. I was inducted a couple of months after my 17th birthday, which was the legal age for service. When I arrived at boot camp I was interviewed for assignment of an MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). Only the guys with brains got to pick and choose. The dum-dums were assigned an MOS that basically relegated them to one of the many jobs where you wound-up as cannon-fodder.

During the interview I'm told that I scored in the top 5% and basically could go into any specialty that I wanted that didn't require I go to Officers Candidate School (OCS), unless I wanted to do that by extending my commitment. No thanks. I told the interviewer that I was clueless and could he recommend something for me? He informed that there was a brand new MOS and the best part of all the training was at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD, which meant I could get home every weekend. "So, what is it," I ask. He says, it's using computers for fire control. The idiot that I am says to myself, "Wow, putting fires out with computers. How futuristic is THAT???" Sold!!!

So after I drag my 90 pound ass through basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC (Yes, I actually weighed 90 pounds) for 8 weeks, I shipped to the APG for advanced training. Imagine my surprise when I learned that fire control meant placing ordinance from big guns on enemy targets, meaning life spent in the field. Not really what I bargained for. I was there to learn how to repair the Army's newest technology, the FADAC (Field Artillery Digital Automatic Computer) fire control system. It handled 105mm 155mm cannons along with an 8" howitzer. It even would plot trajectories for the Honest John rockets. Yeah - a freakin' rocket. lol

So I learned to be a computer repairman, learning binary math and the one based on 'five' if memory serves. Of course I graduated first in the class and because of that was then asked if I wanted to get involved with something even newer than FADAC, which was TIFF (Tactical Imagery Interpretation Facility), basically learning how to read satellite imagery during warfare. I passed. I freakin' hated math and only did so well at binary math because my instructor told me I would never graduate the class because I had a poor attitude. Like I said - 1st in the class. lol

Had I pursued my computer skills upon leaving the military at the ripe old age of 20, who knows where live would have taken me. Instead I went home, bought a 1968 Triumph Bonneville motorcycle, let my hair grow half-way to my ass and became a tied-dyed hippie. A freakin' Commie as it were. lol

I may only have a GED, but I'm no dummy. I know all about computers and how all of the architecture works. I just don't have any interest in what takes place iside the box, only what the hell you can get out of it, as quickly, painlessly and creatively as possible.

I love engines, but I can't change a spark plug. I love every piece of mechanical equipment you can name - trains, trucks, buses, pumps, generators, tractors, planes, helicopters, boats, motorcycles - but I don't care how they work - only that they do - without any backtalk! :-)

I have never once popped the hood on my BMW. There are people that get paid to do that. I just want the car to go, in style, when I step on the gas. It does, so my needs have been met.

I've been that way my entire life and we are what we are. To try to be something we are not is the largest folly that man can be involved in. Inner peace comes from truly knowing who and what you are, accepting that fact and maximizing your true potential. That's the pathway to happiness.

                  Cheers. - Frank

P.S. You can find references to both FADAC and TIFF on the Internet.

Interesting story and I know what you mean about just getting on and using stuff and what it can do and not worrying about how it works, if it stops, that's what repairmen or replacements are for, just something that fascinated me. Glad you already know, it's the execution of how they got all this to work in a box of tricks that I dont mess with either to be honest, Although, I have upgraded and replaced/added stuff to computer towers before, it's just plug and play.

Interesting to think that the whole concept could (and possibly was) have been figured out centuries ago and demonstrated with a floor full of candles with ropes and pulleys to cover and uncover their light. No practical application at the time though, other than a parlor trick.

Always has and always will. That's why it will always be a deal breaker for me. My OS has to be an ally, not something I am forced to continually fight against.
My main observation was that the intent of the operating system Microsoft created was too grand for the capacity and speed of the computers it was running on. One word made it a deal breaker for me; drivers. Ridiculous. If you need a second word, let's go with viruses, and the fact that most of the AV software rarely fixed the problem and could actually make your computing experience, worse.
Apple were on a much lower rung in this respect and kept their software and add-on peripherals very much in house or specially branded for a long time. I have no idea what a 1998 Apple would have been like to use.
Nothing is perfect. Everything is a matter of degrees. To say that Apple never put out crap machines would not be honest. I give you the "Performas.' Still, I survived them and still made a living using them. The outcome of Apple producing such crap machines was that the next series was outstanding.
Anyway, as each new version of Windows came out the problems and frustrations became less and less. The fact that the computers were becoming more powerful and faster also helped. That all sounds good, but unfortunately even daily Windoze users are rarely proficient and learning all of the secrets of using it and keeping it humming. The general opinion, from all I read is that way too much time still need to be spent tinkering under the hood, as opposed to actually getting work accomplished. I simply can't envision living in that environment. I know that some folks enjoy that but I am not one of them. I don't want to ever have to give my OS a second's thought.
I went straight from a failed (hardware) Windows Vista machine to Windows 8.1 and I can report it as being immensely stable and easy to use. (skipped 7)
I'll take your word for it. I doubt I would have found the experience as satisfying.
The wife, a seasoned Mac User, at home and work (graphic artist) sometimes comes over to get me to do something on my PC that she can't on her Mac.
I have never found one single thing that I have ever needed to do in either my personal, creative or business requirements that I couldn't do on my Mac. I bought a nice Dell high-end desktop years ago because someone convinced me that I could not run my entire business on a Mac. They were totally wrong and that machine sat for 2 years without ever needing to be booted-up. lol
The startup time from powered off (including the putting in of the password) to get to the desktop (using a standard hard disk) and even pull up a website is just under a minute. (using an I5 processor and 8 gig machine)
I'm booting up in 7 seconds, opening Photoshop in 4 to 5 seconds and can't find an application that takes longer than 10 seconds to open
I think if you went out and bought a reasonable Windows 10 machine (when they start shipping) you might be pleasantly surprised and have some fun with it.
No use for it, no interest in it - that's just my reality. It would be a waste of money. I already have 2 very high-end Mac workstations and haven't turned the second on on in 4 months. I just enjoying knowing it's there if I ever need it. It's actually configured as a dedicated audio/video broadcast set-up, so I'll be using it in the fall when my radio station comes off of hiatus and I start to do live webinars for my last major client.
Yeah, I know, teach a dog new tricks, but it's very intuitive these days, at least that's what I find with Windows 8.1, and of course, it should be easy to use.
I'll take your word on that, honestly.
Anyway, that's just an appraisal of a long term user. My headaches are minimal these days and my really useful connection leads and spares box is becoming increasingly redundant.
My headaches are totally non-existent. I can't enjoy computing any other way. I have never enjoyed arm-wresting with my box. There is a part of me that is very lazy. I have no problem admitting that. Additionally, I am not a geek and have no understanding, technically, of how computers work and why. I just want it to do what I want, whenever I want, for as long as I want void of protestation. I revel in that.
Old age generally has that effect on anything. :-)
Check this brief Windows 10 overview vid. (very short) It shows the speech recognition help app. Quite impressive.
I will do that over the weekend. Not sure what you are referring to, but the Mac has had speech recognition and transcription for years. I can operate the machine, completely, without ever touching the keyboard through it disability assist features.

I spoke this entire message without needing to type anything. No additional applications required outside of the standard OSX feature set. :-)

            Cheers. - Frank

I would imagine that this would make it much easier to compromise the distribution, since there will be far more weak links (unprotected consumer machines) in the chain. Once this happens, it seems like it'll be almost impossible to completely kill the problem. i.e., The first thing to get hacked will be Windows' own ability to confirm that an update is genuine. At that point, no virus protection software will be able to protect anyone, because the compromised software will look, feel, act, and respond as Windows, and the operating system will of course agree that the software is 100% genuine Microsoft Windows.

Everything in today modern world is not certain. Maybe some still from us, maybe we are being watched. Who can know, all those things are secrets.

once again, I think my son was right when he said that Apple products are way more user-friendly because once again with Windows 10, one has to research, be tech-savvy, and a little bit eccentric to use it properly. Guilty. Still I'm in no hurry to upgrade my Windows 7 machines. Maybe next year.

It's infinitely better than it was and you can really just get on and use it for the large part these days. Apple only have about 5 percent of the market share (and that allows them to control what comes out for it much better) in operating systems and still far more software and peripherals were written or made for Windows which still dominates. But much harder to control the quality or compatibility.

And Apple users need to be rich!

Or go buy an external hard disk to make up the shortfall?

I did muck around with it today, on someone else's computer.

Pretty impressive, but navigation was a bit tricky!

Probably because that's bandwidth usage they decided to use. This also assumes that's who is complaining. I'm complaining about bandwidth leak and I couldn't even tell you how to use a torrent. I just want my Netflix to be in HD and not get throttled because Microsoft so graciously siphoned off some off my bandwidth for some guy in Singapore.

I didn't think you were, Mike, but can see how my response came across that way. I was trying to highlight that the issue concerns us regular folk, as well. Sometimes I mistake lack of thought completion for brevity.

In my first sentence, I was trying to say that even those folks don't want their bandwidth eaten up for purposes they haven't initiated.

Hmmm, probably means that W10 will have lousy sales in AU, since there are a lot of pirates here, (but what do you expect from a bunch of ex, convicts)?
