MY experience with Windows 10

Keep in mind that I have, so far, only been using it for about 10 minutes, and I haven't even logged out, rebooted, and logged in yet!

INSTALLATION? DO IT IN PLACE NOW was painless for me, but apparently can be risky.
CHARMS? They apparently got rid of that IDIOTIC monstrosity!
Overall appearance of desktop, Verses 7 to 8.1? NEARLY IDENTICAL!
DEFAULT SCREEN? The OLD pre 8 one!
Start functionality? A nice mix of functionalities that MOST should like, and I am OK with.
The features M/S keeps moving? They moved AGAIN, but I found most, that I have looked for so far, in maybe a minute of searching. The NETWORK option is shown with an intuitive and standard icon on the lower bar.

COMPATIBILITY? Well, I tried a high end app that uses eclipse over java, and it seemed to run. I ALSO went onto a finicky site using RSAs ASG, and IT worked.

SO FAR, I like it. I only hope it is REALLY free, I have heard rumors. If it isn't free, at this point, M/S could likely end up on the wrong end of the biggest suit in history, so I think the rumors are likely wrong.

Oracle virtual box started windows server SLOWLY, but then claimed it could NOW bypass the capture logic. THAT worked fine, but the bridged DELL adapter failed. several other options are available, but I don't have the time to test right now.

Thanks for early feedback. Now cut to the chase and try out Cortana (or whatever it;s called) the speech recognition app. Does it understand what you are saying right out of the box?

Free for a year to download and from then on free until your computer dies. Thats what I heard.

Then you get a new computer with 10 on it.

PS How did you manage to get your hands on it?

I TOLD it to install cortana, but it didn't acknowledge the request, other than to provide a non responsive "manage" button. Apparently cortana, for now, is an OPTION. I accessed it by clicking on a popup that appeared when it was "installing a new option". There were a LOT of options, mostly for language options, like keyboard handling for danish, german, chinese, kannada(sp? which is a language in india), cortana, etc....

When I get it to work, I will let you know. It will be like a week before I really try it again. HEY, my life is crazy, what can I say? I need to keep compatibility. I have actually been swapping between two computers this week, and decided to upgrade the newest one that is a desktop I keep at home. BTW I bought it about 4 months ago.

Well, that is how it generally HAS worked, from the beginning, for other operating systems.

PS How did you manage to get your hands on it?
Well, over the past few days, I have thought about it, and DID find a download site for an app, and even created a sandisk card for the upgrade, but I was too scared to use it. My laptop has PROMISED that IT would offer it to me "soon", but it HASN'T. Well, I was on the system I spoke about earlier, and IT said I could install windows 10 whenever I wanted. I figured WHAT THE HECK, ******SURE******! And I installed it!

BTW I spoke with a dealer employee earlier, and he said it would be released to STORES on 7/29, and to the public on 7/30. ALSO, there are THREE ways to install it:

        1. IN PLACE on the system as a direct install.(how I installed it here)
        2. From a "USB FLASH DRIVE". Apparently you can NOT use just any USB drive, as it did NOT work with mine! ALSO, it does NOT have to be USB, as I did it straight to a card. Apparently, it wipes out whatever was on the drive.(how I plan to do it with my laptop)
        3. From an ISO image.

They say it takes 6GB,for the install image. My flash disk is 5.56GB used.

I just put in the email request to get informed when ready, could be a day or so or a week it said. I think I will take it from there.

The difference with this one apparently is that once you have for free, they may never release a new one, just keep updating this one. So only if you went beyond the year free download period, then you would have to buy it. But, get for free, that's it until your computer dies. New computer, Windows 10 again. No more buying new versions ever.

It WOULD be interesting to see the detailed P&L from MS. They have their hands in SO much now. Just EMAIL and remote disk usage, for example, could net them many millions even though so much is free.

OH, and WINDOWS 10, as I understand their promise, could isolate all the development of drivers to them. This will help them maintain their position as like one of the 4 major players for general drivers. They could also all but eradicate the OEM spread on M/S software.

I have the option in place now (was installed within a Windows update) but I am hesitant to install it. I NEED my Apache/MySQL/PHP install to keep working. I cannot afford to be down, even for part of a day. That's not to mention all of the Adobe apps I use, etc.

I just don't know that I want to switch until I have to.

Like I said, I am scared TOO! I just had a system lying around that was capable and could blow up without affecting me much. My laptop is still 8.1(YUCK). Apachemysql/php are PROBABLY OK, though I haven't tested them. With adobe, WHO KNOWS. I have some software that is incompatible with a LOT of stuff. The windows version is not supported on ANY real version of windows, but on a kind of hybrid relic called windows server. And even THEN only on 2 or 3 versions. It isn't often considered in the retail market, priced outside the consumer market, etc... hence my disdain. I want to try THAT, but it will take a while. For a SHORT period they acknowledged windows 7 support, and several major versions ago it DID work on windows.

        Do I dare go ahead?

I installed on two of my home pcs yesterday, and have been working with it today.

I hated 8.1 in the office and never upgraded my home computers from 7.

So far, with 10, I have no regrets.

One thing I found that I'm very happy about is a Web Clip feature in their new browser, Microsoft Edge (I guess that's curtains for IE. Quite a run it had.)

You click the clip button, draw a box around whatever it is on the web page you want to clip, and it's copied. Then paste it into your document or email.

I've been using Evernote to do this for over a year. Doing it directly in the new browser saves me about 5 steps and about a minute or so. Considering how often I email people screenshots, this is a big deal.

There seems to be lots of new features that might be useful, so far no changes that I think are just stupid (which was definitely not the case with 8), and zero compatibility issues as of yet (I've got a high-ish-end video card, three monitors and a couple of graphics apps I was concerned about. No issues yet.)

I say go for it, Mark.

Well I did it, truly amazing. For the most part the Cortana App is spot on. Try asking it if it loves you.

What does it say? My favorite is asking Rsts/e to make love(in rsts /e lingo, that means start a document called love). Instead of doing what it is told, it asks "NOT WAR?"!
