EPA: Pollution from mine spill much worse than feared

"Yes, those numbers are high and they seem scary," said Deborah McKean, chief of the Region 8 Toxicology and Human Health and Risk Assessment. "But it's not just a matter of toxicity of the chemicals, it's a matter of exposure."
She said the period of time those concentrations remain in one area is short.
And the EPA has the AUDACITY to claim that this isn't toxic. As for the "limited exposure"? That is BULL!
They ADMIT that the water is high in ZINC, COPPER, and ****CADMIUM****! OK! ZINC, in high amounts can be BAD! COPPER in high amounts can be ALSO, and ironically copper and zinc have inverse effects! EITHER can cause a deficiency in the other. And CADMIUM? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadmium_poisoning

Cadmium is an extremely toxic metal commonly found in industrial workplaces. Due to its low permissible exposure limit, overexposures may occur even in situations where trace quantities of cadmium are found.
OH YEAH, and cadmium can KILL!

As for the "limited exposure"? Well, the discoloring of the water clearly shows that, based on uses before say the 1700s, this is clearly NOT TRUE! And TODAY? TODAY? Well, we have wells, springs, self sustained wells, water heaters, dams, irrigation, etc... So a flow of a few minutes can last MONTHS or YEARS!

THANK YOU EPA! WHO NEEDS CLEAR/CLEAN WATER!

You can look at the pictures and SEE how bad it is. I expect it's killed everything living in the water and anything that manages to survive will be full of toxins.

Considering the burdens the EPA has put on farmers and ranchers - this is inexcusable and heads should roll. They won't, of course, but they should.

Well, all I can add here is a little rage since Steve and Kay pretty much said it all.

It is nice, though, that environmental groups have started suing the EPA for crap like this. They're just as corrupt as every other gov/corporate run entity anymore.

The EPA is way far from perfect but I'll stop short of calling for its abolishment - because it can be fixed and and is often a great tool for management of our national environment.

But this one's a doozie for the ages.
