Don't blame AMERICANS for those monstrosities. Someone was probably just trying to take advantage. BTW I flew on a SWEDISH airline to Denmark, and one thing they taled about was a popular food in Denmark. Oh SURE, in danish it is polsa(sp?), but the Danish slang name that everyone understands? HOTDOG! I won't accuse the Danes of defiling it even though THEY like remoulade, and I DON'T!

The only one that looked like it might taste good is the $169 Tokyo Dog.

So we've redefined "defile" to mean "make more delicious"?

Let me guess, you like ketchup on your hotdog and it's really the sugar in the ketchup that's got you hooked?

I actually rarely eat hot dogs, probably not even once a year. Much more of a brat man. Those I simmer in beer, butter, and onions, and finish on the grill.

And I'll have you know, sir, that I prefer stone ground mustard to ketchup. In fact, I make it myself. Ketchup is reserved for jo-jo duty.

IMHO, they should all be inducted into the Hot Dog Hall Of Shame.

I'll stick with mustard alone, and/or with a bit of sauerkraut or mustard and a bit of relish or a good chilly dog. I tried this Chicago hot dog at O'hare airport but did not like it one bit.

This one actually looks delicious to me. My favorite is with chili and lots of it, and onions and cheese, but I'm not really picky. The ones in the article ... like Kentucky Fried Chicken surrounding a hot dog or hot dogs on pizza ... that just looks gross to me, but I'm not a hot dog purist by any means.

Yea Suzanne, when I think about it, I also don't mind a few onions along with chilli and mustard on my dogs. Those pics were gross but you're right, the Japanese dog didn't look all that bad.

BTW, I long ago, stopped using the bright yellow mustard on anything and now use Goldens' brown mustard or even Grey Poupon. I know you remember when Grey Poupon was introduced to the market with the...

I live Grey Poupon. I never use just plain old bright yellow mustard either. Either brown or Dijon, with Dijon being my favorite.

I agree wholeheartedly. You substituted a proper English or German type sausage (like a Brat) for some sloppy, tasteless pink, water laced piece of processed yuk and expect it to taste good. Sure, dress it up all you like but keep the foundation good.

Seek out a German Bratwurst sausage and make a hot dog using it. Only then you will understand.

In our area we have a food franchise called "James Coney Island" Mmmmm I thought. The famous Coney Island hotdog to be sampled at last.

Wow, what a horrible synthetic tasting piece of crap. I really cant believe this outfit is still in business. (just water warmed up Franks)

In addition to growing up eating Offals (a different thread) I also had the pleasure of eating many German dishes (thanks to my fathers German heritage) including many, many, different types of Wursts. The Hot Dog or wiener was actually the creation of a Polish immigrant and today is really nothing like the original. So even though the hot dog is technically a wurst, comparing it to other wurst's is just a matter of taste. Just like homemade wursts are better then store bought ones (those things they sell in supermarkets as wursts are terrible) so goes the hot dog.

Yup. For some reason, I remember loving a good hot dog. So, about once a year, I'll decide to get a couple (usually at a gas station). After one bite, I remember why it's only once a year. The mustard and relish are there just to kill the taste.

But a bratwurst sausage hotdog? The best.

There are plenty of quality hotdogs on the market. Americans like them. The English and Germans can have their tubes of fat (sausages). lol. After seeing the thread on what they like for an English breakfast, I wonder if they have a beverage that is 90% pure fat that they drink .... and love. lol.

So don't be offended Lanfear. Americans eat what they eat and you guys do the same and everyone will be happy
