Listening to 'extreme' music makes you calmer, not angrier, according to study

The link to the study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience is below:

Extreme metal music and anger processing

    Conclusion

This study found that extreme music fans listen to music when angry to match their anger, and to feel more active and inspired. They also listen to music to regulate sadness and to enhance positive emotions. The results refute the notion that extreme music causes anger but further research is required to replicate these findings in naturalistic social contexts, and to investigate the potential contributions of individual listener variables on this relationship between extreme music listening and anger processing.
Below is a wide angle snap of a recent metal show I attended at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in Tinley Park where I am guessing roughly 23,000+ were there to see the Incubus & the Deftones. I was testing my little Nikon pocket cam at this one from my seat...

...and here is a snap using a bit of telephoto. For those who do not know...the band pictured is Incubus. Incubus plays mainly hard rock, alternative, alternative metal and funk metal. While they do a fair job and are quite popular, they are not nearly as heavy as many of the bands that I enjoy.

You should have asked that question 35 years ago when it was current and fresh. Now it's just another genre of music that has had it's day but still of course liked by some, but a minority interest

I got into it in my teens and it was huge at the time. It was the sort of stuff I would go to gigs to watch and bop about to (freak out to!) and often played it at home and it was always played just before I went out for a booze up or a party.

Why, because it was energetic and got me fired up and it reflected the energy I had in my teens.

The sort of music that does that has been changed many times by teenagers since, be it ska, house, electronic pop or whatever is popular and that may include Taylor Swift (perish the thought) as long as it's energetic.

Heavy Metal is Just a genre of music that has long been superseded by other stuff. The question is no longer relevant.

Which Music Genres Have the Loyalest Fans?

Alternative Metal and Nu Metal are the most popular Metal on Spotify...In-fact one of my favorites Korn is one of the most listened to acts in both of those subs...ahead of hard rock, metal, speed metal etc..

The Top 25 Metal Sub-Genres According To Spotify

We already know heavy metal fans are the most loyal of any of the big genres of music. And it’s getting more popular; in a typical week, metal’s share of overall Spotify listening increased 13 percent from 2014 to 2015.

Plus, if you stack all the other genres bars on top of each other to make a big long one it shows HM is just a small part of the diverse array of music people like and listen to.

Spotify knows it's own numbers. We are not just talking heavy metal when we talk metal these days.... We are talking alternative, alternative metal, nu metal, post grunge etc etc. It's not so much about heavy metal, hair metal, speed metal and death metal anymore!

I guess you missed this above...

I have been attending huge metal shows for a very long time --> and I am seeing more sold out metal shows and packed auditoriums and arenas than I have seen in a couple of decades. In-fact one of the the few acts to sell out the arena here in CR recently was Slipknot...10,000 peeps at a Slipknot show in CR and I expect when I see them at Tinley Park it will be 20K plus.

Papa Roach, Incubus, Five Finger Death Punch, Volbeat, Korn, Slipknot etc. etc. etc. are a few of the faces of metal these days...this ain't the hair metal of yesteryear.

I hope we can agree to disagree.

The real question isn't whether heavy metal has a positive effect, but whether music has a positive effect on society. The answer to that is absolutely yes.

Music has been a big part of every culture/society since we first started gathering together in caves and banging sticks against a rock.

In fact I'd put forward the premise that it's the various art forms (paintings, sculpture, music, literature, etc.) that actually define a culture/society.

I won't argue with you much on those points... I love the fact that some of the good acts can be seen live in many parts of the world. I know you enjoyed the 2Cellos live show in Australia and I enjoyed them here in the U.S... And yeah, they did cover some seriously heavy stuff...albeit on cellos! I will be sure to see them again when they are in driving range for me...

      Hear! Hear!

A few of the great shows my wife and I have attended since Feb. 8 this year are:

Bush & Theory of a Deadman (Bush is always great, and the acoustically awesome venue was sold out - a couple thousand peeps)

Godsmack, Papa Roach & In This Moment - (Godsmack and In This Moment killed it and the crowd always loves Papa Roach - probably 7K attended. Sully was awesome with the crowd at this one.)

      Slipknot & Hatebreed - (Off-the-hook and over-the-top show, 10K witnessed in a stuffed arena)

Incubus & Deftones - (killer show at one of the top 10 venues in the U.S....20K+ were there and everyone loved the show.)

Britt Floyd - (One of the 2 great Pink Floyd tribute groups in the world - a couple thousand packed an acoustical dream venue...not really metal, but played for almost 3 hours - a great performance). In-fact I may pay to see them again a little later this month.

Small Venue - big national act (my favorite so far this year)

POD and Hoobastank - (Hoobastank was good and POD blew the friggn' roof off of a packed house)

Small Venue - national act (my favorite smaller venue, smaller national metal act of the year)

Super Bob - (Are you kidding me? These guys from D.C. killed it on a Sunday night)

My wife and I have tickets to these upcoming monster metal shows over the next 3 months.

Slipknot, Lamb of God, Bullet for My Valentine & Motionless in White (I expect 20K+ will attend)

Stone Temple Pilots, Papa Roach, Five Finger Death Punch, Godsmack, In This Moment, Pop Evil and many others (I am expecting between 20 to 30,000 for this one)

      Korn & Suicide Silence - I expect a full house @ 4500 peeps.

Five Finger Death Punch, Papa Roach & In This Moment - This will be a full arena at around 9 or 10K.

Shinedown, Sevendust & Breaking Benjamin - I figure this will sellout between 9 and 10K.

Yeah, I will be rocking the funk out for the rest of this year, and for sure I am a regular at the big metal shows --> I can tell you metal is alive and well. Not only do I attend the big shows, but I regularly attend the smaller national, regional and local acts here in town at 3 different venues that all throw down the metal.

      Rock on....

Yeah...metal is alive and well ---> and I am not talking just on the rock charts or the metal charts. I am talking about the main Billboard 200 chart. Sure metal has hundreds or thousands of music genres and/or sub-genres to compete with for fans these days, but we metal fans know plenty of great metal acts exist, and lucky for us, most of those acts love to tour.

Below is that list of the metal bands that my wife and I have already seen this year, and the metal bands that we have tickets to see live later this year. Specifically, they are bands I listed above. I have listed them with the latest album that they have dropped, or will drop, and the peak Billboard 200 chart position of that album. The Billboard 200 is list of the top selling albums (including downloads) across all genres in a given week in the U.S.

Here goes...check the #1's, #2's, #3's etc. In-fact almost all of the bands charted a top 20 or better with the last album they dropped...and that's across all music genres. Also notice...almost all have dropped recent or fairly recent albums.

    Slipknot (2014) .5: The Grey Chapter (Charted #1 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Breaking Benjamin (2015) - Dark Before Dawn (Charted #1 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Five Finger Death Punch - Got Your Six - (Not released yet - 2013 release charted #2 Billboard Top 200)

Stone Temple Pilots (2010) Stone Temple Pilots (Charted #2 Billboard To 200)

Incubus (2015) Trust Fall (Side A)(EP) (Last full album release charted #2 U.S. Billboard Top 200 and this EP hit #6)

    Godsmack (2014) 1000hp (Charted #3 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Lamb of God (2015) VII: Sturm und Drang (Charted #3 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Shinedown (2015) Threat To Survival (Not released yet, 2013 album charted #4 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

    Theory of a Deadman (2014) Savages (Charted #8 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

    Korn - (2013) Paradigm Shift (Charted #8 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Motionless In White (2015) Reincarnate (Charted #9 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Bullet For My Valentine (2015) Venom (Not released yet - 2013 album charted #11 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Deftones (2012) Koi No Yokan (Charted #11 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

    Papa Roach - (2015) Fear (Charted #15 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

In This Moment (2014) Blood (Charted #15 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Suicide Silence (2014) You Can't Stop Me (Charted #16 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

    P.O.D. - (2015) The Awakening (Not released yet - 2012 release charted #17 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Sevendust (2015) Kill the Flaw (Not released yet - 2013 album charted #18 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Hatebreed (2013) The Divinity of Purpose (Charted #20 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Bush (2014) Man On The Run (Charted #33 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Pop Evil (2015) Up (Not released yet - 2013 release charted #39 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Hoobastank (2012) Fight or Flight (Charted #66 U.S. Billboard Top 200)

Super Bob (2015) Killer (Did Not Chart That I Know Of)

Relevant? Yes. Had it's day? Hell no. Loved by many? Yes? Popping decent numbers on the charts? Yes.

As we can see by the Billboard 200 numbers plenty of peeps love the metal! I also know this from seeing how many peeps are attending the shows, and how many peeps are gobbling up the merch at the shows! And yes, many of us that enjoy great metal understand how (and why) metal was ranked the most loyal genre on Spotify. You can't fake good metal with a computer, a mixer, a keyboard, a synth, and some loops --> and that's a fact. Because of that fact you won't find a million "artists" blasting out track after track after track.

Again, these are just the big metal bands that my wife and I have seen play (or will see play) this year, all played or are playing within a few hours drive or less from my house. Metal has evolved and I for one am loving it!

    Rock out, peeps.
