Sneaky, sneaky. An undefeated South Snohomish (WA) softball team figured out they could lose to a North Carolina team and still advance in the Softball World Series. The loss would also mean they bumped a very tough Iowa team out of the tourney.

It didn't take long for the Iowa coaches to see what they were doing and busted them.

"PORTLAND, Ore. — A South Snohomish softball team in the thick of a major league-sized scandal has been eliminated from the Little League Softball World Series after losing a mandated one-game playoff.

South Snohomish lost a rematch Tuesday against Central Iowa, 3-2, ESPN reports. The single-game playoff followed regular pool play — where South Snohomish went undefeated — and was required after Central Iowa levied accusations of game-throwing against the local team.

On Monday, the previously unbeaten team of girls from South Snohomish lost 8-0 in pool play to a team from North Carolina at the world series tournament in Portland. In complicated play rules, the loss in the final game of pool play bumped the tough Central Iowa squad from the tournament, while still allowing Snohomish to move on.

But early into South Snohomish’s loss Monday, officials from other teams suspected something was up."

Would you throw a game if it meant you advanced AND had a better playoff picture for your team?

Well, the ultimate goal of a team is to win the championship they are competing for - right?

They ought to get rid of those interesting rules that makes this type of situation possible.

I'd have just forfeited the game. Same end result, perfectly legal, bad publicity on the idiots who wrote the game play rules instead of on the team.

And IMHO, if, as a result of their maneuver, they would have captured the championship, it would have been a "Championship Without Honor" - because they were ducking another team.
