New member, introducing myself

Hi, my name is Adrian, I'm new to the forums here. I found Warrior Forum by accident while doing some research about the trade website Alibaba. This forum seems like a great place to find a wealth of knowledge about the art of sales and online business.

Some quick information about myself. Recently turned 25, background in sales, just accepted an offer with Bell Canada as a residential services specialist (sales), and worked with Future Shop prior to that in electronics sales (basically the Canadian division of Best Buy) before they imploded in spectacular fashion. I spent the ages of 20-24 in college studying Art & Design and Game Development, earning a certificate in the former and "advanced diploma" in the latter. While I am a creative person, I've come to the realization that those career paths probably aren't right for me due to the lifestyle required.

I'm here with the goal of meeting valuable influences, and gaining the necessary knowledge to excel at some form of entrepreneurship. I might even seek a mentor. Right now I intend to save some money to invest into the business pipeline of buying cheap from a factory vendor, and selling via some form of online medium. Most likely in the electronics category, as that is where my product knowledge is strongest. I understand that finding a niche product gives a lucrative advantage.

Anyways, just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. The older I get the more entrepreneurial I feel, and I feel the time to take action is now.

I read your story "The Zone" posted on Sep 10th. So you are a fan of Strugatsky brothers? Cool!
I can't recall the Honeycomb artifact from that book, though. But then again I read the Roadside Picnic about 5 years ago and of course in original language. Must be errors in translation. I never tried to memorize that book, it was before I discovered the infinite memory artifact.

You've also got a nice header picture. Why don't you want to delve into game development?

I have a website for multi player games. Right now working on Texas hold'em game logic from the scratch. I can't drop a link, because the yellow rat said "Sorry you cannot do self promotion within the Body of your Post." At least he didn't have a problem with your link, thank Darwin! Or god.

Welcome to the forum Adrian. It's nice to see a new member say hi in such a well-written and polite fashion. That will get you far in this industry.

One quick tip though- be careful buying wholesale and selling online. Almost all the tech companies these days have non-compete clauses in their contracts and I don't want to see you get fired over not realizing that. The same goes for making purchases from company vendors...be sure to read the by-laws to ensure that you're safe going that route.

I'm going to ask my manager that to clarify, but I am under the assumption that for Bell, that restriction would only apply if I were selling the same products that they do (cellphones, tablets, etc)...

Thanks for the welcome everyone. So I've been working at the Bell store for almost a month now, selling residential services (Internet, TV, Home Phone). I have a coworker who is a member of this MLM organization BWW LLC.. He wants to meet with me on Tuesday to discuss the opportunity. I have a fairly good idea about how these marketing entities function.

Basically all I've been doing for the past couple weeks is working, and working out at the gym. Things are moving very slow right now as I try to save money for an initial investment. I'm still only in training with Bell, so profits won't pick up for a little while longer while I learn on the job. Just thought I'd pop by and give an update.

If doing research on Alibaba, I suggest you do some searches on this forum.

Here are some relevant threads. The first on is very long. How can you possibly make any money buying from Alibaba.com?

Thanks for the links Importexport. I read the long thread " How can you possibly make any money buying from Alibaba.com?". You had many posts on there, I took away from it that Alibaba has large potential for risk, and that the best way to conduct business in a safe and reliable manner is to locate genuine factory vendors. Makes sense.

I am still in the early research phase of learning how to properly import and sell online with proper margins, advertisement etc. I am nearing the end of saving for my initial investment however, and will have a couple grand set aside for that. Patience and one step at a time.

It is good to see someone moving cautiously. Too many people rush in without doing their research.

I wish you well, and if you have questions on the subjects of product sourcing or importing, may I suggest that you post them on my thread Ask Me Anything About Product Sourcing And Importing For Profit. ― Veteran Importer Here.

    1 year update (I'm back)

So last year I decided to temporarily sideline my plans for creating an online business, because I opted instead to kill my tuition loan over the course of the past 12 months (who wants to pay interest on a loan?). Now that I have that pesky $10'000 debt out of the way, I have since saved up another $9000 to invest (money that is actually mine, for once).

I have read Walter Hay's Proven China Sourcing guide, and realized that the amount I have saved should be enough to "get started". The obstacle I am dealing with now, is deciding what products to source and sell. Finding that illusive "niche". So product/market research will be my biggest focus for now.

Anyways, just wanted make a statement signaling my motioning back into the groove of things. Did I miss anything exciting in the meantime?

It's great to see that you are taking such a sensible approach to your venture. Too many people expect instant results.

I think your research and also the effort in establishing a financial resource before trying to set up a business indicate that you are already headed in the right direction.

Feel free to contact me if you need more help.
