WordPress Mess...Need Some Opinions

This all stems from Michel Fortin's blog post about comment spam, the kind
that looks harmless but is really just useless crap.

Because of spam problems and because my blog gets a decent amount of
traffic, I have disabled comments. I just couldn't be bothered with the
nonsense. Akismet took care of the obvious stuff but missed a lot of the
not so obvious.

But because I realize that "useful" comments are important to a blog's
popularity, I am now confronted with a tough decision and I honestly don't
know what to do.

For one thing, with the recent WordPress upgrade (2.8.3) my Akismet
plugin, for some reason, has been deactivated. I don't know why and I'm
hesitant to reactivate it. It doesn't say a new version is available and
yet it's inactive, so this has me quite puzzled.

So, here are my questions.

First of all, is there a better spam plugin than Akismet that works with
2.8.3 that won't give me any problems? If so, I'll consider using it.

But here is the bigger question.

If I open up my blog to comments, I know I'm going to get hammered with
them, especially with some of the controversial stuff I write about.

Is there a way to moderate these quickly or am I going to ultimately be
a slave to my PC again?

If there is an easy way to do this, I will.

If not, I am thus stuck with my ultimate dilemma of deciding whether or
not it's worth opening up my blog to comments and the problems that
I know it's going to cause.

So I guess what I'm asking is this.

If you were in my place, already running a fairly successful business, and
don't really need the comments, what would you do?

Would you leave things as they are or would you activate comments?

I'm making a poll and will go with the majority on this because quite
honestly, I can't decide.

Thanks for your help.

I think that perhaps you should enable the comments to a certain degree especially because a key element in successful business practice is giving your consumers a voice. Letting your customers know that you do listen to them may prove to be an advantage.

I agree you should enable comments -

I can't remember the exact details but do remember an announcement several months ago about Akismet tanking. However at the same time there is a replacement right there in the PlugIns - just go and install it easily from the option in WordPress to see all available PlugIns.

It is relatively easy to moderate comments 'globally' (check all) so if you are spammed heavily you check all and then just eyeball and uncheck the real comments, or vice versa.

    Hi Steven,

These might help. I use some of them on my blog as well (besides Akismet)

    Challenge:
    ?????? ?????? WordPress Plugin: Challenge

This throws commenters a question you set like "what color is the sky"? You can change it as often as you want to prevent the automated spam junk. I did have a plugin installed called "Did You Pass Math?" which would give them a random simple math question but sometimes the correct answer would be marked "wrong" by the script- so I gave it up

go ahead and activate Akismet. There is nothing wrong with it. WordPress automatically deactivated it when you upgraded.

Akismet is the best solution to combat spam but here's what else you can do..for each post if you scroll down the post page you will see an area where you can close comments after a specified period of time..you decide, 30 days, 60, 90...whatever suits you best.

moderation short cuts...there is a setting under "discussion" where you can setup "Before a comment appears"..check off: "Comment author must have a previously approved comment"

also check off " Automatically close comments on articles older than ?? days" <-- adjust this to suit and it can be overwritten on a per post basis

      hope I've helped

but thats a good thing. controversial means traffic. you want to piss people off, or atleast get them talking.

start some conversation that you KNOW is going to cause a row and then drop a link on a big board.

    Hi Steven,

I think you should open comments.

I use the Bad Behaviour plugin, in addition to Akismet, and it works great for me.

Also, if you go to the Settings>Discussion screen you can set a default period of time after which comments will automatically be closed.

You're getting good traffic so you could set this to a low number - 7 or 14 days, for example.

If you check the posts on which you're receiving most of your spam comments you may find that they're the older posts - they are on my blog.

So closing comments automatically after a short period of time may help.

Bad Behaviour is very good at catching the auto spam comments and I do suggest you re-activate Akismet.

It wasn't deactivated on my blog so there may just have been some glitch there that prevented it from being reactivated after your upgrade to 2.8.3.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

I voted 'no', simply based on your description. 1) You already have a successful business that isn't dependent on comments for survival/success, and 2) you've outlined how time-intensive the process has become for you.

Really, though, before voting no, I should have asked you (not meaning to pry - just for your own personal analysis process): are you making more money with the comments turned on? If so, is it enough to cover the opportunity cost for you doing the spam patrol (ie how much do you normally make per hour and will you see that much or more income from allowing comments)?

If not, is it at least enough to cover the cost of outsourcing this activity?

If both those answers are no, then it's definitely not worth it.

    HTH! Cindy
