online access - question

I do all my online activities from home, and never really needed online access whilst being on holiday etc.

However, this time I'd like to take my laptop with me, but am not sure how I change settings to access the internet, if I'm "wired up" to another uk-based landline (broadband). I'm guessing there'll be an access facility at the hotel.

My laptop is 5 1/2 year old Presario 2100 (pre-wireless!!!) and I still use a cable from my modem into my port on the computer.

If you can help, please sak if there's anything else you'd need to know in order to advise

Thanks in advance

Ian, most hotels that offer internet access use Wifi rather than a landline. In which case, you will need a PC Card or USB Wifi adaptor.

There are some that still offer you a landline connection in your room. In those instances, I just plugged the cable into my laptop without any problems. This is probably what you want.

Most hotels will have an business centre where you can rent a computer with internet connection. Depending on the hotel, they may allow you to take the cable away from their computer and plug it into yours. However, not sll hotels will allow that and you may find yourself without an internet connection to you computer.

Therefore, it is essentail that you find exactly the nature of the internet connection before you proceed. Personally, I think Wifi is by far the best.

Do not get between a wombat and a chocolate biscuit; you will regret it dearly!

Yes, I think I'll just take my cable along with me and hope for the best. Sadly, WiFi etc are things I've not needed to bother with before I should take time out to learn about and update my hardware/systems!

      Thanks both

You can find a wireless usb adapter that will work. It will be a bit slower than your cable connection, but it will connect at most hotels/airports. They are relatively cheap and easy to figure out
