When I see those ads, it's amazing how society has changed. All of those ads are ... completely inappropriate now.

  • Hey — if Matt Damon is brewing up the Chase & Sanborn, I'm not complaining.

And if it's for Johnny Depp (in full pirate gear) then I'm filming the show.

But yeah, Jeezis, history was such a bummer.

As for the radioactive mayo: no way am I hangin' out on any kinda planet aswill with that stuff.

The commercial breaks on TV are annoying enough without Trojan bustin' into the lead dinghy market.

Maybe I'm missing something here. Or maybe they've upped the maximum dosage to 100/500 without making it public knowledge.

I wonder which contemporary ads being shown now will be viewed as inappropriate or downright offensive 50 years from now.

Not sure how much things have changed.

If you read the first 3 lines on the "glands and radium" image - I'd swear I saw that same text on a niche site recently....

All of the text on that one is hilarious!

No, nothing new here, l still need an interpreter!

Yeah, l know, pretty good sales copy, eventhough this product is really promoting the most cherished part of the weak, disco rouged male's anatomy falling off.

But that doesn't matter too much they will be dead soon enough!

I find it amazing that in the 1920's l could walk into a toy shop and buy a Atomic science kit, (with a small jar of Uranium).

I am surprised no=one has used this in a movie?

But yeah, some uramium based products had 10 years of testing by scientists, so in the future, l suspect that we will know what Botox injections really do. And several other dodgy practices.

But it is more important for Real women to learn how to undress in front of their husbands?

Skip the first part, there is a video later on, pretty funny!

Yes, if women undressed properly, we would have a more stable society, groan!

It hasn't been that long ago that science classes in high schools would dump drops of mercury on a lab table for students to play with....

Yeah, you can bet that the average X "teacher" never knew all that much about X. I have heard of classes being dumbed down, or skipped, because the "teacher" didn't have access to the "teacher" edition. THAT is a special book, like the students book, but it has ALL the answers, and ALL the work, and comes with some other info. With student books, you are lucky if they have half the answers and any of the work, and that the methods are anywhere in the book.

As for the ad with the man spanking the woman? That was just to illustrate a point in a funny way. In THOSE days, as long as you kept away from some taboos that are VERY old, kept the dress decent, didn't use certain words, and didn't imply certain things, all was fine. DON'T think they were saying it was OK to spank adults, etc... The ad was targeted towards WOMEN, because THEY did most of the buying! HECK, lucy and ricky slept in separate beds, and jeanie didn't have a belly button, because of the CENSORS! Like kids didn't have belly buttons they may question ANYWAY!

BTW WHY would genies have belly buttons anyway? I mean they are, as I understand it, a muslim creation that is akin to a fallen angel.

Well, Jeanie was seriously hot, so you don't want to torture the teenagers, (which l was back then) too much!

Well, in the 80's l was!

They replayed those ones, til the early 2000,s if l remember correctly, at least til, tv went into the dark ages.

The Brady Bunch had one bed, but that started in the late 60's. Not sure about Lost in Space, pretty sure it was two beds?

Well, I saw an I dream of Jeanie marathon only a few days ago! Lost in space was impractical. Nobody considered what they had to do. They kept redesigning the ship. I don't know if they EVER showed them in bed.

WOW, I guess I don't get the belly button bit. That whole area is nice, but I guess I never saw the belly button as a part of that. In fact, the idea about the midrift, legs, breast area, etc.... being bare is FAR bigger, but that is why the US and a number of other countries looked down on showing that stuff.
HECK, in the early twentieth century, bathing suits were unbelievably modest.

I'm kind of surprised they even show the feminine curves.

Hmmm, lucky thing, but l did take a peek at the AU tv guide and they are replaying I Dream of Jeannie, so, l suppose that the horse isn't stone dead, at least not yet?

Yes, the belly button can be pretty sexy, but as you were saying, it needs to relate to other areas.

Who decides if something is "appropriate" or not? I like those ads I wish they were around today. I like the old tv ads too (both American TV ads and UK ads). People are too sensitive nowadays always finding something to be offended by or being offended on behalf of others.

From my own collection of vintage publications, late1800s and early 1900s. Even back then, women were being made to feel insecure about their bodies

This one may have a different connotation today...
