There are a LOT of possible reasons why people are driving less. My average daily commute to work is ZERO MILES! OK, OK, I HAVE been traveking more LATELY! TODAY, I probably walked almost 50 feet to work! Every now and then, I DO travel on a plane, but so do many others, and it keeps a LOT of people in business. Outside of large companies(that SOME want to DESTROY), and minimum wage jobs, various internet businesses(that may change abruptly), and cyber commuting, it seems that people will spend MORE time commuting. That IS why rush hour has been so bad for DECADES! But none of that is because of the generation. It is because of the time.

Yeah, that is ANOTHER thing! The ONLY benefit that pedestrians really have over cars is that they weigh on average maybe a 15th(about 150lb vs maybe 2000) as much, and go at about 15th(about 3mph vs maybe 45mph) of the speed. So I guess they are less likely to get hurt, though there ARE people that are FAR heavier and a minor trip by a person 20' away could trigger an event that could kill you.

As for trains and the like? MAYBE in Europe, but I have been to wasington DC, airports, and a few other places, and have seen people in Chicago, new York, etc.... People will GLADLY event WASTE minutes even if it means you waste a day. They JUST DON'T CARE! Given a choice, people would rather be away from that and use CARS!

So getting rid of cars is just NOT the answer! As for making people more caring? IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN! Schools and governments WANT discord. I guess it makes sense. If people had common sense, and cared, and were altruistic, schools would VANISH, because people could learn more organically. And GOVERNMENTS would vanish! POVERTY, FILTH, DISEASE, ETC... would ALSO vanish.

But DREAM ON, IT WON'T! AGENDA 21s supposed vision is to have people live in effectively communes, so they could walk to work,etc... It is ironic that they claim to want technology and the like, and you can BET the "leaders" want it for THEMSELVES, but they want to deny it to others. And they want people to WALK while they fly to the other side of the planet in private planes to resorts to claim to be discussing solutions to OTHER peoples problems.

Temporary fad. Reminds me of the '60's-'70's hippies opposing the established lifestyles of their parents. Their kids, if they have any, could just as well oppose that lifestyle and make very different choices. It doesn't strike me that not having your own car is a one-size attitude that fits everyone.

We have to have a car when I live, there's not much in the way of public transportation that's close enough to walk and the stores aren't close enough to walk and lug the groceries home, etc. and etc.

It may become more common when more people work almost exclusively from their home office. Once you have children, a vehicle is really a necessity, not a luxury.

20 years ago, USA Today did a study and found that most people will spend at least 5 years of their lives simply waiting in lines.

Thanks to the internet, I'm sure that number will be cut down.

But much of the time saved there will be lost waiting for web pages to load.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.
