Ok, I know it's a scam somehow - I just don't see how they *make* money on it...

Guy texts me saying he is speech impaired (first red flag -- he cannot talk on the phone).

Then he says he wants me to build him a website. Then I ask him (all via text) what town he's in. He says he's in Illinois. I DO have craigslist ads for website design -- but I am on Maui -- so how did this guy in Illinois *find* me??? -- 2nd red flag.

Then he texts me a complicated plan to "pay me." It includes the words "Wells Fargo." 3rd red flag.

I told him to email me a CLEAR description of the "plan" to pay me.

Here's what he wrote...

The favor i need from you is. i would give you my card info's to charge for $4000,plus 5% credit card charge fee,so $1850 would be a deposit payment for my website design and the remaining $2150 you would help me send it to the project consultant that has the text content and the logo for my website so once he has the $2150 he would send the text content and logo needed for my website to you also the funds would be sent to VIA him HIS BANK ACCOUNT which is Wellsfago Bank, your sending of funds would be after funds clear into your own account and also $100 tip for your stress,Hope to hear from you soon.
Let me have your cell number and also which info do you need from my card to be charge for the total sum..

Now, what's the scam, and how do they end up with money?

Is he asking me to use a stolen credit card, and give some of the money to him?

I'm just curious to find out what the scam is. (no, I'm not gonna do what he says).

Yes, l have been scammed by one piece of s***, but it was far more elaborate than this creatures attempt!

Most likely he would go to a Giraffe site, (giraffe sites have lists of skimmed CC numbers, from the research l did) grab a dozen credit card numbers, and use that to send you the $1850.

Then most likely crap on about not being able to get the rest straight away, because his dying mother needs, a new tv, or something?

You transfer the $2150, (out of your own pocket) to the fictitious bank, (which is his accomplice, or his) by probably Western Union, since there is no way to get it back with that one!

At this point you are $2150 out of pocket, this is assuming that you can dispute the first deposit and not have to pay out of your own pocket, otherwise it is $4000?

And a few days later when the original CC owners see a transaction that they didn't do and file a dispute with you to get their money back, you have also lost the $1850!

Well if it is WU, you have lost it, PayPal, maybe not!

I had this happen to me all the time with my WSO product, an affiliate would sell it, and l would get a dispute a few days later, saying that l didn't buy this where is my money.

Most of the time Paypal would cover it, but occasionally with their constant rule changes they wouldn't.

Got sick of making peanuts and dealing with this crap, and losing money, so l pulled the affiliate side of it!

    This smells fishy to me.

No, doubt he will ring you and be in tears about you not following through since his mother will explode if she doesn't get website done in time?

As l said, l have dealt with this crap before, very devious or they cover all bases, so you never see it again

Wow... This is insane. This is the first I've heard of this. I have a few posts out in the internet about if anyone needs help setting up a WordPress site and getting it set up as a monetized business, I'll help them.

But just wow. Thank you very much for this. If someone contacts me with this type of information, I'll be sure to never respond to that.

    Seriously... That's not cool.

    Note -- his phone # is 443-40*-**11.

I texted him that I was declining the "project."
I also told him that tonight is movie night and I was renting the movie
"The Sting." -- Then I said, that's a movie I'm sure you've seen many times.

    Haven't heard from him since.

What's so bad about wells fargo? Wells fargo is, today, a company that is like B of A used to be. They have a LOT of customers, and one is PAYPAL! That said, you should NEVER directly involve a third party on the request of a customer/partner/, etc...,, like this It can create a lot of problems, and can even be a FELONY! BTW I said YOU should never DIRECTLY involve them. If you want to suggest, as a separate business, or internally subcontract, on your own, that is fine. But THAT guy was too specific here. The third party may even be HIM. So HE steals the card, obfuscates the theft by making YOU culpable, and you give HIM laundered money that he can say he got LEGALLY. YOU could be charged with HIS crime. In ant event, YOU are out of the money!

What you describe could EASILY be a plan like tagiscom describes, and the law calls that MONEY LAUNDERING, which is a felony. GRANTED, they may consider you innocent, but that is only because you are a VICTIM!

This is a common scam - I get requests like this regularly, 2-3 times a week.

I have a canned response - I tell them my policy is to require a cash or certified check deposit for first-time clients that aren't referrals. I never hear back from them.

I haven't heard anything about this particular scam being used in many years.
Unfortunately many of us are suckers for scams.
Yes I have been scammed like about 10 years ago at this point.
        Lesson learned.

Just a friendly warning - Terra has the prerogative of the use of pink on this forum. I don't know what will happen if or when she sees this, but it won't be pretty.

I had to go digging through my archives to find this one.
It took this man $45, 000 big ones to realize that he was being scammed.
                Check it out.

This is not an attack on you personally. Posting in pink text makes your posts damned hard to read.

As Karen pointed out, we're a fun mob down here and we want to be able to read what you've posted, even if it's silly. In fact, we won't to read your posts especially if they're silly.
