Westerns making a comeback? Hateful Eight among other movies coming out

Anybody else looking forward to the Hateful Eight this Christmas? We also had Bone Tomahawk (great death scene in there) and Slow West get released recently. Also read a good article on some really superb westerns that have been made in modern times and I wonder if the genre isn't ready for a comeback. Or did it ever go away?

Any western fans in here?

I like good movies in general... Yeah, Bone Tomahawk, what a way to go--medieval and brutal. Haven't seen the Hateful Eight trailer...

High Noon, Unforgiven, and Open Range are still my favorites. Seen most in the link of superb westerns you posted excepting a couple. In terms of cinematography, check out The Salvation (2014). The story is good and the cast all right, but for me, the visuals carry the movie.

Edit: How can I forget? -- The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Isn't Hateful Eight just a film that Quentin Tarantino wanted to do, rather than one that has come about as a result of demand for Westerns? I have a vague memory of reading that somewhere but I dont know where.

Yep. Speaking personally, I have no great love for westerns but I will see anything Tarantino puts out there.

It will be successful (to whatever extent it is) because of the inherent popularity of the director, not the genre.

Yeah, I've learned to watch anything Tarantino puts out.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

If anybody can bring them back from the dead it's Tarantino.

Aren't you forgetting Django Unchained? Tarantino's already had a go at westerns. He's a self-confessed western fan (as am I) and has been referencing classic westerns, including western soundtracks, since he started making movies.

For some of us, the genre never went away.
