Fanduel and DraftKings must close in NY

Did anyone else read about the attorney general cutting off all DFS in New York?

I don't live in NY so it doesn't affect me, yet but I'm definitely worried about what this could mean for other states and DFS in general.

I can't be the only one on this forum who uses daily fantasy sports to make extra money can I?

Fantasy sports (and the gambling associated with it) has even made its way to the GOP presidential debate. For example: Chris Christie not amused by fantasy football question | OnPolitics

There's definitely lots of heat in that space.

Personally, online gambling should be legalized. Imagine all the new jobs and tax revenue.

Anything the state doesn't control or get a cut of it bans. While it's doing that it's building casinos all over the state.

Perhaps it's being used to launder money, you know, just like in the legal casinos.

So that blind people can hate them as well.

Daily fantasy is definitely more "gambling" than online poker (which is banned in almost all states). It's only a matter of time before other states follow suite.

Personally, I'd allow both but like ThomM said, the government wants control and a cut of $ from it. They don't actually care about the people who play daily DFS even though that's what they want everyone to believe. People who can't afford DFS or online poker will just buy more lottery tickets from the local convenience store.

I really don't think DFS is gambling. You win nearly every time if you are doing it the right way. It's more skill and just knowing what other people are going to do than gambling.

I heard last night that there's a class action lawsuit in federal court in California to sue Fanduel for misleading or false advertising. Apparently Fanduel claims they will match $200 of your initial investment but you would have to spend $5000 to get that $200. Not a very good deal if true. Lol

I was thinking of joining but haven't yet Eric. Can you briefly share what you mean by doing it the right way and knowing what others are going to do? Or is that a WSO in the making?

Doing it the "right way" means to study your butt off and basically make it a full time job.

Fantasy sports are in a tough situation, from a legal and marketing point of view. For the legal aspect, they can show that a very low percentage of people win the vast majority of money. This is a good sign of skill.

However, to say that a very low percentage of people win the vast majority of money isn't a very good marketing strategy.

For some reason, "rock" and a "hard place" comes to mind.

Kurt, I guess that's one way to look at it. But doing it the "right way" to me, means paying to get the picks of others who successfully make thousands per week with DFS.

That's the only "right way" for me because I wouldn't consider making it a full time job when there's someone else who does do it full time and is willing to sell their information.

From a marketing standpoint, they don't seem to really be touting the fact that it is a game of skill or that a small majority win (which is the same in life).

What they are marketing is that people can go and try to make money betting on their favorite players (and then lose their money) which is why they are having legal troubles.

They say it is not gambling it is a game of skill... like poker. Except poker is considered gambling.

John Oliver did a great bit on Fanduel and Draftkings.
