I have happened to watch a few episodes (SG Atlantis) and I am wondering.
When some guys go through the gate, how are they able to communicate with the rest of the crew that was left behind. It seems they can communicate in the real time.

Is it a blunder or is there a scientific (read: sci-fi) explanation to this? Do the electric waves travel though the gate or somehow they figured out how to speed them up beyond the speed of light? Perhaps it was explained in the movie?

I can almost understand how the robot (whatever they call it) can send the telemetry data when the gate is active.

There was an episode where the star ship got stuck in the gate. So half of it was demolecularized, but wasn't transmitted to the other side, because the gate only sends objects in one piece. Somehow it knows. A verification hash code?

What happens if you push your hand in and want to pull it back? Would you be able to or would it already be demolecularized? In other words, no changing your mind once you stuck your head in!

I liked Stargate SG1 and the later episodes of Atlantis. Stargate Universe was crap and did not last long. Never change a successful format.

No comments on any alleged science behind it. "Indeed"

True, communication should only be one way, but it has two way communication. Maybe if they sent transmissions via subspace through an active wormhole, it could overcome this?

Over vast distances subspace communication is a given, so this is probably how they get over this issue?

And no, it wasn't mentioned in the original movie.

As for half the ship being stuck in the active wormhole, all data from an object is held in the gates buffer, or memory, and will only transfer when all the data or object is through.

And if you put your hand into a Stargate's event horizon, just before it is due to shut down, then safety protocols in the gate would extent the limit, (that was in SGU).

I am watching SGA, at the moment, Mackey and John Shepards interactions are pretty funny at times. A bit like slapstick humor!

It must be hell for Mackeys actor to remember his lines?

Stargate Universe was crap, yeah, l agree there was too many flashbacks and swapping stones for a boring visit to Earth.

But the second season overall is pretty good!

      Worth a look!

SGU is interesting since it is a darker version of SGA!

        It's McKay.
But my fav. line is by John Sheppard: "We'll name it later!"
I've seen the first 4 episodes.
I'm only watching it, because I can watch it on my mobile device using Time Machine and skip the commercials. I watch it whenever I have some free chunks of time. Otherwise sitting an entire hour in front of TV? I'd rather read classic literature or watch an online science lecture.

They are running SGU right now as well, but I couldn't even watch one episode, so boring.

        Back to SGA.
OMG, the manoeuvres of the spaceship!! I am not questioning the speeds and instant turns. It's an alien technology, everything is possible. But I never seen a seatbelt, the crew members are standing or walking around while it accelerates or turns. It would be possible to stand when the ship was traveling in straight uniform motion no matter what the speed. But remember the episode where the ship had to fly through the gate and come to an instant stop after passing thought it? Guess what. The crew would be dead due to the excessive physical stress, unless they get smashed into the front wall by inertia.

Give SGU a chance, or at least fast forward most of season one, season two is much better overall.

Most of season two is better, and even the dull earth visits have been reduced. And the attractive red head is welcome!

But there is one show in season two where a triffiod like thing takes over someone. Most of the show is in a small US town, and is seriously boring, so you can skip that one!

Nah, they have dampners that can allow l think up to mark 25 before it becomes ineffective.

Yes, Mackay, last one l saw was the third installment of the fight with the Replicators. Rodney does his usual clicking of fingers and Shepard, wants to slap him about for it!

Modern day version of Abbot and Costello.

Probably my fav, scene is when Shepard talks about Wreath, to someone, and he says that the Clowns getting out of their Volkswagons are worse, pretty funny!

Their Star Trek remarks are good also.

People have DIED, or have been CRIPPLED, by the inertia in a CAR against a seat belt! The faster a plane goes, the more protection you need. LUCKILY commercial jets are flown so carefully usually that the inertia is evenly applied. It feels like you are going like 5 miles an hour when you are REALLY going over 300. But look at the fighter jets that go SO much faster! They have special belts, special clothes, and STILL it can get to you.

If you went at the speed of light, and suddenly slowed to half the speed of light, you would probably be cut in two. So they would CERTAINLY need some kind of method to cushion the inertia, and in nearly every sci fi show talking about such fast travel, the speak of "inertial dampeners" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inertia_negation

As for SGU, it was a DARK subject, and required a lot of explanation, and they had trouble coming up with a lot of other things, so it WAS a flop there. The OTHER shows had more to play with.

Inertial dampers would have to be standard fayre in ships like that. If any of the UFO's reported in our sky's doing impossible turns are true then that would also be the case. Unless they are moving from one place to another by flipping in and out of our universe. Alleged evidence that some occasionally crash though would support the need for inertial dampers.

No, maybe l didn't make myself clear, they can materialize but only by an atom in thickness, (which isn't enough to form molecules, etc, so the man effectively demilitarizes into an atomic soup, that most likely gets absorbed by the event horizon or force field.

Remember the episode, where the enemy tried to heat up the stargate barrier by spinning several gates at once. Someone asked Carter how could it heat up the gate, and she said an atom is still enough!

But trillions of atoms slamming into a barrier, that would be like taking an ultra thin sheet and slamming it into something else at 10 km a second. It should make some sound?

Heisenberg Compensator, wasn't that Star Trek?

You can't even let one ATOM appear! There are SOME atoms where ONE atom is supposed to be DEADLY to humans, and we don't know really how complex atoms can get. There is one element that is supposed to be SO toxic that a 1 atom thick layer on the star gate could be enough to possibly kill many THOUSANDS of people. As for the sound it would make, I doubt it.

I liked ALL of them! Stargate universe was an attempt to answer a few questions left by the others, such as hw did they escape to a place that others couldn't get to or from, and how the gates were setup in the first place. Still, most of the stries were weak.

The communications is based on the fallacy they portrayed that a wormhole could be exploited for a long time(though they said it couldn't), and that it would allow radio waves through, thugh that is generally considered WRONG.

As for the moleculatization, supposedly that is due to the wormhole, and the way it is used. But THERE TOO, there are pardoxes, etc... Like if it DOESN;T materialize after coming through, then how come the shield FAILS, so you can hear the attempts? If it DOES materialize after coming through, then how come the shield WORKS, and the bombs didn't blow up EVERYTHING?

Yeah, they want you to suspend belief. The less you get drawn in, the sillier it seems.

Hmmm, l was going to answer that one, but was too tired.

No, the shield or mechanical shield, is about an atom from the event horizon, so any mass data cannot demoleculatize.

An atom isn't enough for all of the data to form again, but it is enough to hear the thuds. Gotta have thuds, it is cool!

But what happens to the mass, it still dem,.... at the atom level, so that means that the mechanical shield at Stargate Command have unconstituted bodies, etc floating about near the gate?

But who cares it only needs to be reasonably plausible?

But if the event horizon is 1 to the 28 power, and something goes wrong?

      Probably wipe the Earth out?

As I indicated, if it is right, it is wrong. That is a BAD place to be were you have to break a theory to show another.

OH, they EXPLAINED that! THAT is one reason it was built so far underground with all of those protections. STILL, did you see the episode where they connected with a planet that was about to get swallowed up by a black hole? Everything near the gate slowed down to a snails crawl, and they had to struggle to get to the top were they could have someone spend like a week deciding how to solve the problem they figured had to be solved in like a day.

Yep, seen the lot, well, half of season two of SGU, since the a*** won't play it on tv!

If l remember correctly ONeil had to put a bomb near the event horizon to get it to close down?

And l am not sure, that l put my foot in it, if a human being stepped through and hit a shield, his few trillion atoms slamming into it, might make a thud sound?

And the shield was within the event horizon on the gate, so l guess there wouldn't be any stray atoms?

Although the gate might need a clean?

I'm one of few people who LOVED SG Universe. The cast was awesome and the overall dark, gritty theme was a welcome change.

The first season was so-so, but the second one got much better. I still have hopes and dreams that it will be picked up, even after all these years. Not a chance, though.

Yes, l liked the first season, although the pebble swapping trips to Earth got a bit boring?

The second season, where the scientist gets found out, (l won't say any more, some here, might want to watch it) is good) and as you are saying the gritty feel is welcome.

SGA, is gritty too, but they tend to go back to a nice, shiny city on the ocean, a bit like going to war and going home on the weekend.

The visuals are spectacular, and the music, usually at the end is a welcome addition.

I am not looking forward to seeing the entire second season, since as you have said, there is no more, and unfortunately they didn't wrap it up, so it will probably be a cliff edge ending.

I only watch about one a week, l tend to watch SGA most of the time!
