Vick signs deal with Eagles - Yahoo! News

Surprised this thread wasn't put up earlier, but as a fan of the game of football, I say this:

WELCOME BACK MICHAEL VICK!

Hopefully people will let his past go and focus on his skills as a quarterback.
Maybe he can put that spark back in the Eagles and give them a shot at the playoffs.

I wonder how he fits in Philly.

Obviously McNabb is the man there. I wonder if they would use Vick in a wildcat formation with him as another RB..or even as a WR.

Maybe they stick to conventional and just use him in case of a McNabb injury.

Which you can pretty much bank on... Donnie's getting a little more fragile these days.

The dink and dunk offense will be a good fit for Vick.

    1-2-3, throw it somewhere.

Perhaps he'll run back punts like Joe Thiesman did before he became a starter.

Michael 'Sick' Vick SUCKS! And so do the Eagles for allowing him to play. He should be banned from the NFL on morals clauses.

Right and the rest of the NFL players have morals.
Now that is a sick statement.
I'm from Atlanta and glad to see him go, but not because of the dog fighting. He did his time and everything else he was required to do.
But the NFL has his number by containing him to the inside. If he can't stand in the pocket and wait then he will be pounded in the turf. Got to throw the short pass to make the bomb effective.

I never said the rest of the NFL players have morals. Many of them do, and good ones at that, and there are always the bad apples, but I didn't say a thing about the rest of the players in the NFL.

The ones that screw up are penalized for their bad behavior and rightfully so. One has to sit the rest of the season out without pay for driving drunk and killing a pedestrian. He's losing $700,000 of his contract for that (not to mention the legal penalties), and again, rightfully so.

Michael Vick? That was not a one-time screw up, it wasn't an accident. He knew exactly what he was doing and that was running a criminal enterprise, one that profited from the misery of other living beings. He knowingly put money ahead of anothers suffering and that is inexcusable.

That is what's sick. He even threw his own family pets into the ring with fighting dogs and laughed as they were viciously and fatally wounded, unable to defend themselves.

Now that he's playing again I sincerely hope someone drops him on his head and leaves him paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of his life. Then see if anyone shows him any pity.

And Vick lost 2 years of football, millions of dollars more AND spent 20 months in a federal penitentiary.

He suffered significantly worse than Stallworth, and he didn't even kill someone!

I loathe what he did - but he paid a stiff punishment. Now that he has done that - he should be allowed to resume his life.

Hey, I have no problem with the fool resuming his life. Just not in the NFL. There's other things he can do to earn a living. It's not like he's broke and about to go on food stamps.

Vick's own words from the 60 Minutes interview:

"I let myself down, you know, not being out on the football field, being in a prison bed, in a prison bunk, writing letters home, you know. That wasn't my life. That wasn't the way that things was supposed to be. And all because of the so-called culture that I thought was right - that I thought it was cool. And I thought it was, you know, it was fun, and it was exciting at the time. It all led to me laying in a prison bunk by myself with no one to talk to but myself."

            BS! ME, ME, ME!

He thought it was cool to torture animals? It was fun?

"I was disgusted, you know, because of what I let happen to those animals," he said. "I could've put a stop to it. I could've walked away from it. I could've shut the whole operation down."

            But he DIDN'T!

Vick said he initially lied about being involved in dogfighting because he realized his career was in jeopardy.

"I felt the guilt and I knew I was guilty, and I knew what I had done," he said. "And, not knowing at the time that, you know, actually telling the truth may have been better than, you know, not being honest. And it backfired on me tremendously."

Here's some truth: He had choices to make and he made them. Unfortunately, the animals had no choice at all.

Michael Vick says he cried in prison

I don't feel sorry for him one bit.

I guess we will agree to disagree.

He paid his due his life can now resume - it is up to him to stay out of trouble and if doesn't he will be sent back to jail. If he does not break the law, there is no reason to ban him from the NFL.

Many of the Vick dogs were saved and rehabilitated and given homes. We didn't destroy his life, he did. All that money and he couldn't find anything else "fun" to do? What an idiot. He should be banned just for being so stupid. And it runs in his family. His brother is also a thug.

He fought dogs. Big deal. They were pitbulls, probably born bred and trained for this exact purpose. I saw a program on many of those dogs that were 'saved', yeah, like you'll have that animal in your house or around kids. It would be like moving a rehabilitated mass murderer into your home and hoping for the best.

People in this country have this weird issue with animals. They think because they can pet one, that they all are pets, never to be considered for food, or fighting..etc.

Let one of those dogs nip a little kid and watch and see how fast it gets put down, but if Vick fights the dog, its an oh so terrible thing and we must MAKE HIM PAY!!!.

he's done his time thats all he needs to do.

You have weird issues with animals, not "this country". And "putting down" a dog is a lot different than hanging them, or body slamming them to death.

And I never said he didn't deserve a chance to play in the NFL. I said he caused his own problems. Morals/ethics aside, it's against the law to fight dogs. It takes a real idiot with $70 million dollars and a high profile to blatantly break the law as Vick did. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

As far as having one in my house, I prefer rotties...You know, the dogs with the stongest bite of all domestic dogs.

I dont have any weird issues with animals. I know right where they belong, under me on the food chain. Just because i pet it today doesnt mean we're on equal ground. Its still an animal and spends the biggest part of its day licking its own butt. But people in this country think that just because THEY have something as a pet that everyone else should view that animal as a pet as well. Not everyone views dogs the same, some people grow up with fighting dogs, fighting roosters, snakes..etc. Its their thing.

dead is dead, whether its being bodyslammed or injected, the end result is the same. it just makes people feel better that fido 'goes quietly' in a doctors office, but somethign tells me if you asked fido, he wouldnt be able to tell the difference.

That's pretty sick. I'm a dog trainer by profession so obviously I love dogs, perhaps my opinion is biased, but I don't think so. To say that there is no difference between torturing an animal and giving an injection to put down an ill dog is sociopathic. I feel for the people around you.

As far as Vick goes, I'm hopeful for him. He's paid his debt to society so I don't think he should be banned like so many are screaming for.

Ty, gotta agree with you on the first part. Sociopaths have no remorse and torturing animals is one of the signs that many sociopaths display.

As for the second part, you are more forgiving than me. I respect that, but I won't be watching any game with him in it and it really irks me that he is getting paid all of that money while so many others deserve to have a shot at the very position that he now occupies.

It's a better your team driven decision for the Eagles to bring Vick into the fold.

He's getting paid all that money because he could really make a difference for the Eagle team - if Mcnaab gets injured.

Who are these so many deserving others you speak of???

Right now, Vick's easily better ( in terms of being able to help a team win ) than at least half the starting Qbs in the NFL - even after a 2 year layoff.

The position is weak and talent is quite thin.

I heard this morning that Vick has the 6th highest winning percentage of QBs in the league.

                    He's a proven winner.

In NFL terms, he's easily worth 1.6 for this year.

I saw the interview also and was not convinced at all.

If there was any real remorse it is for allowing his "friends" to talk him into the stuff in the first place and the shame is for the public humiliation.

                        But so what.

He's going to say and do all the right things to the right people etc., etc. etc.

                        Bottom line...

He actually served time in a jail for breaking the law and if the NFL wants him back then so be it.

I bear no ill will towards him and I suspect that most that do, have a envy problem with him making that kind of money before and after the fact.

                        Question???

Is anti dog fighting a national law or just a state law?

I believe it is NATIONAL! There are laws concerning the treatment of animals in general.

EVEN at least some animals for food are to be treated no worse than a certain level. Puppy mills are illegal. ASPCA | Laws That Protect Dogs in Puppy Mills

Some animals can't be even DISTURBED! Still others may be shot but ONLY at certain times and places or in certain cases. HECK, they even allow fishing but certain fish must be released!

Why, no, of course not. We should applaud him and what he did, give him endless awards and pat him on the back, he's such a great humanitarian.

You're damned right he should lose his career over this. He was making better money than most people yet he still had to have more by financing and operating an illegal dog fighting operation at his home. Kids will look up to this 'great' football player, and he has shown he doesn't have what it takes to be a role model.

Football isn't the only thing he can do. He can find another way to earn a living, hopefully a legal way.

I have absolutely no sympathy or pity for scum like him. He made the decision to do it, not me.

The ironic thing, it's in Philly with the most abusive fans ever. Not only did they boo Santa, Bob Ueker said they booed the kids at an Easter egg hunt that didn't find any eggs/candy. That's a rough crowd.

Mike Vick is a tremendous talent, but as a QB I see him as average.Sure he can run and is elusive but what is his completion percentage.Somewhere around 45%. Being a dog person I thought what he did was awful. But to sit and judge him like I've never made a mistake in my life would be slightly pompous.Yes this is directed at you "star".He'll get his second chance and I hope he makes the most of it. I have all of the respect in the world for Tony Dungy and if he says Vick is a changed man then that's good enough for me.

Yeah but his elusiveness and running is sooo beyond what any QB has ever been able to do. Like even more than Cunningham who was prolly regarded as the best running QB ever.

He just causes insane match up problems. I would have loved to see him in Miami - they brought the wildcat back to the NFL - and I can imagine how much more effective it would be with Brown/Williams AND Vick.

Yes he has never put together a full year of great passing - but before this dog incident I think he very well could of. He was stuck in Atlanta where they changed their style of play like 3 times when he was QB - that's not fair to a guy trying to learn the passing game. They also never had a number one receiver...barely a number 2 in fact.

I remember one game Atlanta played Miami and destroyed them - Vick put on a passing show - he was making passes that very few if ANY QB at the time could have made - it was almost surreal. It is too bad he had to be an idiot and fight dogs/gamble - because now it will be nearly impossible to put it all together and be the complete package.

Passing percentage is a function of what type of offense you run.

The Falcons under Vick ran the ball and passed in the medium or long range most of the time.

The Steelers of the 70's had the same offensive philosophy but their passing games was much more effective.

( they did not pass the ball short because Chuck Noll thought it was a waste of time. )

Vick was never in a true west coast dink and dunk type of offense where the Qb will have a high completion percentage simply because most of his passes are under 10 yards.

Joe Namouth barely completed over 50% of his passes why? He threw medium and long most of the time.

Passing percentage is a function of what type of offense you run.

Hmm you might have quoted wrong person - I never said anything about passing percentage - guy before me did.

We are almost agreeing in fact since I was responding to the poster who DID mention passing percentage that Vicks passing problems were largely attributed to the offenses he was stuck in and almost perpetually learning a new offense.

The original guy who brought up his percentage was off base anyways. Outside of his limited rookie year Vick never had less than a 50% rating.

The more telling stats for Vick would be things like INT% where he ranked near top of league his final three seasons. He just wasn't a very accurate passer regardless of length of pass. Again I sort of agree with you because I think it was more a problem with the offensive schemes he was in AND the cast of bums he had at WR all his time in Atlanta.

I'm still glad the Bucs didn't pick him up.
Nothing against him on a personal level, just don't think he is as good a quarterback as some of you think he is.

Ahhh....the joys of living with a blonde.

Just seconds ago the local sports guy was going to commercial break and my GF who was only half listening to the TV looked at me and asked "Did he just call Vick a MORON???"

"No. He SAID...'when we return from a word from our sponsors we'll have MORE ON MICHAEL VICK..."

Sheesh. (Or maybe you'd have to have been here)

  • He hung these animals. He abused the dogs that wouldn't fight or performed poorly. I have seen the film of the aftermath of his brutal treatment of these dogs. No excuse in the world works for me.

No one should excuse his behavior, either. True, people make mistakes, but this mistake speaks volumes of the soul (or lack of) of this particular individual.

My brother in law has a pit bull. She is the sweetest dog in the world and has never shown any aggression towards anyone.

Interesting.......fighting and hanging and abusing animals are ok?

What Vic did is show that he is a thug and gangster, just like the people he was hanging with........only difference is that he is supposed to be a professional and part of a prestigious organization that the NFL is....

At this point, I could really care less about him. He repeatedly killed and abused the dogs and showed no remorse or regard for them.

Honestly, I was quite disappointed that the NFL gave him a second chance.

Did he give any of his dogs that same chance?

Somehow you are justifying his abuse as not really that bad or something along those lines (at least that is what it seems in your post).....

He should have been banned for life from the NFL. Yes, he did some time for what he did. And that he should have done. It seems that people are willing to look beyond his lack of character because he IS a football player.

To that, I say "big deal".

There are hundreds, if not thousands of football players out there who deserve the chance that he blew and they don't torture and murder animals.

Anyone that loves animals and detests bullies and thugs, should feel the same. Far too often, we as a society, give these guys way too much authority to break all kinds of laws and behavior poorly, simply because they are NFL players.

It is high time that this particular practice stops. We need to send a message that NFL players are human beings just like us, and need to be held to the same standards of civility and behavior. No more free passes.

He paid his LEGAL price. Now, he should pay the ultimate price and NOT be employed by any football team, period.

I wish him the best, but not as a NFL player. There is NO excuse for what he did, period.
