Steve Wagenheim's Song Contest...Top Prize $100 (Winners Have Been Posted)

Okay folks, I'm finally doing this.

Here is how the contest will work along with the rules and prizes.

I am going to upload to YouTube 3 songs (picked at random from my last
3 CDs)

What you need to do, in order, is guess the genre and sub genre of each
song before you actually hear them.

For example:

A main genre would be ROCK

Sub genres would be:

Punk Rock
Pop Rock
Acid Rock
Progressive Rock
Heavy Metal
Speed Metal
Arena Rock
Country Rock
Soft Rock
Hard Rock
Blues Rock
Psychedelic Rock

And so on.

You must match the sub genre EXACTLY as decided by the judges.

If a genre is an entire genre unto itself (i.e. adult contemporary) then
the genre is good enough. Some genres really don't have sub genres.

And of course a lot of music is subjective and can even cross over to
more than one genre.

(I'll get to the judging soon)

Each person posting will post in the following format:

Song 1 -
Song 2 -
Song 3 -

So your 3 guesses might be:

Song 1 - Classical Orchestral
Song 2 - Opera
Song 3 - Classical Piano

Even though all 3 are part of classical music, they are all different as
far as this contest goes. That's why answers have to be as specific as
possible.

In other words:

Song 1 - Rock
Song 2 - Pop
Song 3 - Country

Isn't going to cut it for this contest. Generic responses will not be
considered.

The date the contest will close and the songs uploaded to YouTube is
August 22, 2009.

Now we get to judging.

Because I want to be as fair about this as possible, I am going to open
the judging up to the members of this forum. The reason is because I have
a hard time classifying my own music. That should give you an idea of
how hard this is going to be. This way, what the majority of the members
decides for each song, that's what I'm going with...up to a point.

In other words, if a song features a piano, some strings and a set of
bagpipes and the members call it heavy metal just to allow somebody to
win, I'm going to overrule the judges decision. You have to be at least
reasonable with your choices.

Ultimately, my decision is final but I'm going to try to leave this contest
in your hands.

Now the prizes.

Song 1 Correct - $25
Song 2 Correct - $15
Song 3 Correct - $10

Trifecta (getting all 3 right) - $100

Now, naturally, more than one person might pick the correct genre for
any of the songs. Since only one prize is given for each song, the first
person to get the right genre will be given the prize.

Also, the first person to pick the trifecta will get the $100.

There is one last prize.

Let me be right up front about these songs. I am not a professional,
Don't expect to hear anything that's going to make the hall of fame.

However, I do value constructive feedback on my stuff.

So...the person who gives the best feedback on the tunes (offering
suggestions for improvement, what you liked, didn't like, why or why not
you think the music has commercial appeal) that person will get any one
of my products FREE.

To receive a money prize, you MUST have a PayPal account.

Okay, here are all the dates:

August 22 - All guesses must be in by this date
Augest 27 - All judging of songs for genre classification must be done
August 30 - All feedback must be posted
August 31 - All winners will be picked

That's it. That's the contest. $150 in prizes plus one of my products will
be given away. If nobody wins the trifecta, the money will be carried
over to the next contest.

Yes, there WILL be others.

Let the games begin.

    Hi Steven,

Are we suppose to start guessing now?

Do we get to see the titles first?

I want to play, but I felt like I was missing a key point somewhere.

Michael you start guessing now BEFORE you see the titles.

That would make it WAY too easy.

I had to post them so there is a written record that is verifiable since
forum posts CAN be changed...not that anybody would do that.

        Here are the 3 songs

        Song 1 - Title - A Little Jazz

Song 2 - Title - Drop Dead Blonde

Song 3 - Title - Rise Of Nations

I recorded these very loud so half volume on YouTube should be more than
good enough to hear them without being blown out of your seat.

In the descriptions, I put what I think the song is but as I said, you get
to vote on what you think the songs should be classified as. My decision
is final but if enough people believe it is one type and it is close enough,
        I'll go with your decision.

All judging of the songs must be completed by August 27th.

Feedback on the songs must be in by August 30th.

The winners will be announced on August 31st.

I will PM you for your PayPal address.

LOL - It's NOT too loud...........of course, I'm not too old.

Jazz for #1 just put ALL of us out of the running, Steve.

I can take or leave Jazz.
Drop Dead Blond was my favorite. It made me dance.

Steve, you closed the voting and uploaded too soon, but thats ok, I would have guessed them all wrong.
But I have to agree with Sal, Drop Dead Blond would be my favorite.
Rise of nations a close second, with A Little Jazz coming bringing up the rear.
    Drop Dead Blonde:
I'd call it pop rock.( For some strange reason,I just love anything with a cowbell).
    A Rise Of Nations:
    I'd call it Power Pop.
    A Little Jazz:
I'd say modern Jazz, but really, Jazz by yourself is sort of an oxymoron, if you get my meaning.

    Edit:
I later went to youtube and saw your classifications, and dammit, I think I would have won after all!

Kim, the contest opened on August 15th. Members had 7 days to get
their guesses in. With the title I had, I thought I'd have more of a
response than 7 members, but I guess I needed to give away $1,000 as
the top prize. Then maybe I would have gotten some buzz.

Anyway, at least now I know these things just don't go over well here
and won't waste my time doing another one.

Steven, this is what I was making my comment on:
"This is the last day to get your 3 song votes in.

Tomorrow (August 23rd) I'm uploading the videos to YouTube. I'll post the
links under this post. Any votes coming in after the links are posted will

    Which was posted yesterday.
    But I wasn't worried about the prize/money.
(even though I would have won )
But you're sounding dissapointed by the participation.
Maybe it was just me, maybe others will comment on this, but I thought the idea behind the contest was difficult. Let me rephrase it and correct me if needed:
"Name the 3 styles of music Steven is writing in without any clues"
That's how it came across to me.
Others may have gotten sonething else out of it.

But the botton line is you received some comments about your music and it seems to me to be all good. You should sit back and bask in the warmth of that instead of the negative.

Um...yeah...it wasn't meant to be easy, thus the reason why I felt the
prizes were fairly generous for basically giving 10 minutes of your time to
listen to a few tunes. How many people here have ever done anything like
this just for the fun of it? Very few since I've been here.

As for being disappointed in the turnout, yes, of course I am. I was hoping
to give away lots of money and get a lot of people excited about it. I'd be
no less disappointed with a failed product launch.

If I didn't care, why bother doing it in the first place? I did it because I
care and because I wanted to give away lots of money to people and
maybe even run another one of these in a month or so.

But it's obvious that people would rather get into heated discussions
about controversial topics (look at Indiana's thread) than win money.

I learned a lot about marketing from this thread so no, it wasn't all for
nothing and it's not all negative. Just like with a failed product launch, I
know that this sort of thing just doesn't catch on and not to do another
      one.

So I did get something positive out of this.

I mean difficult in that you really wanted us to "guess what kind of music I'm going to write before I write it without any clues to go on" kind of difficult. In other words we would have had to have been psychic to have really had a chance. It wasn't a contest, it was a game of chance.

And yes, to a lot of us controversial topics are a lot more important than winning a few bucks. The controiversial topics are usually about things that are actually going to affect our lives!

Anyway, I was trying to give you some encouragement and you just aren't going to have any of that so all I have to say is thanks for the few minutes of enjoyment I got from listening to your music.

Well Gee, Steve -- you can still give the participants some cash. Always can use a bit extra for Munchie's meds.

I think what tore it for me......I almost didn't get into it either........was because the choices weren't real clear. I'm not an expert on music classification. While I can name some general catagories, getting down to the nitty gritty sub classes that were necessary isn't something that a lot of us can do - so you lost participants that way. It would have been much easier for people to join in if you had listed decisive categories of music (and maybe a link to an example or even just a few song and artist names for example).

So don't feel too hurt - had this been a music forum you would have had people who were educated enough in the field to swamp you. I think that your music knowledge just blindsided your awareness of how little some of the rest of us know.

Sal, I never thought of that. See what musicians and people really into
music take for granted. I mean we do have so many people here who are
way more knowledgeable about music than I am, so I just assumed. But
you made a very good point and your suggestions certainly would have

Exactly why techs have a hard time writing killer how to books. They need to find a newbie, show them how to step by step, breaking down the language of each step until the newbie gets it, then write it at that level.

Ok, what I would have done was list the 3 genres then post the videos and let people match them. I think that would have made it asier but not a giveaway because just as two people can see the same thing but see something different, two people can hear the same thing but hear something different.
This is already evident due to you calling one of your songs heavy metal. I still can't see that.

Kim, for that to work, the 3 songs would have to be very similar but
different enough to make for the sub classes.

      In other words...

If the 3 songs were clearly.

      Jazz
      Rap
      Country

You'd have to be literally tone deaf not to be able to tell the difference
between the 3 so ultimately the first person to post to the thread would
      take all the prizes.

      See the problem with that?

I would have to make the 3 songs similar enough to at least make it
      somewhat of a challenge.

    Steve,
Liked 2nd one best. I'd describe it as very 80's 'new romantic' (well that's what they called it here in the UK!!). I guess you'd call it electronic pop with a dancy beat! Last one I'd called grunge rock (kings of leon stylee). First one was what I'd class as chilled jazz. It's the kind of stuff they play in the background of expensive cocktail and wine bars round here!
Oh and yes fortunately you were wayyyy better than I thought!

    I disagree (of course!)
Take your jazz. You feel its traditional Jazz,so thats your genre and sub genre. The Jazz would probably have been easy for many to guess, but "traditional" jazz? Never in 100 years would I have guessed that.
Drop Dead Blonde. definitely a rock song, but you call it hard rock and I called it pop rock. Again, your correct because it's your song, but the closest it comes to hard rock in my opinion is the cowbell which reminds me of the beginning of Mountain's Missippi Queen. On repeated listening I'd say its the vocals that make it not be hard rock. Don't get me wrong, the vocals aren't bad, but it softens the song.
Rise Of Nations. The first thing that comes to mind in the beginning of the song is a Doobie Brothers kind of sound.
Ironically enough, this is also a good example of what I meant about changing the contest. We both called it power pop.
Anyway, I've done my bet to answer the question you put forth to me:
"Okay, question. What do you think I should have done to make it
easier but not a giveaway? "

Kim, I just want to make sure I follow you.

      I pick 3 songs.

      I then announce the following:

One song is a jazz song, one is a hard rock song and one is a rap song.

Match each song with each description.

Now whether I call it traditional jazz or chilled jazz, certainly anybody
with half an ear can tell the difference between jazz and rap so where
      is the challenge?

Unless I'm just not understanding what you're saying.

I really do want to run another one and give people a chance, but to me,
unless I'm totally misunderstanding you, this is essentially a speed contest
to see who posts first UNLESS I pick 3 songs that are so close in sound
that it would be very difficult to tell the genre's apart unless you really
      knew music inside and out.

      But...

      Jazz
      Rap
      Rock

Who can't tell the difference between those 3 things?

Your right, I think I'm not making myself clear, and in the posting process,I did say what I didn't mean. So, lets start over.
    I have 3 songs.
I post 3 videos of the songs and invite people to guess the genre and sub genre.
Now add in my last post and maybe it will make more sense.
Rise Of Nations we would have agreed on, we both called it power pop.
Drop Dead Blonde We didn't agree on, but its your song, your definition.
A Little Jazz I definitely wouldn't have gotten.
So out of those 3, I got one correct, comparing what I call them to what you call them, and wasn't that the core of the contest?
I apologize for the previous confusing post.
PS: The cowbell also reminds me of Loverboy;Everybodys working for the weekend

      Ah, okay...I get it now.

All right, let me think about it and see what I come up with.

Oh, and I was a big Loverboy fan so they were probably an influence.
