Giving a Free Meal to a Hungry Student Cost This Lunch Lady Her Job

My favorite line in this story: "But Bowden claims that cafeteria workers are told to throw out the child's hot tray, leaving the student embarrassed and with nothing to eat."

Somehow, I just don't feel all Christmasy.

Cheers. - Frank

Yes, red tape can border on stupid sometimes?

Take my local shopping centre, the way out is so dumb now, most ignore it!

It used to be right turn then after about 5 metres, turn right again to go out, more or less.

But now due to some BS red tape OHAS crap, we have to turn left then right then drive about 10 metres then right again, then another 10 metres then right again to finally get back to the same frickin road we could have got to in two quick turns!!!!

I personally ignore it since it is seriously stupid, as most do, (last thing you need before Xmas day is unnecessary BS!

It's such a simple problem to solve - if administrator has any brains, that is.

There are schools where cafeteria workers and/or manager are allowed to grant a free lunch - and document it with the date, student's name/grade and "reason given" for needing the freebie. If certain names show up frequently - parents can be contacted to see if the students needs help.

Let's be real - kids are smart. If they can easily get a free lunch, some will pocket their lunch money. BUT - no kid should go without food...period.

I've always thought school lunches should be part of the cost of education - that every student should eat lunch without jumping through hoops of 'who pays'. Eliminating the bureaucracy that is paid to oversee "free lunch programs" would pay for a lot of lunches.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

Most positive thing about the internet. Few decades back you could do these things and get away with it. Now you are just begging for a PR nightmare and you'll get it 90% of the time.

It's nice when public outcry can reclaim justice, but you're right about ensuring it doesn't disable legitimate and properly used authority. Yours is an insight many don't look far enough ahead to realize there could be a future problem with it. Kudos.

There's already problems with it or this wouldn't have happened. What we need is for the federal government to get their damned noses out of areas that weren't meant to be fed issues. This is a problem of centralized power - relentlessly throughout human history. I'm pretty confident that states would deal with the situation in their own states much better than the feds could ever even imagine.

Right. Like Michigan fighting to get the EPA off it's back and then poisoning children with lead in their drinking water - and choosing to do nothing about it?

Sorry. I luvs me my EPA and I don't trust my elected state officials to do anything to protect me. I'll pass on that one.

This is the thing right here. Just fire every single person in the free lunch program hierarchy, and spend the money on food.

Theft of school property... Wow, I'm sure the parents would of paid the $1.70 to, that's just stupid. Just say that the school board doesn't offer sufficient training on how to deal with moral dilemmas.

Silly Butters, don't you see? School boards and morals are mutually exclusive.

I learned something today. Actually I didn't. But I wanted to say it anyway in the "Spirit of Christmas".

        Actually I do.

Kurt may be mean spirited, crass, vulgar, rigid in his thinking, condescending, major Jerk............but............

    I didn't read it.

But my thought is, pretty much everybody thinks they are doing the right thing. We don't see it, but they do. At one point there was probably a serious discussion, where "throwing out the food" was considered the best idea. I don't see how, but it's something to keep in mind.

If it makes you feel better Frank, I never feel Christmasy. Not even after I read a really uplifting story.
