Are You Working Today?

That's a question that I saw posted in a group that I'm a member of over on Facebook that caused me to pause and reflect.

The question partially, by it's very nature, suggests that anyone who works on New Years Day must be a bit of a workaholic, and should therefore be ashamed.

Many will interpret that question as, "Are you one of those poor miserable creatures who never gets to take time off and enjoy life and time with family and friends.

I've even had friends post private messages to me say, "You never shut down... always working!"

They are partly correct, but that's also partly because I'm just a type-A personality :-)

I DID work today, and have probably done at least some type of work every day since I started my online business nearly 20 years ago.

The difference is that I literally DO view my work as fun, and not as some drudgery.

I do what I do because I gain satisfaction from it, honestly believe that it helps a lot of people, and know that it affords my family and I, and a lot of others, a life that we couldn't have if I were in most other jobs.

Here's the thing...

Many of my friends will spend HOURS hanging out on social media, chit-chatting with friends, enjoying themselves, yet feeling that they really should be getting some much needed work DONE.

They live lives of quiet desperation, and unhappiness.

I look forward to getting to work everyday, and RARELY shut down. Many would consider that second point sad, but when your work is your passion, you perhaps fall asleep wrestling with some challenge, and while you are asleep, your subconscious mind works on it (and comes up with the solution), and when you first get up, you are ready to record that answer before you forget.

I too spend HOURS some day on social media, and I do consider this forum a form of social media.

However, while I appear to be just wasting time, I am researching, setting up projects or joint ventures via private message, indirectly link building, and just getting to know my customers (and letting them get to know me).

When I post pictures to Facebook, it's not just because I think that they are cute, it's because I have learned how to use those pictures as a part of my sales message.

For example, I've posted pictures of my travels to many different countries, of me on half-a-dozen cruises, of hanging out with friend at conferences, and of just hanging out in some fairly exotic places.

Sharing ALL of those pictures is MARKETING to me. It's sharing the message that the laptop lifestyle is real, that when you network more you do create greater success, and even that life doesn't have to be all drudgery.

It conveys the message that even if I'm not 100% aware of the causes of my success, success is there, and that merits watching... and that is marketing/working :-)

So, I'll ask you, "Are you working today?"

... and a second question, "Are you enjoying it?"

Willie

That is the beauty about marketing because it's so fluid that basically anything can be used to directly or indirectly promote your business. This allows people to come up with very creative marketing strategies that work extremely well. I am also liking what I do and my only regret is not starting sooner. Thank you for your post sir. Happy New Years!

So, I'll ask you, "Are you working today?"
I am. There are tasks that need doing.

There was a turkey farm down the road from where I grew up. People would always comment on their working on holidays. The owner once told me, "Those birds don't know it's Christmas."

... and a second question, "Are you enjoying it?"
Work ain't work when you're having fun! I freakin' "love" it! IM is my social media/video game all rolled into one.

I did my volunteer hours at the animal foundation yesterday and today, too. The dogs need walking and cats need petting even on a holiday.

Now that I live closer to family for the first time in 20 years I plan my work around holidays and family schedules. Of course, that's after working straight through the holidays for many years.

Me too. I've always got to be doing some kind of work. I don't think I could ever retire.

I couldn't stay the whole day with my family at Christmas. I went to my parents house and opened presents and ate dinner but after a few hours of hanging out there with family I told everyone that I'm gonna be leaving now and getting back to working on something.

I didn't have a job to get back too but I wanted to find something to do at my house.

I can't just sit around all day. I have to keep busy.

I hope that I don't end up working that many hours today, but I have some fairly ambitious goals just for the month of January, and they are not going to fulfill themselves. I do plan on putting in more hours early in the year and less hours when the fishing and boating season rolls around... when I plan on living mostly on the water or at least on a beach!

          Hi Randall,

Yes, that's correct. I took a 1/2 day off for Christmas and I'll take a 1/2 day off for my birthday on Jan 6th (that's not a joke).

Those are my work hours 7 days a week.

I train at the gym or do cardio for 1 hour 6 days a week. I train in martial arts 30 min 3 times per week. I read for 30 min per day every day as well. I sleep 6 hours per night to be sure I'm good in that dept.

It's pretty easy when you are driven beyond belief to accomplish your goals.

The reason is that I have 3 businesses. My wife, daughter and I are planning on traveling full time within the next year. Mostly Europe and Asia. Then we are looking at paying cash for a decent house in that 1 to 2 mil range in Budapest after we travel for 18 months. Love that city.

So, no worries, I felt no loss of respect for your question at all.

          What are you working for?

That's the real question we need to ask ourselves isn't it?

I took the day off on New Years Day, but I have been working from 5am on a Sunday which is perhaps more questionable. I consumed a rather charming sausage casserole for breakfast. Some won't like this concept (some will rage considerably), but it just defines brilliantly the allegorical dish of the day. Some will have a taste for it, others don't.

Once upon a time in my locality people would drink in their masses and drink masses of drink on New Years Eve and the next day would see many a person dead to the world and the world dead to them.

Now, however, people are out and about with their families going for meals and drinks out flocking to pubs and restaurants. Likewise, I imagine people to be equally as active with their minds fresh for work.

Ye old 'If you are working on new years day, you didn't drink enough' is but a saying of the past, if indeed that were ever said.

EDIT: It's not even Sunday. Calendar bearings are lost entirely. Bring on normality.

    I am with that ethos.

Enthisiasm married to aptitude gonna spark us all along some.

But I am also aware of burnout.

I do not want a focus so all-consumin' that it burns up my life force only to serve itself.

Plus also, I do not take kindly to bumpin' into stuff while zoomin' around in a blitzo trance.

So I figure you gotta skinny dip in the pool of goofo sometimes, lose all focus and fizzy out on undirected speculation.

It is a cool way to make naive links an' touch on seemin' unessentials, an' I guess the point is, when you are shootin' at targets an gettin' all focussed an' drilled down an' directed, you gotta actively generate a broad outlook or you jus' gonna hit the same target evry time.

Mosta my best stuff happens when I am not actually doin' anythin'.

It is vomit of subconscious, as you say, an' I cut her time a lotta slack cos she always delivers.

      I consider myself pretty lazy.
Today, I spent about 3 hours writing my next book, and will spend a few hours reading a necessary book on marketing....to review, which then brings me more buyers.

150 years ago? When we were farmers? pioneers? What did we do besides work?

I think that this leisure time is a newer phenomenon. Vacations? How many people took vacations 100 years ago?

I consider myself lazy, because I don't do hard physical work. I own a store. When a customer asks, "Are you working hard?"..I sometimes say, "Are you kidding? I stand around all day, talking to nice people that give me money. The only way it could be easier, is if I were laying down".

      It's not a bad life.

By the way......Immensely well written post, Mr. Crawford.

But it is weird cos a related post is doin' the rounds on Mind Warriors right now.

        ...I concur with that sentiment.

I guess my point is that I am a believer in Bohemian frippery as a force for meaningful gestation.

Not alla the time, an' not for the Canadian mounted police, but I figure you gotta have plenty slooshy blendo space interspersed between the whipcracks.

So I am equally against the 24/7 workaholic ethos an' the (increasingly evident) 'Earn $1m per Second Just For Bein' Maedea Molecules' mentality.

I work, but then I wanna go do stuff.

Like with evryone, my subconscious hits on solutions to problems I feed it, but I kinda wanna be around more when it happens, an' that requires reflection.

(Bad timin' on the new doobie avatar earlier today, I know: jus' bein' playful.)

Seein' as we are OK with scrotal input, can I make a potentially lewd analogy?

        Think of cummin'.

You wanna be asleep on the job?

It happens, and you are momentarily vacant?

I figure most people wanna be there when it all fires off, especially if ur datin' a chemist with a handkerchief fetish.

Way I see it, there is cool stuff goes on durin' the creative process, an' that is an O I wanna see.

So I make time for it, make sure it ain't smothered out by overenthusiastic finalities.

Too much fixin' blitzes the fluxin'.

But, yeah — as long as you don't lose sight of the Canadian mounted police an' go drift off in a dream.

(Gonna switch my avatar to mebbe goggles or a snorkel tomorrow cos I figure people might not take me seriously with dooberal collateral iconography bustin' outta my face.)
