In this video we meet Mailyne, a single mom who has adopted a zero waste lifestyle for almost 1 year to reduce the amount of garbage she sends to landfills and to be part of a sustainable future.

At the grocery store, she uses cloth bags, mason jars, and pillow cases to buy bulk food, produce and bread. She makes all of her personal care products, including toothpaste, deodorant and mouthwash, with the help of a friend. She also uses a safety razor and menstrual cup to avoid buying disposables.

Buying used clothing and toys is her first choice and if she does have to purchase something new, she tries to source items that are sold or shipped without non-recyclable packaging.

Her apartment building does not currently have a compost collection service but she doesn't let that stop her. She brings her bucket to friends places or to her parents house while she waits for a more convenient solution to become available.

A couple of innovative zero waste solutions that she introduced us to included a binchotan charcoal water filter (it's like a Brita filter without the plastic) and compostable bamboo toothbrushes.

You can follow her zero waste adventures on her blog here:

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

That doesn't surprise anyone. The male of the species often gets sidetracked when they smell blood.

Wow - this woman is awesome. I only am partly sustainable, and it's a lot of work in some ways. Making your own care products is time consuming (I know that first hand), and in some regions getting stuff to a recycler is a pain in the patoot. Resourcing goods takes some imagination and some work a lot of times, too. She really deserves a lot of credit.

Well, it is nice that she can do this. I WOULD gladly do what she does with bulk stuff, and thought about it LONG ago, but the idea of how many handle things in stores, etc.... turned me off the idea. Look at what is happening with chipotle! And I mentioned the SAME sort of thing about firehouse subs.

STILL, it is a great video and she boiled it down to some VALID SUSTAINABLE methods.

And HEY, Blood is another thing that can decompose. Some plants would LOVE the extra iron.

Well, if you think about it, the over population, and central city plan makes a lot of stuff virtually IMPOSSIBLE! The ONLY reason such a situation can exist is because the relative few that CAN do a given task make FAR more than they need, and accept a common item for barter to have a nation wide or even international distribution network. So yeah, we can eat chicken because someone ELSE got too much, and can only get pants because people got far too much fabric and made enough for us, etc.....

Kind of ironic that people feel we need to save SO much because SO many waste so much, but that SAME dynamic FORCES waste!
