And it contains the cigarette smoking man. I swear I saw him in a cave and blown to bits by a missile in one of the movies.

The actor who plays him, William B Davis is 78 and married to an attractive, much younger woman. He has not smoked for 20 years, apparently he smoked mostly herbal cigarettes in the series.

If you're DVR'ing the show, make sure you extend your recording time to account for a possible overrun of the Panthers/Cards game.

Just watched it, good as it ever was. And it's all true. Another one tomorrow.

      Smoking through his neck, priceless.

      And yes, late start.

I am surprised you guys liked it. I thought it was all over the place, forced, with too much exposition.

Like Carter forgot how to write.

NY Times review right after got it spot on.

It was interesting, and I'll watch more tonight. I was ready to treat it like "just another X-Files episode," but the way it was constructed that was impossible.

First Scully is hugely skeptical, then she's suddenly an instant convert? Nahh.

I know Carter has a lot of ground to cover and only a handful of episodes to do it in, but the political heavy-handedness (Alex Jones, anyone?) was over the top and the "Oh, it's the government!" explanation was on us way too quick. I was surprised he didn't work "Jade Helm" in there somewhere.

Anybody remember Space: Above and Beyond?

Great show...and suddenly the producers were told it was being cancelled. So they rushed the resolution into two episodes and covered ground that literally should have taken seasons to cross.

That's what I feel happened here.

And if you weren't around or a fan two decades ago...heaven help you in following this stuff.

It's even harder to swallow when you consider the entire series. How many times has she been kidnapped by monsters?

Episode 2 was better. More "Monster of the Week" and back to the roots. Though I realize they did have to have a reason to reopen the X-Files.

Still somewhat rushed, but better showing rather than telling.

It was good stuff. Just a new series after a long break, except they all look older. It still has that intriguing something that makes you want more.

We must forget that bleak diversion where Nigel Patrick (the liquid metal cop from Terminator 2) and some woman took over from the terrific duo. That never happened, ok.

Robert Patrick. Stop trying to make everyone English, damn it.

As for the show, I expected better. We're a third of the way through and it feels like a rambling mess. With only six episodes, the story needs to be tighter.

I thought I may have got his first name wrong. That's also a fair comment on making the story/narrative tighter, room for improvement. Content and ideas were still good though, intrigue was there.

What surprised me though, it was shown a 7 pm, real gory, bloody to be on at that time. What fascinates me about US mainstream tv is they show that, but a bare boobie now and then, ooohhh no. Uk TV is much looser on that, though usually after 9 pm.

I was surprised to see the show on at 8 and I agree with you about the boobs versus blood issue.

I'm not sure I agree with you about the intrigue, though. I'm not even sure I know what I'm supposed to be intrigued about, specifically, other than the standard X Files themes.

Regardless, I'll watch the full six episode season, but, at this point, it feels like a simple money grab to me.

I think there is a bit of the Star Wars aspect here, hugely popular when it came out and rebooted but looking same feel and familiar. Thing is, done before, been there, seen that, what's next?. it's a longevity issue, not new anymore, loads of old fans who lap it up still but the younger generation like the new stuff. Avengers, Spiderman etc..

At least the X files has the capability if it plays it's cards right (not at the moment) of exploring lots of different stuff if it wants too, Like the new view that the human governments are doing all the abductions having gained the alien technology, a twist of sorts.

Star Trek is another example, lasted a long time but running out of steam a bit. Far future Star Trek was hinted at on tv and in the recent films that they can go backwards and forwards in time, a lot of fun could be had there. Time Trek.

Well, we're only one episode away from the end, and I don't think I've been so disappointed by a TV show ever.

The first two episodes moved along quite nicely once you suspended your disbelief.

I thought that having the two kids disappear the rest of the series would follow that story arc to whatever conclusion.

From Episode 3 onwards they've abandoned that story and gone back to "monster of the week" stories. These were always the weakest link in the original X Files. Episode 3 with its twist on the man bites animal, animal turns into man during a full moon was silly beyond belief. South Park could've done something with it, but XF missed the boat completely.

I've seen Episode 4 twice now and still can't figure out what the point was. Episode 5 with Mulder "tripping" was again, too silly for words.

I really hope they end with some sort of return to the story of the first and second episodes otherwise it will be an opportunity missed and certainly not a justification for resurrecting the show.

"Monster Of The Week" was the original idea.

However, I quit watching. Episode 4 was so dull I turned it off.
