Who does this silly stuff?

I notice the "outrageous" ads that appear on so many sites - such as "20 stars that gained weight" or "look what plastic surgery did to these stars".

I ignore them - until today when I clicked a couple. How stupid is this stuff? The absolute craziest was "what happened to Brigette Bardot's looks"? Seriously - time happened, dude... the woman is in her 80's. I don't care how famous you are, mean old Mr Gravity wins in the end.

Don't care who you are - if you put a photo of you at 18 next to a photo of you taken 40-60 years later....going to be a big difference.

These ads seems to be the online equivalent of "The Enquirer" and other rag mags that used to grace checkout counters. Why are these ads so prevalent? I must be dense but I don't get it except it must be people get bored and click on ads instead of more stupid photos???

People love trivia, gossip, are fascinated by it. The top ten of this and that or top ten reasons etc have huge click through rates. Then the sites just serve ads alongside them to make a buck.

Let's face it, when we look through these, we don't know who half of the celebrities are anyway.

Those pages take SO long to load that they're unbearable, but a lot of people click all the way through the slideshows.

I can almost guarantee that they're getting paid per ad impression for most of the ads.

Yup. Even if you see the same ad over and over again, on each page, that counts as an impression.

These sites are there for one reason, to sell ad space. The reason each photo is on another page, is because Google ranks websites partly on how much time is spent on the site, and how many pages are clicked. Each page takes so long to load, because each page has a different set of ads.

Celebrity photos always get the most clicks.

Exactly, and that is why I changed your bio from "The Claude Whitacre Story" to "100 Things About Claude Whitacre He Never Thought I Knew"

I wont need a publisher as I know you will pay up once I send you a copy of the manuscript.

Yeah, anymore I refuse to view these one page slideshows that take forever to load. It may be advantageous in some regards to these advertisers but it is turning a lot of people off.

I used to view a lot of these interesting articles...and it's just not celebrity stuff. Interesting things like Unique Houses from unique locations, scientific things etc..etc..but now with this one page deal I do not fool with it

The first part in regard to google is widely claimed but never been verified. The second part is very unlikely and almost impossible. Google could only use chrome to determine how many links you clicked on a site and as a metric that would be a huge waste of data storage and processing.

The reason each photo is loaded on another page is for ad reasons - more impressions...more advertising revenue

I've seen it used as a list building method as well. A big button saying "show all entries on one page" but when you click it, you have to give your email address for it to work. Ugh.

...and for the other 87% of the web, Google will use Google Fonts for analytics just like they're doing with this forum thread page.

SEO is all about the details.

Check out the data on the most popular Google Font. They're showing 24,777,566,545 font views for a single week. That's only one Google Font out of 708 available fonts.

The Open Sans Google Font is also the default font for Wordpress & even If you change the default font on WP it's still the default font for the same WP install on the WP admin login/option pages.

My point here with the fonts is Google obviously has analytics hooked up to their fonts & I have no doubts Google only created Google Fonts for collecting traffic data.

Because they are making someone money thru simple supply and demand and current Market conditions... doesn't take a Brain Scientist or Rocket Surgeon to understand that.

Which is why I won't visit some sites, no matter how interesting they make their content seem in their advertising. Answers(dot)com is one site that advertises on Facebook a lot, and I absolutely will not go to that site again.

    Clickbait. It's a thing.

On the one hand, it's plumbing the depths of the human experience.

On the other hand, it's giving us a pretty good map of those depths in the process.

      One font, one week...

If that's an average week that one font is generating 1.29 trillion impressions a year.
