I can't seem to get anything done anymore.

I always want to be on youtube, on my phone, in some other drama, but never focused.

Too many things sabotaging my focus.

Anyone feeling sorry for me yet?

In the words of Hotel Transylvania 2..."blah de blah blah"...

No sympathy yet - I don't think you have focused enough of your attention on yourself to qualify for "poor me"....

What I want, what I like, what I see, what I think, what I don't like, what entertains me, my interests, me feelings, how it affects me, my life, my, my, my, me, me, me...you aren't quite there yet but the if the guy in the article throws a pity party, someone might show up....

      Zodiax,

I have the SAME problems! When I was younger, I had lots of OTHER things taking my time. SO WHAT! I see commercials about helping whoever and they speak of potential. YEAH RIGHT! The same has been true for SOOOOOOOOO long! Let's start talking more about REALIZING potential, rather than having it. After all, EVERY seed has the POTENTIAL to become a veritable FOREST of seeds, but most die or are destroyed.

One thing about ME, I understood all the problems with printing, for example, and have admired people like gutenburg. Without movable type, books would have been FAR rarer and more expensive. Even with computers. I saw the earlier things, and many later things, and haven't been like the kids on "kids react" that say HOW ANTIQUATED, etc....

AND, though people in my generation, and earlier, didn't have so many things like youtube vying for our time, we had other things. And I STILL remember having to search for an unusual item, or even try to get a book, and TODAY you can do SOOOOO much in a few minutes on the computer. The ODD thing is that people are STILL trying to get rid of home computers! I saw one video that seemed to imply that Windows 10 was even a step towards doing it. IRONICALLY, if they achieved that goal, most wouldn't notice, and some may even welcome it. Personally, I would hate it, and even marvel at how a step backward could be considered a step forward. And WHY would some not even notice? SIMPLE! Because the few things they DO do with computers, like watch youtube, would be things that either were ALWAYS on the web, or could be seemingly seamlessly MOVED to it, like M/S has done with office to a degree.

OH, and don't get me started with TV! I heard many speak of its POTENTIAL as a TEACHER! MOST of the stuff has been DRECK! People in MY generation, and my parent's generation, spent a LOT of time watching TV. BEFORE THAT, and for part of my parent's generation, it was RADIO! And MOST has been DRECK, or TWADDLE!

P.S. HOW ABOUT THAT! Twaddle sounds more british, than american, and yet the spellcheck says twaddle is OK, but dreck is misspelled!

    I know!

But I am biased toward this generation because there are MORE things than ever before.

I don't think any sane person could deny that fact!

Someone I know posted on fb today that she couldn't believe little kids do nothing but play on computers all day.
She didn't like it when I reminded her she was a mother of two little kids who play on computers all day.

They said the same thing about Claude's generation. The bell bottoms and sleeping until noon after a hard night of partying to Saturday Night Fever and KC and the Sunshine Band.

Same with my generation in the 80s wasting my time being lazy playing Pac Man for hours on end.

The older generation will always tell the younger generation how lazy they are and how easy they have it.'
        Always have and always will.

  • I got no problem with multiple inputs cos I was kinda raised on 'em.

Like Disco said, each generation quickly absorbs new stuff an' transforms it into the norm.

I love alla those wartime images of families sittin' round a radio the size of a frickin' elephant.

Then, later, you got TV, games, that kinda stuff.

But I do sympathise withya, Zodester.

There is so much stuff goin' on right now that it is easy to be distracted.

Why, I am procrastinatin' here even as I type, wastin' precious workin' time by idlin' my brain away on fripperies.

    Or am I?

Thing about TV, radio an' games is how they were kinda spectator sports.

People's role in the relationship twixt soul an' box was that of the passive consoomer.

What is savin' us right now in the digital age is the interactive factor.

Multiple inputs got mutual feedback, so the IN responds instantly to the OUT, an' it is not simply a case of beholdin' some fixed media playin' out its pre-defined narrative.

    Oh seriously?

Am I the only one in the US who doesn't think you have to answer a phone just because it makes noise? Anyone ever think of leaving their phone at home when they leave the house - or not buying one for their kids? What does a kid do that doesn't carry a phone around everywhere? For one thing, they don't walk out in front of moving cars.

When my group goes on rock hunting excursions, their kids aren't allowed to have phones with them. We hunt rocks - we talk, we tell stories at the campfire. The kids have a freakin' riot being disconnected. They can hardly wait for their fairy rock godmother (as many of my site members kids call me) takes them all out to play in the wild. It's really that simple to retrigger their sense of being human and get them to focus on one thing at a time.

Kids are lazy because they are allowed to sit on their *sses long enough at one time that their hormones just don't kick in like they're supposed to. Give em a dog to walk or someplace to walk to in order to get an errand done and get their metabolisms working like they're supposed to. Take the phone away and make them talk to people face to face. Shut off the computer for a mandatory amount of time each day - or only turn it on for a certain amount of time. That one is no different from only being allowed to watch TV an hour a day just the way our parents restricted us when we were kids. Mandatory outdoors for xx amount of time every day depending on weather.

If our kids are screwed up it's because we're allowing them to get that way. If an adult is that screwed up - well, I don't bleed for anyone over 21 that is too screwed up to do what they know they should or need to be doing to focus on something important to them.

This subject just drives me batshyte. Can ya tell?

It is because of the technology I guess. People now like to play game on their computer/mobile phone rather than going outside and play with their friends and there are several new innovations in various fields that has restricted us to do most of the work ourselves, we rather have machines, robots to do the hard work for us

So what you're saying is Generation X is extra lazy?

I've heard some poo-poo that away, saying they are extremely intelligent, unusually smart because they themselves wouldn't have been able to understand all of this technology when they were young.

I thought about this and I have to disagree. You see, my thinking is that if you were super intelligent, you'd be intelligent enough to know that being outside in the fresh air is good for your health and that eating junk food is bad for your health and that exercise and eating properly combats obesity.

And yet, we have more obesity than ever before in our population, including the up and coming generation.

Yep! You're lazy and you aren't as smart as y'all think you are.

I remember my mom use to shut off the modemn as a kid while I was playing runescape or some other time-wasting pastime.

I would try to sneek back into her room in order to turn it back on and get caught most of the time.

That would extend the time the modem was turned off.

Nobody has to tell you how well my grades were.

Now if someone were to disconnect my modem I'd throw an adult temper tantrum.

Well then, perhaps there is a huge gap between knowing and doing them then.

Blaming YouTube, your phone, forums, etc. is simply a way of the displacing responsibility for success with an excuse for failure.

Here's the deal in a nutshell: When your desire to succeed is stronger than your desire for being entertained, you will start making progress toward success. Persistence will ensure you get there. Falling back into bad habits will perpetuate your current state. It's cause and effect.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step toward obtaining different results. You've done that. What are you going to do now that you've taken that first step? Will you shrink back, or step out into a brave new world? Which do you want more, success...or endless distractions?
