Have you ever seen a mermaid?

There are "dozens" of people in Israel who think they have.

        Hey Thom,

I don't know how someone could confuse a manatee with a girl + tail.

Maybe on a dark night after a few beers or a very long ocean voyage.

Well after a few months on a boat drinking rum, I can see how the Manatee could look pretty damn good

I saw a mermaid at a boat show I was dragged to years ago. Seemed quite nice - smiled a lot, spoke English, had great hair. Contary to myths, she remained in "mermaid form" even out of the water (perched in the back of some cabin cruiser - apparently that is the preferred hang-out location for mermaids).

She had no problem breathing out of water either. No sign of gills.

I wasn't the only one to see the mermaid either - thousands saw her, and didn't think it was that wild. Many didn't look twice. I don't know what the big deal is with this particular story - seems to me mermaids aren't that rare after all, if they hang out at boat shows.

Her tail seemed a bit plastic-y or rubbery, rather than scaly, but I guess that was a problem with my expectations...

          Best Regards, Georgetta

    I believe, I believe!

I've always had a thing for the merpeople, and still collect paintings of them. They are one of those things that if they don't exist they really should. I mean, c'mon!!

Here's an interesting snippet about the Benbecula mermaid, and the description doesn't leave much room for doubt that it wasn't a deformed fish....

    "...
But a much more celebrated episode occurred in 1830 on the small island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides. A farmwoman cutting seaweed on the shore, was startled to see a few feet from her the fish-like form of "a woman in miniature" happily turning somersaults. Several men failed to capture the creature as she splashed away, but a boy struck her in the back with a rock. Days later, the mermaid's dead body washed ashore. The dainty corpse attracted a large crowd. A careful examination was performed and documented by local officials. Everyone agreed that this was a mermaid and therefore partly human. As a result, there was a complete burial in a shroud and a coffin made by order of the chief magistrate of the island.

The detailed examination of "The Mermaid of Benbecula" was published solemnly in 1900 by the distinguished Gaelic scholar, Alexander Carmichael. It reveals that the upper part of the creature was "about the size of a well-fed child of three or four years of age, with an abnormally developed breast. The hair was long. dark and glossy, while the skin was white, soft, and tender. The lower part of the body was like a salmon, but without the scales."

Throughout the 19th century, on both sides of the Atlantic, numerous fake mermaids were exhibited, including the one owned by P. T. Barnum. On a visit to Japan in the 1850's, Andrew Steinmetz discovered that fishermen there made these curios, in a kind of cottage industry, from the corpses of monkeys and large fish....."

No, I do not believe in mermaids. Assuming that mermaids are part human (or humanoid), that would lead one to think they would be social animals. In that case, it's most likely they would have been discovered by reputable scientists/biologists by now.

However, I also believe there are still some fantastic animals yet to be discovered. And the bulk of those animals are probabaly going to be from the vastly unexplored oceans of the world.

    All the best,
    Michael
