Kia has ranked #1 in JD Power 2016 initial quality study. The first time in 27 years a non premium brand has ranked number one. What is your opinion of Kia?

My neighbor has this one in dark brown...

They like and it and it looks sharp enough for the money. My brother bought a Kia several years ago and as far as I know it was a good car.

Years ago I had narrowed a new Kia down to the final three during one of our car purchases but did not pull the trigger on it.

    Cheers

    That's funny, KIA #1.

I know someone that had a new KIA and the front passenger wheel always had alignment problems, ate tires like crazy. It was in the shop more than it was on the road.

Note to self, never buy a KIA.

Kia at number one does seem a bit strange, but even last year Consumer Reports was rating Kia above the American made cars.

There's a KIA dealer in this neck of the woods, famous for running sales stunts like giving away big screen TVs, cruise tickets, even a house one time. During the NCAA BB tourney, he ran a half-court shot contest - make the shot, get the car for free.

About all I can remember of the ads, besides the stunts, is him sticking his face in the camera and yelling "It's gonna be HUUUUUGGGGGE!"

If someone is goin' there, I may be in for a ticket or two.

Your story reminded me of a guy I used to do battle with when I was running TV and appliance stores. Not sure if he had a Kia dealership or not, all I know is the regional powerhouse American TV is no more.

His favorite giveaway was bicycles. Buy a TV, get a free bike.

"It was the most successful," Mattioli said. "Over 100,000 bikes over the course of the years. It was just one innovation. It was, 'Just try it.' We did all kinds of crazy things."

This dude would pull all the stunts including throwing refrigerators off buildings etc.

I was out for a ride in the mountains Saturday afternoon (that's my bike in the background). Short version of a long story is that a pickup truck veered over the centerline and hit this Kia head on.

Incredibly, to me, the two people in the Kia sustained relatively minor injuries. They were flown out by helicopter but only because it would have taken an ambulance 90 minutes to get there.

Maybe all modern cars are engineered like this, I don't know, but in the 80s and before NO ONE would have come away alive from a wreck like this.

That's common on all newer cars in the US. It actually has a name, crumple zone. New cars are designed for the front end to absorb impact.

It's surprising the front tires didn't blow out in your photo considering how far back the engine compartment was pushed.

Watch the video below, it's really impressive how auto manufactures have advanced in safety. The driver in the 1959 car was obliterated while the 2009 car didn't show much interior damage (considering the impact).

Unfortunately, many of the Mattioli commercials appear to be down.

This one shows Mattioli sitting, er, skiing, in a recliner on Lake Mendota.

This one shows stereos, dryers and microwaves getting blown up as part of a 4th of July sale.

And this one shows Mattioli water skiing on a mattress on Lake Mendota.
    You get the picture though...

When he opened his store in Rockford on Grand Opening day I almost had one of his big shots arrested for assault on one of my salesmen. 5 or 6 squads out front of American TV on the big Grand Opening day, now that was some funny shi*

    Still LMAO...

Well this is definitely food for thought!

We have a local Kia dealer offering 1k and a paid vacation. I have a car to turn in too and was holding out for a honda civic but this might incentivize me to at least go for a test drive Wanted to check out a plot of land in the area and get some key lime pie while I was at it.

    Bottom line....

Kia is not the "old" Kia....

Since their "association" with Hyundai, they have improved their quality drastically.... Check out How Korean car makers beat out the Japanese

When I bought a new small SUV in 2006, I bought a Hyundai Tuscon Limited... It had a better safety rating and much longer warranty than its competitors.... I never regretting that decision for a moment.

The funny thing is Hyundais and Kias are "more American" than some Fords and Lincolns...

The Ford Taurus was made in Canada for years.....

The some Lincolns are made in Mexico and Canada.....

The "dirty little secret" is the "American" cars have been made with parts made outside the USA, assembled in plants outside the USA... and sold as "American cars" for years....

I remember seeing an Article titled "What is an American car?" where they compared the various models.... a "Japanese" car turned out to have the most money paid to companies and workers here in the US of A.

Here's another informative article..... Is Your Car Made in America?

People drive off the lot thinking they're "supporting" American workers.... It makes me wonder how many people would buy these "American" cars if they knew where their money was really going....

Reminds me of an argument I had with one "good ol' boy" who was giving me static for driving a Mazda pickup. He kept asking me why I wouldn't buy an American car.

I asked him if I should have bought the Ford made in Canada, the Chevy made in Mexico, or the Mazda built in Kentucky?

I wonder if he still has that "dazed and confused" look over a decade later...

I'm pretty sure he is still "dazed and confused."

Like 99% of Americans, he never actually researched the "origin" of the vehicle he was purchasing.... They simply believe the "nameplate" indicates where all the parts come from and where all the assembly was performed.

I know many Americans would buy a Hyundai made in Alabama instead of a Ford made in Canada... if they knew where their money was really going.

When you really dig in, Hyundai has a few really cool vehicles...

The Hyundai Ioniq with its three options of Electric, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid looks interesting... Their inventive use of sugar cane, volcanic stone and recycled plastics makes it attractive to the "eco-friendly" crowd.

The Hyundai Genesis starts at $38,750... The 5.0 R Spec was a real head turner...

Those looking for "extreme luxury" should check out the highly rated Hyundai Equus starting at only $61,500 with concierge service.
