How could age possibly make a difference? Most everything online is done anonymously. Nobody is going to ask you about your age.

If anything, being older often means you have a greater depth of experience, understanding, and perspective which can come in handy whenever you write or enter into conversations with others in your niche.

Yeah, I second this emotion.

There's no way at all age plays a role in IM. There's just as much opportunity out there for everyone regardless how old they are.

Make it a point to surround yourself with those who will give you positive reinforcement, and ditch those that let negativity creep in.

I also agree that most of the time it absolutely doesn't matter. That's awesome because older people but also younger (i.e. we have people under 20 running successful online businesses) get the same opportunity. Few areas are little bit influenced by the age. For example YouTube and vlogging.

Absolutely NOT!!! Age has NOTHING to do with anyone's online success. The problem is that we live in an age conscious culture that throws out anyone over 29. It's ridiculous though it's very easy to get sucked into this. It's best to live by your own core beliefs and philosophy and ditch the worlds philosophy because it will inevitably pull you under time and time again if you let it.

Age should not be an issue, I always tell that to anyone wanting to start a business online however you need to learn some

You didn't actually say what the statement was that you found discouraging. We can infer from your question that this "mentor" said something to the effect that you're too old for Internet marketing. Of course, you may have misinterpreted the meaning, so that inference might be wrong.

Assuming you were told you were too old for IM...

You're 54 years old and you still don't recognize that such a statement is a poorly conceived opinion rather than a fact? So here's a suggestion: before giving any credence to statements that are discouraging and to people who do not support your goals, stop and think about what was said. Ask yourself questions like:

Is the statement fact or opinion?
Could this person be wrong?
Does this person know me well enough to make judgments about my abilities and will to succeed? (Even if you think they do, they could be wrong.)

In other words, use logic and reason, and a little research if need be, to help validate or disprove what was said. You'll only go as far as your mind will take you, so be careful of what you feed it and even more careful of what you keep and internalize. From my perspective, this "mentor" is not someone you want to let occupy much of your brain space.

LOL! Now that made my day! I am 61 years old now and just starting to get interested in this whole IM thing. I have been lurking this forum for a while now trying to learn and little and absorb some knowledge.

I hope age doesn't matter because then I guess I'm screwed too!!

Dennis; I'm sorry to hear that, because I think I know it all.

Actually, I knew it all at 45 years old, but at 61 years old, I've forgotten about 37% of "it all". So, truthfully, I probably now know 63% of it all. But I still believe that I know it all, so in truth, I'm simply lowering my estimation of what "It all" encompass.

Unless we find out more about IM, and then I may know as little as 26% of it all. But I still think I know it all, so I feel pretty good about myself, in my delusion.

It's on a sliding scale...unfortunately, it always slides downward at my age. At this rate, I'm losing about 2% a year of it all, so at retirement age, I'll probably still know 52% of it all.

I just wanted to clear that up.

Well, I would consider myself pretty smart if I can learn half of what everyone around here knows about IM!

I have done a little affiliate marketing in the past but I did not get very far. The reasons are long and boring but I did find out it takes a lot of time and dedication and I was just too busy with life and other things to give it the time it needed.

This is only because l am creative, and whittled website creation, building a list, blah, blah, down to several, (have their own traffic options).

But l do agree with others here, age is irrelevant, it is dogged determination, the ability to ignore your friends and familys rantings, watching some or all of your friends leaving, and persisting regardless of time frames, and effort.

I think that Frank Kern wrapped it up by saying,....

"Most of the things you try online, won't work, but 2% will, and it is that 2%, that can change your life, in a dramatic way!"

Makes no different at all. "Internet Marketing" = Using the internet to market something.

You start with learning the basic things about the internet then learn how to implement that. then find a way to monetize that.

Many times being "older" can actually be a good thing. I don't know why however I'm reminded of the following Sales Page: Stop Your Divorce! By Homer McDonald. It wouldn't have the same impact with a person younger.

In any case - with any market - you will be compensated by the value that your provide to your market. (And that has nothing to do with your age,)

Obviously he/she isn't really old enough to be a mentor.

You should be looking for someone who has enough years behind them to have tried a number of different approaches and failed enough to understand not only what works and what doesn't... but why.

I think we've made it pretty clear that age is not one of those reasons (however, lack thereof may well be).

I love what I do. I have great hopes and see a bright future ahead.

May I suggest that you may have the wrong mentor if
he or she is telling you that age makes a difference. It does not
in anyt way shape or form.

Keep going and never stop. Never give up,
Get a dream for your life, decide how much money you want,
Ask yourself great questions. You'll find the answers.

We are all human and can learn anything. If your mentor tells you that you are too something to have success, then they are not the right mentor. There are several senior marketers having great results in the company I am involved with.

No matter who we are, we all have to overcome certain beliefs about ourselves and income production.

But can overcome them.

I feel this is an important topic for many baby boomer marketers.
