Why everyone is talking about quitting your 9-5 job? Is this a healthy trend?

Ok, so there has been a lot of talk on this. Every "money making" niche blog is dwelling on this dream....Escape your 9-5 grind and listen to me, quit your 9-5 thingy and follow this...10 or 100 reasons you should quit 9-5 blab bla....

But are we kinda over doing it?

I have seen some members here posting about how they have lost their job and here they are ready to start an "online money making machine" WITHOUT any investment in hand (nor a consistent stream of income).

Do you think, there has to be some kind of precautions associated with such an advice? Where would the big corporations go if everyone REALLY starts quitting their 9-5 job (not now, maybe decades later)?

Would love to know your opinion on this!

-J

First and foremost, not everyone is talking about quitting their jobs. There will always be people who prefer to work a steady job and receive fair compensation for their time and effort. So, there will never, ever be a time when businesses won't be able to find employees.

There is a segment of people that would prefer to be entrepreneurs. There is another segment that likes the steady paycheck. Both of these groups, more or less, are made up with people that want flexibility.

I do tend to think that as we advance with technology and over the next few generations we'll see more flexibility with people who work for businesses. We've already seen a huge boost in work-life balance over the last decade with things like work-from-home and flexible work schedules..

Hi Gambino, It's always nice to hear from you. I would especially like to comment on this. I agree that there are segments of people with different preferences. But I hardly see someone promoting steady paycheck mindset (there are, but very few). On the other hand, you will find pundits and gurus at every nook and corner promoting the 'quit 9-5 job' mindset.

And this is drastically increasing the "get independent" mindset. To add more, I was reading an article on MSN money which claimed that more and more companies are now looking for INDEPENDENT freelancers because they bring in MORE fresh ideas.

So, maybe in future, companies will look for independent contractors that work from home (at hours they prefer) which is kinda win-win for both parties; contractors can enjoy the freedom of working hours and their cozy warm homes, while employers can still get their job done.
Thanks for your great insight. Cheers!

Should anyone who has spent any time at all as an Internet marketer wonder why the gurus are promoting the "quit 9-5 job mindset?"

They want to sell you their products, systems, and services. If you don't plan to start a business online, why do you need them?

There is always something that takes precedence because you feel like you really don’t have the time, space, money, or support to give something up-normal such as "quitting your day job" . Maybe you are just already too tired at the end of the day between your day job and your family responsibilities. These are all understandable reasons that could be preventing you from taking action. The main point here is to get started.

Entrepreneurship is riskier way of earning money that 9-5 job. Everyone might be talking about that but we all know how hard it is to start earning money on the internet. If it works then it's great but there are really many people that fail. Personally I don't think that it's smart to quit normal job to start own business. I prefer much more to continue with 9-5 job and to find some time to work on IM, freelancing or some alternative. Good time-management is definitely needed.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that you should quit your job to start doing internet marketing, that would be irresponsible. Suggesting that you should start doing internet marketing in the hopes that one day you will be able to quit your job is another thing.

I do not see the world ever changing. Most people simply want to have a good job and don't have the drive or mindset to do anything otherwise.

Hi Diablo, you are quite right. But there are people who are in debts yet they get so much inspired by online courses and get rich quick schemes that they end up spending thousands of dollars on online courses.

In this case, I love Ramit Sethi's approach. He refuses to sell his courses to people who are bankrupt or are already in debt. Even if someone slips in, he makes refunds immediately, ban them from taking his courses, and instead send them a free ebook on "how to get out of debt." He believes that anyone who wants to pursue his online dream must first put some food on the table, and then take RISK of "the online dream".

If someone is 'lucky' enough to have a job, they should be in gratitude for having a way to feed, clothe and even shelter themselves.

However, JOBS are not reliable anymore. Slowly all the high paying jobs that used to actually pay a person what they deserve (based on your skills, knowledge and experience regarding your industry) are being moved overseas to other countries.

And many other 'lower' paying jobs (even McDonalds) not to mention bank tellers (higher income level than McDonald's employee) are slowly being replaced by computers.

    So in a nutshell...

You don't have to come online and learn how to become successful. But those that stay in the 'job' market...don't complain because staying there is your decision.

Too bad they didn't tell the real truth. More and more companies are looking for independent freelancers because the companies are off the hook for things like SSI, unemployment insurance and benefits.

Oh, and not everyone is talking about quitting the 9-5. Just the gooroos targeting the segment of people who tend to throw around terms like "cubicle rat" and "wage slave". And those people, of course.

Thanks John! I never thought of it. Companies are playing a smarter game here. Especially, with the advancing technology, it has become a lot easier to virtually work for someone without any glitches in communication.

it's selling "the Dream" and it has been around NOT just on the Internet but for many , many years before that in Mail order ads and other mediums.

The Internet just magnifies in that much more and makes it more accessible for ALL kinds of shady people to promote "the dream"

In the future 10 years, the people who are not doing a concept work, mental based,
or unique work, they will be replaced by a machine or a collagues in the opposite side of the world, i mean eastern world, who will do the same job at 70% less of the cost.

    It's the progress.

Not everyone will do internet marketing, but it could be essential in the future for people living in the western countries.

    WHY?

Cause we cant stop the progress. We can't assume that all the jobs will be made by us.

Eastern countries are rapidly growing, and they have more people and less costs.

So: online business IS the best work we can do, and there will be space for anyone who wanna jump in it.
Why? Cause there will be always niches without enough products/content.

So build a list around your niche, spend some bucks in advertising and learn the email marketing system.

What we are doing is moving toward a gig economy. Look at FIVERR and UBER to see the direction we are going in. Sadly, most people like the 9 - 5 jobs that promise you some income. Also, there is unemployment insurance and when you retire a pension. Well, those days might soon be over.

Hmmmm.... I guess I'm not living back in the 1950's..... That is when "those days" were over.....

I've never heard of a "job" promising to pay you... They only pay you as long as you're providing more value than what you're being paid...... If they want to fire you for any reason or no reason, in many states, they can.

Unemployment insurance is not even enough for the average person to survive.... and it eventually runs out.

Retire with a pension? I don't personally know of one person working for a company that provides a pension. They ALL have 401Ks... The employees pay in.... The lucky ones work where their employers throw in a few dollars... or do limited matching. The days of a "full pension" where you pay nothing in are long gone...

I have two thoughts behind this...

    1. "Burn the ships" mentality and give yourself no option but to succeed. Quit your job so you put it all on the line and don't have it to fall back on. Sink or swim!

    2. My second thought is the exact opposite. Keep your job until your making enough that your 9-5 is interfering with you making money.

Hi Chris, that's brilliant! You put it so nicely. Just want to mention that there is no rocket science on which approach will work and which not. I have seen examples of successful people who followed the approach 1, and also some people who created empires following approach no.2.
It's just about taking calculated risks. I would prefer the no.2 since it's a lot safer!
      Thanks

The only people that are quitting their 9 to 5 jobs are those that have found something they can keep doing to earn income online. I still work but I am self employed, I am a sub contractor for a bigger maintenance company, I still have my own business and customers. I also do Internet marketing part time. Personally I have nothing against a J.O.B. as long as you are working on your dream. What I mean by dream is something that you would love to do instead of working a 9 to 5 J.O.B. and someone else's dream.

While I can't speak for everyone here, I think the discussion of 'quitting your job' is usually a discussion point usually and hopefully people have put a little more thought into bidding farewell to their 9 to 5 jobs before jumping feet first into their own freelance job. I personally had a husband that was employed full time and a little bit of savings when I quit my job, and I think it is more of a trend to a more digitally based work force that is focused on remote workspaces more than anything. 30 years ago you would have been considered quite mad if you quit you job and started to work from home, now with technology it's quite possible and more common to embark on a flexible work life which is focused on balance and working independently. I am a huge fan of this trend personally, done responsibly of course.

I would say this is neither healthy nor unhealthy .. In the process of finding vocation which needs to be in healthy limits ( Sometimes working in a steady job can be very stressful because of several reasons )

At an individual level it could be unhealthy if the person is not able to make any money and puts his time and money at stake finding a non conventional vocation. In a broad view this is actually an evolutionary trend , it this continues then probably it would be subjected to analysis and give rise to better oppotunities

I work full time and do internet marketing. I have for 15 yesrs. I like my job, it pays well and provides a pension and 401k. Internet marketing provides extra income and its fun.

Quit my job? no way. Ive read where guys do this after making some nice income on the internet. Then a change is made to the laws or the platform they are using and they are back looking for that 9-5 job.

I made money with online casinos then the laws changed. I did well on Adwords then Google changed the rules. I had a website doing really well in the search engines, then Google made 2 big algorithm changes. The internet is an ever evolving place so be prepared.

Quitting your 9-to-5 is a fantasy for most that will end a fantasy. No different than fantasizing about losing weight, being built to the hilt, banging a hot celebrity, winning the lotto, traveling the World, etc..,

People buy into things that feed the fantasy they have. The act of buying gives the feeling of accomplishment, of advancing toward the goal, so smart marketers tap into those buying emotions that help people validate their fantasies by the act of purchasing something related to them.

Most Internet Marketing products are really "consumables" that provide a fantasy "fix" and then get shucked to a collectibles folder on the hard drive.

The exception is software, plugins and WP themes. Some of those end up unused as well, but not nearly as much as info products.

Edited to add...The goal of a sales page for an info product isn't to sell a fantasy, however, it's to convince you that the fantasy you already have will become a reality if you buy.

What is wrong with people wanting to have their own business and make their own money. For many it is not a "Dream" it is a goal. A goal that might not ever be achieved, but a goal none the less, and I encourage people to work toward that goal if it is what they truly want
