I know this is offtopic to this forum but wanted to share this. I couldn't believe what I'm reading on a CNN featured article. Apparently spying isn't just limited to governments anymore. Now it's called Location-as-a-Service (LaaS). Now businesses can do it too, for a premium of course.

While they're not able to get your personal identifiable information, they can still SMS you (advertising...say a local restaurant you're close to, or some shop with a sale offer when you're close by), locate you within 100m (in urban areas) if they know your cellphone number etc.

And all this is done without the need of installing any app or need for GPS. It's done through the GSM network i.e. your phone network basically.

I'm going to try it to see if my employees are actually taking detours from their planned routes. And it's not just for USA, it can locate anyone, anywhere in over 150+ countries. Now that's awesome isn't it?

Location Smart

Enjoy !

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

lol @yukon. Maybe I'm a little bit slow on the uptake. If it's been available for 10+ years, I sincerely didn't have a clue that anyone with a registered business could do this.

I mean I knew you could do it with apps geolocation and GPS tracking and stuff, but what I didn't know is that you can do it without the consent of the users in question (and it doesn't even need to be a smartphone).

(Or maybe if the company is ethical enough, it will notify the users in question?) Probably there already exist bypasses for that too. Anyway shared my two cents.

Yea, that's all been possible to do for a few years. It's called proximity marketing.

    Lol, or this...

But we have to be fair, Yukon, there are several new posts here, discussing how to supposedly make money with short links.

Probably as good as how to make $100 an hour by spamming businesses with Captcha information?

Or spammy posts about some crap?

Or you could find someone just with their company name, if you move house and your business name with it, it is easy for someone to track you down.

    Just imagine what will happen....

now company A buys lists of all cell numbers and runs it on a server
against actual pedestrians that are walking within reach of the store
of company B [the competitor of company A]

now everyone in the area approaching that shop now gets bombarded
with an all-time low special counter attack to not make them enter
    that store.

    Great right?

Well I would be throwing my cell into the next gutter,
because all big store owners will do it, and there will be
no quiet minute anymore for any cell users that are
near any major store. Great tech news.
