Are we living in the Matrix? Elon Musk says yes!
In interviews he's conducted on the subject, he brings up the very first video game ever invented, Pong. He points out the fact that Pong was about rudimentary as it comes, and we now have video games that are almost indistinguishable from reality.
â€Å"The strongest argument for us being in a simulation, probably being in a simulation is the following: 40 years ago, we had pong, two rectangles and a dot,†Musk said. â€Å"That is what games were. Now 40 years later we have photorealistic 3D simulations with millions of people playing simultaneously and it’s getting better every year. And soon we’ll have virtual reality, augmented reality, if you assume any rate of improvement at all, the games will become indistinguishable from reality.†He goes on to say that given the rate of improvement in technology, "there's a one in billions chance we are living base reality."
Some of you are reading this have to be thinking how on earth could a successful billionaire like Elon be so quick to jump to conclusions? But you have to admit, he makes pretty compelling arguement. Civilization has changed to the point where we are relying more and more on technology. And video games are at a point that multiple people from across the world can participate in real time.
The concept behind this is nothing new and many articles have been written disputing the idea that things are not what they appear to be. On a Motherboard article on the subject, they point out the pitfalls in assuming we live in a simulated world. For one, Riccardo Manzotti and Andrew Smart argue that a simulated apple would not feed anyone, if the apple is not an apple, what would it be made of?
They also point out the fact that our brains, while they are similar in how they function, are not computers. This theory makes a ton of assumptions that cannot be proven and thus Elon's theory is most likely not correct given everything we've come to know.
Obviously Elon's comments gained a lot of attention (this happened in June of this year) but it seems he has not backed off of these comments. It got me thinking that while he very well may believe this to be true, it's also possible that Elon is using his platform to gain a bigger buzz for Tesla and SpaceX. No one can really argue the fact that the best publicity is free publicity.
My question to you all is, which do you think is true? Is this real life or not? And is Elon Musk just pulling eveyone's leg in an effort to drum up more publicity?
