Hey Warrior Forum,

I have been writing business plans professionally for about 7 years. I got my start at a securities law firm where I mainly wrote business plans for S-1 Registration Statements, Super 8-Ks, and Private Placement Memorandum. After I left the law firm, I formed my own company and I would tell people I was a Business Plan Writer.

After being out on my own for awhile, I dabbled in all the titles; Principal, Founder, CEO, etc. I feel like none of those really make sense when you are working for yourself. When you are working for yourself (with no partners or employees), you really just own your own job and not a business, so titles seem ridiculous.

My main clients now are small businesses and startups seeking bank loans or venture capital. Because of this, I do much more consulting and business planning throughout a much longer business plan writing process. I even take on consulting-only clients. For years, I have referred to myself as a Business Development Consultant. Feel like a descriptive title is more appropriate when you are working alone.

Recently, I have been using multiple RSS feeds to find client leads via numerous websites. The bulk of my work is still consulting and writing business plans, but I feel like I have made the crossover into Freelancer as a title. However, I do not feel like I will ever call myself a freelancer. Why is that?

What is your title on your business cards? And, what is your 3-5 word job description to people who don't know what you do? I find these are often two separate things.
