Work for Yourself vs Work for Others vs Others work for You

My father used to say that I can simply forget about making some serious money, unless I change my situation from "working for others" to "others working for me." Now, the most serious problem is that back in his days, the concept of "working for yourself" had a completely different meaning. Actually, when I think about it, I'm free to say it even didn't exist. The only two options available some 40 or 50 years ago were either you work for someone or you have some guys working for you. There was no middle ground, or maybe there was?

I work for myself by running an independent online radio. My partner also works for himself as a developer. However, at the same time, we work for others, as well. I work for our advertisers, who are paying our bills. My partner also works through his development company for his clients. And, we have a blog writer who works for us. So, the things have obviously become more complicated. There are so many modalities and options that it's making it impossible to find a pure category of work these days. You can be whatever you want or you need to be. You can be an employer or employee at the same time and even more than once.

So, is this is a good or a bad thing?

I think everyone gets what they really deserve by their efforts in a particular direction or to achieve something in life. Doesn't make any difference for you to know whether it is good or bad, "you are working" that is the thing that matters, and you are happy with what you do in your life that matters. Being an employee or employer doesn't matter in life.

Generally speaking, you won't get rich, or financially independent through working for someone else. If the employer was not benefiting more from the relationship than you are, the contract would not exist.

My personal view of most self-employed people is that they are not business people. Having a one person business makes you an employee of your own company, even if you are semantically in business for yourself.

I guess you will always 'work' for someone, regardless of how large the company becomes or how many employees you have. I guess the idea is to grow the business to a point where you are not dealing with the day to day operations, and instead focusing on the bigger picture.

Ah, great points! Will remember this one that you always work for someone, even if this someone means to work for yourself. It's all the same, lol. I'm my own boss, and I already hate my boss, lol. The bigger picture vs daily time consuming operations. I get it. Thank you.

A book I recommend reading is "The Millionaire Fast Lane".

It talks about the different lane people take in life and it will definitely open your eyes regarding opportunities. That being said, the most obvious and best route is to have others work for you. But I'm sure that goes without saying.

Yes, that's an obvious thing to say, but how to achieve it, that's a true science. No wonder, people are writing books about it. I would definitely check this book. Thx.

Rich Dad, Poor Dad is another good one; that teaches the pitfalls of working for someone as opposed to working for yourself.

But 40 or so years ago, or the 70's, direct marketing or mail-order was the way to wealth back then. Start off on your kitchen table and expand if it works.

I tried it a few times before going online in late 2008, and like anything it takes time and effort.

But making money online being a true science, possibly, but it all comes down to persistence, trying, changing tracks, accepting defeat, investing and trying again.

I have been online for more than 8 years, have tried just about everything except PPV l guess.

I am doing fonts now, but after a year of trying have made little, but it is not uncommon to do PPC for a year without any monetary returns.

Staying with one thing that you know works for some, are comfortable with, and persisting with it, regardless of anything will do it.

Great suggestion on The Millionaire Fastlane. That book was a surprising eyeopener for me.

Is there a chapter on how I might get out of the ditch after running off the road?

F.Y. I. The key is to finding the right type of employees. The wrong type will cause you a lot aggravation and can destroy your business. Having employees work for you is not always easy. You have to know how to properly deal with them and keep them motivated. Having to fire or lay off an employee that has a family is one of the hardest decisions you will have to make.
