Treating it Like a 9-5

Heya Warriors! I have 3-5 months to figure this out or get a real job.

I've been considering getting back into Internet Marketing. Specifically for the Xo, Faith site listed in my signature. It's a peer to peer support website featuring topics like chronic pain and physical well-being. I have $100 I can spare on it on a monthly basis which means, I need to be careful about what I'm doing.

Thus far I imagine a typical "9-5" day to look something like this:

9:00am - Write Morning Post
10:30am - Edit Post for Publication
11:00am - Publish Post & Syndicate to Social Media
12:00pm - LUNCH (yum)
1:00pm - Reach Out for Guest Positing Opportunities
2:00pm - Write a Guest Post for Publication
3:30pm - Set up Social Media Schedules
4:00pm - Blog Commenting and/or eMail Marketing tactics

What does your IM 9-5 look like? Care to share?

Having a solid plan and good, consistent work ethic is half the battle (IMO).

    Good luck.

Well I technically don't have a 9-5. This is because I sleep at 4 AM and wake up at 12 PM. Weird habit I know.

But I start working around 2 and get it done by 7 or 8.

I am trying to change my schedule to make it a more 9-5 thing but I guess I am accustomed to this lifestyle.

Good luck with the targets you are trying to achieve

My working times are similar to others here, so not 9-5, usually 11am to 3 am.

What am l doing, fonts mainly. But l do have a new strategy for doing them, so cannot really discuss that, since it has taken me a year of hard work, and meagre returns to figure that out.

I wish you all the best.

Yes, l didn't want to spell it out, but blogging and social media, pfffff,....seems like a sure-fire way to an interview.

I still use social media, but it is a virtually useless way to make serious money online.

Spent 2.5 years more than 5 years ago, writing content, doing all of that kw stuff, optimizing my pages, blah, blah, with a couple of bucks in adsence per month to show for it.

Some can make decent money from this, but about 93% won't, so it is a risk.

I would give the blog idea 4 to 6 weeks, then ditch it, unless it shows real potential. Blogging or creating a site, is very labour intensive.

Getting a new account with Fiverr and taking on anything, could give you about $700 a month.

But the best idea is to look into creating video's for local businesses. Do a professional looking video on Fiverr, and sell it to a business for a few hundred. Probably do the video for $50, and make a few hundred.

I haven't tried this myself, but have got offers from some giftware businesses to do a site for them, so l believe that it would work.

I don't see why structuring my time is a bad thing? There's more than one reason to mimic a 9-5 schedule.

In any event, I'm not basing this labor off of unproven results. There's an endgame here with advertising but I need to get my blog traffic up before I can approach that.

you should be working your plan and not worrying about what my, or other peoples, plan is

Thank YOU! I am simply doing it this way because, I need some kind of structure to keep me focused ya know? There are just far too many online distractions when working online.

Do they have a point? (Many people are too concerned about what other people are doing/thinking about them.) If not, just ignore them. Something to remember no matter what you're doing (especially when you start becoming successful) people will always say you're doing something wrong.

Yes, structuring your time is a proven method for success. Treating it like a job is a proven method for success. Simply because Internet Marketing is your job for yourself.

Now, what I was considering or asking for feedback on was asking for feedback on was what strategies should I be using during that 9-5 time and how to keep on track.

Just because you failed at it, doesn't mean it doesn't work. There are people who are millionaires off of blogging and social media alone.

True, but most cannot get it to work.

And l didn't say do videos for Fiverr, use Fiverr intro's, etc to do a professional looking video and market it to local businesses.

So do that and do quite well from it. But it is door to door selling, so it has its drawbacks.

Well, I have had success in the past doing it this way. One way to do it is to build up your site and then sell advertising space independently of an advertising network like adsense or media.net. Once you build your domain authority up along with your social media accounts, it's easy enough to get sponsors for your content.

The best bit about it is, that this allows you to blog about something that is important to you and that you are passionate about. Makes it a lot easier than writing articles for other people on topics you don't care for or being a door to door salesman.

Everyone is different. If you make your money doing videos that is great. That simply is not my expertise or my passion.

I've taken up the OP's suggestion and structured my day as follows.

      9.00 Start work
9.01 Watch cat videos on YouTube.
      9.30 Morning tea break
      9.45 Nap under desk
      12.30 Lunch (yum)
      14.30 Afternoon nap under desk
16.45 Watch more cat videos on YouTube
17.00 Finish work for the day.

If I can maintain a hectic schedule like that, I should be successful by next Tuesday.

Why did you stop working that schedule "in the past"? You do what works for you. Others do what works for them. Everyone feels "my way is the right one" - human nature.

Part of the joy of working at home is flexibility of schedule and work hours.

Wow, people around here are salty aren't they? I was simply looking for strategy feedback and looking to have a time-management conversation with a few people.
You are having a "time management conversation" - but not one where everyone agrees with you or admires your detailed work schedule. The only person who needs to approve of your schedule - is you.

What people are saying (and they are poking at you a bit) is that many marketers love NOT having a job - NOT working a "9-5" - NOT being strictly scheduled. In reality - many IMers do work 'regular hours' because it fits well with family duties. There is no right or wrong to it.

I think sticking to a schedule can help new marketers - otherwise it's easy to spend the day chatting on forums, watching cat videos, reading email sales pitches, etc - and then realize you got no work done.

As time goes on you adapt schedules to suit your personal tastes and lifestyle. That's how it should be, isn't it?

I stopped working this particular schedule because I got offered a marketing position with a reputable casino that paid about 5x what I was making doing it "my way." I've been with the casino for 5 years and recently due to office politics and a few other personal reasons I decided to go ahead and take a stab at doing it on my own with something I'm actually passionate about.

I totally get that. The warrior forum used to be a place where people exchanged ideas and built each other up. After becoming active on here again, I can see the attitude has drastically changed.

No one is open to new ideas and people are attacking each other and bringing each other down for no particular reason. It seems really petty and is not constructive criticism.

I don't see that happening here. If you look honestly at this thread you'll notice the first 6 posts after your first post in the thread - were supportive and offering their own experience with scheduling.

You didn't respond until there were two posts (#7 and 8) that questioned such a strict schedule as being "like a job". Not an unusual stance as IM is often praised for flexibility of schedule.

Take the positive comments and proceed to work in whatever way lets you be most productive. Allow others to disagree without taking it personally. And just laugh at the comedians.

I recently read an excellent book on productivity, The One Thing' by Gary Keller. In there he mentions Stephen King (pretty sure it was him) and his schedule. Basically it boils down to producing what has to be done in 4 hours and spending the rest of your day on the 'other' stuff. Excellent read for entrepreneurs, which is what we all are.
