6-foot lizard invades elementary school playground in Mississippi - Breaking News from the Press-Register - al.com

About 10 minutes north of here the crocodile monitor lizard above was found in a tree in the school yard. He was rather easily caught which makes me think he may not be in great physical condition. Poor kids were confined in the school until wildlife people could remove him.

I think the 6 feet is a bit exaggerated as the film on local news looked about 4 feet. The lizard is from New Guinea as far as I know so may be a released pet (and possibly an illegal one) and looks rather thin compared to pictures of other monitors.

Can be nasty little fellows as they have razor sharp teeth that meet with a sawing action so they produce a nasty bite. I think this guy is on his way to the wildlife center.

isn't 6 foot, or even 4 foot kind of big for a monitor? I thought they were relatively small

Not this kind - they can grow up to 8-10 ft. But they are usually much wider in the middle which makes me think this guy needed help.

EDIT: I had been told 8-10 feet but found references online that say bigger

the Crocodile Monitor Lizard has been recorded at almost 15 feet in total length. Crocodile Monitors are arboreal so they do not obtain the massive weight of the Komodo Dragon, which is primarily a Terrestrial Lizard. In fact, two thirds of the total length of the Croc Monitor is composed of their massive tail. Crocodile Monitors have the claim to fame of having the Largest Teeth, Longest Tail, and Largest Claws of any lizard species.
