Yo Fellas,

It's been months since my last post but I was wondering if anyone has been investing in Iraqi currency - Dinar? Right now it's trading at about $1,050 dinar to $1 USD. Idea is that the central banks will revalue the currency at about $1.61 (rumors). Before the USA invaded Iraq the currency was over $3

Basically long story short it's a big loooooooooong shot that may pay off big.

Just wanted to see what you guys thought.

Sure we did Pat. How else would you describe it? Military intervention? Lending a hand?

    you mean we weren't invited?

i thought there was/is always a certain element that wanted our help.

why would they hang sadam if they were not in favor of him being 'unseated' and now disembodied.

i am sick of being villified, aren't you? almost as sick of having 4000 Americans die for what?

their families would be very disappointed that they died invading Iraq. I am sure they thought they were doing something good like rescuing people or avenging victims of genocide.

    well whoops.

oh well the point was dinar vs lunch - or drunch

      Andres,

You're betting that a $1,000 investment will turn into $1,610 after the conversion?

It's late, so I'm just asking you to check my math...

        Hi KJ,

Actually you can buy $250k Iraqi dianar for $280USD. Now here is what is pure speculation - the Dinar will revalue to maybe $1.61 (all rumor).

Just do the math $250k x $1.61 = $402,500. (Of course lets not forget 28% cap gains and the commission you pay the bank to exchange).

Like I said it's a looooooooooooooooooooog shot and I actually did get some but I am treating it like a lotto ticket. If it hits great if not fine, life goes on.

An invasion is an invasion. We also invaded Normandy on D Day.

Yep ..check your math..Go ahead and buy the physical dinar from an exchange agent. You can't play this trade on forex..so that is your only way of being safe. Stuff like this is leaked to make earlybirds money. Your all prolly to late. I follow the forex religiously and this sounds like a penny stock hype situation. But what the hell. Throw a couple hundred bucks at it if you can aforrd it. Personally ...I'd go and spend that money on something else.

I won't get political but I was against the invasion from the beginning.

Even got my truck tires slashed when I spoke out against it.

Anyway, I bought 300,000 Dinar in small bills 5 years ago...

Will it go up....hard to tell...it's definately a longshot.

So much has been produced and sold that it's actually devalued the currency before it had a chance to gain some value.

I think when Iraq's economy does start to function, one of the first things they're going to do is change the currency again

InvestorsIraq is a good forum to go too for info....but some of the things they've got going on there seems sort of like a scam.....so be careful

Anyway it's like Andres said...it's like a longshot lottery ticket

If it pays...it's gonna pay big...but probably not but that's OK too

I've spent alot of money on stupid stuff that didn't pan-out

It was amazing how most Americans were out for blood and the social climate had been whipped up so that if you were against the invasion, you were viewed as unpatriotic.

Now we know ( at least most Americans know ) that the whole affair was as wrong as a 3 dollar bill.

Of course the world's a better place without Saddam but was it worth...

    - 4000+ American lives?

    - 35k seriously injured?

    - 1 trillion up front ( not paid for/put on the tab ) and perhaps as high as a total of 2 trillion on the back end?

    - Families ripped apart?

    - Allowing the Taliban & Al Quada to escape & regroup when we could have helped secure Afghanistan in a few years?

It's happened before and I guess it will happen again as long as people are gullible, jingoistic and there's lots of money to be made.

I have to agree TL, it really wasn't worth it. Truth be told Osama is still out there and we don't have too much to show for.

Then there's the effect on Iraqis: Estimated Iraqi deaths anywhere from a few hundred thousand to well over one million. Millions more displaced. Tens of millions more directly affected by the war. The fact that Iraqi Christians have since been killed, driving out of country or forced underground by the millions. The fact that women have lost freedoms. The fact that Iraqis want us out of their country.

Well, If they wanted to attack another country, I wish they would just DO IT! They really HAVEN'T for a VERY long time. They started to show a LITTLE of the capability during the first Iraq "war", but it was SHORT LIVED! Still, they did it by surprise, caused a lot of damage, and didn't lose a SINGLE person! And it was QUICK! NOW, if they had hit government offices, infrastructure, and defense, the whole "war" could have been over in HOURS! MAYBE someone would have turned UBL over! There would have been fewer deaths, and ALL would have been IRAQI! Frankly, ISRAEL did a better job in their "war" of sorts. They attacked the radar system using drones.

But NO, all those BILLIONS we paid LONG ago are sitting somewhere now being oiled, etc.... so they don't rust away! And people fought on the ground! It is like they are running the government with 5yo doing math on paper while computers sit by purring away!

I was always against the type of "war" that is being fought now. It is worse than WWI! We paid a LOT of money to do FAR better! We could cause destruction similar to the end of WWII in a quiet, covert, and safer to BOTH sides fashion with NO nuclear weapons or fallout. Unfortunately, given their mindset, there are only TWO options! Either a DECISIVE victory, or a horrendous and embarrasing, cowardly, and impotent surrender. Frankly, at this point, I don't think obliteration of the country would make the situation any better. I don't think ANYONE could ever call it a victory.

So what was that money spent for?

As for the Iraqi currency, the area is unstable, so there is a GOOD chance that the currency won't do well. The currency could become WORTHLESS TOMORROW! That happened with the German Mark in WWII! There was a window where you could redeem the marks at a devalued rate and, after that, they were WORTHLESS! The SAME thing happened in the US during the civil war! The SAME happened LATER with the federal reserve. HECK, look at GM stock and bonds recently! So this has a LOT of precedent! Germany is STILL around, and strong. The US is STILL around, and still limping along. GM is STILL building cars, etc.... Yet ALL THREE had financial vehicles that today are TOTALLY WORTHLESS!!!!!!
