I have both of them when my son comes down and be honest if your son is into just gaming and not watching dvds or blue ray dvd then the xbox would be better however you do have to pay for the online subcription so he can play his games online.

this is were the ps3 is different as you can simply pop the cd of the game and walla, you online playing anyone or even if he misses watching something then you can watch bbc i player or have the option of the blue ray so my vote is the ps3

one problem with xbox360 is something called the yellow or red light of death, it can happen to ps3 also but it is rare, thats when the console just burns out and refuses to switch on or just shows the red/yellow light, i know now that sony have fixed that with the new playstation 3 model, so i would say playstation 3 for my vote

hope that helps

I have an Xbox360 and a Wii and I can tell you that I play the Xbox a good deal more simply because the games are better. Most anything that comes out for PS3 comes out for Xbox (but not Wii) too. You do get a free silver subscription to the XBox Live service but I haven't used it so I can't comment on that part. Plus there are a lot of games on the Xbox that I think 14 year olds would love -- Halo and such.

Just my two cents!

PS3 has blue ray, that should be enough right there to get it.
With that being said, I personally have a wii,and I love it,though there are some types of games that I just cant see playing on the wii, like the COD franchise.

I also run a small gaming forum, and a lot of the people I game with swear by the PS3,and trust ne these are hard-core gamers!

As far as the "yellow or red light of death" 123bc , mentioned, I don't know much about it but I do know there is a warrior that sells an ebook on how to fix it for fun and profit. Maybe he will see this thread and can shed some light on it.

PS3 is the worst out of the three. So Id suggest either a Wii or a xbox 360, better games, larger range, cheaper games/accessories, win win sitation.

And you say this why? To say better games is an opinion.
Larger range? ALmost every store that sells these systmes has the most space dedicated to the PS3,at least where I am.
Cheaper games/accessories? I will concede that it seems the wii has the larger selection of accessories.

Does he play games at a friends house? If so, find out which games are his favorites. There are some games that are exclusive to one console.

People are religious about game consoles.

I'm an XBox guy. You ask me, I say get him an XBox. I can argue this point in minute detail with any PS3 jockey.

But that PS3 jockey can argue just as hard with me, and he will.

Neither of us will "win."

You need some indication about what console he wants, but don't ask him straight out. Ask him what games he's looking forward to playing.

If any of those games ONLY work on one console, that's the one to buy.

If you're lucky, he'll launch into some huge rant about how much one of the consoles sucks. Don't get him that one.

I'm that writer you ask how to find every time your other writers deliver.

Oh man...glad this is an IM forum and NOT a gaming forum.

You would've just started a Flame War with that question.

Xbox 360 has, technically speaking, slightly easier hardware to program for (from what I understand). Meaning that, it gets more exclusives than ps3.

Also, PC ports tend to work better on the 360.

However, the ps3 does have blue ray. And they have 7 full working core processors. (Actually 8, but the 8th is faulty and is disabled on all ps3's). However, I hear that most designers have a slightly harder time with the coding.

Personally, I play Xbox, but I have a ps2 and have considered getting a ps3 for a few games that I want.

Basically, most designers nowadays port for both systems, so he won't be missing on many games with a ps3. Plus you get a blueray player.

XBOX seems to be the most popular with more games, but ps3 seems to be a more versatile unit. xbox also has a deal with the 'red ring of death'.

I agree, if he's wanting to get into console gaming (or already does), chances are he has a strong opinion. I would suggest training your black ops skillz and secretly gathering some intelligence from him. But don't be annoying about it .

That is probably the best idea.

If he does have an opinion about gaming already, then he may be in either camp...and believe me, buying an xbox for a die hard ps3'er is like spitting on their mother...it won't be pretty! (same goes the other way around)

PS3 for me, nowhere near as many games but the games they do have are the nuts. Online is free also.

Plus I hate the controller layot for the x-box. Not to mention the blu ray player.

I think I would be more happeir with the ps3, but maybe ask his mates if they would know.

If not buy the PS3 and if he doesnt like it you keep it and get him the xbox as you'll love it lol

I'm really tempted to say this!

Why buy him something he can waste his life playing on!

Why not buy him something he can use his life to move forward with instead.

You can lead a man to water, but you can't make him drink.
You can teach a man to fish and he can feed his family for life.

Giving any of your children the latest gazmos is a sign you are ready to turn them over to the nanny state!

Right, thinking on this post - I'm not being bah humbug!! I'm being real.
Bought mine the latest "toys" from the sinclair to the xbox and all it does is isolate them in their rooms, Listen up guys! they need human interaction not feckin games consoles in their rooms to keep them out of the way.

LOL - I've been playing video games on consoles and PC's since I was 9 years old. (I'm 26 now).

I run a successful internet business.

I love people and social interaction.

I spent a big chunk of my childhood playing games.

I still spend a big chunk of my life playing games.

It depends on the kid and the situation. You can't make blanket judgments about people. Maybe this kid is a social butterfly. Maybe he works hard at school/work. Maybe he doesn't at all.

Regardless, if we follow your philosophy straight to the end, we shouldn't ever buy any kid anything related to entertainment and only on "self improvement". But funnily enough, because of certain video games, I can actually manage my business fairly well, thanks to the quick thinking and planning skills I've picked up. So I suppose my games HAVE been self improvement.

Just a thought.

Rob

If you're into gaming and graphics, I like the xbox 360.

However, we bought a wii last Christmas, and everyone in the family plays that thing, including the grandparents. There are a ton of family friendly games for it, and it's a load of fun. If you want to keep your kid from isolating him/her self in their room, buy a wii and put it in the family room.

I like 360 better than PS3. The only pro with PS3 is you dont have to pay for an online feature. However 360 dominates with more games, and I just like the whole feel a lot better.

It really just depends on what is preferred. Some games are available exclusively per console.

If you decide on an Xbox though you might want to do some research about their overheating problems. On the original ones you would get a "red ring of death" when they overheated and broke. You can just send it to MS and they fix it though.

I think they have fixed this, but be careful if you get one on Ebay or something.

I would go with the PS3. The price has gone down now. Much more affordable compared to when it was released. I actually spent the night outside BestBuy on the release date and did not get a darn thing.

LOL - I was at BestBuy when a stunt similar to this one was pulled off, only they used a car instead of a sledge hammer....

My experience thus far is that if you don't care about the Blu-Ray part, go with the Xbox 360. It simply has more good games, and there's a very valid reason for that: ease of development. Thanks to Microsoft's software, it's really easy for game companies who have a lot of experience with the PC to develop for the 360 as well, while PS3 is a nightmare in comparison.

I just got banned from xbox Live last week. I deserved it though . I personally like the 360 for its massive library but the PS3 has some real gems. I picked up Uncharted 2 and it has to be one of the best games I've ever played.

Hey,

Dont think about it for to long ok, I will make it easy for you.....

XBOX 360 is by far the best way forward, the best games, the biggest online community, it also added facebook twitter etc and obviously msn.

New project natal released in the new year too which will be biggest selling gadget ever, its basically a scanner which scans you and your item ie remote control or skate board or what ever then you play completely free. No remote at all, like the wii apart from with the wii you hold something with this new tech you are hands free.

Search google for project natal its going to be a revalation/revolution
