Right now, 60 minutes is doing a story on hackers. And let me tell you, this
is some scary sh*t.

You can't even begin to imagine some of the infrastructures in the US that
have been hacked.

And we worry about somebody taking down our blog.

Wow...just wow.

Yep, Steve, it's impressive. It is to me, at least. I wish I
had the knowledge to do that kind of stuff. But I'd really
have no idea what I would do. Perhaps be a consultant,
    or something.

I read some years ago about a kid who hacked one of the
alphabet agency protected areas. He said he just did it to
see if he could do it. What else you gonna do after you're
in? lol. Take a look around and be able to say you were there?

It seems like all my sites were hacked into about a week ago. Every one of my domains had new index.html and index.php files with a line of code that directed them to another site.

At the same time my webhost was having DNS issues... hmmm.....

Hi,.. one of my clients from Brisbane had his server/domain hacked last week. It was a Wordpress site and I figured they hacked the password and user name that contained "dictionary style" words which is a bit silly. Also the tables prefix for the WP database was still set to "wp_" (Fantastico default) and therefore the rest was easy to guess via random software they use.
Anyway,.. we deleted the WP database and the WP files install and themes...completely wiped clean... but the hackers kept inserting rogue index.php and index.html files plus image files (you name it),.. so evidently they had hacked the user name and password of the ftp and cpanel ..which were also generic terms (e.g. batmanlives123). The client has elected to Nuke the site and start over with fresh (non-generic) user name and passwords and also install unqiue WP DB table prefixes and other stuff. Actually,.. for WP (and non WP too) you can get plugin scripts that will alert you to any suspicious activity in your admin or on your blog and will also shut it down if it suspects hacker activity.
The thing is to jump onto any such attempts quickly.
Always keep a clean cache of files offline so you can restore in an emergency. Do daily backups... and be prepared to "Nuke" any site where hackers have shown their evil presence!

What I find amazing is a news agency that practically gives anyone that wants to hurt us, a blue print, and then telling them that we are not even protected.

    Scary s&^t indeed!

I so agree - I think 'freedom of information' goes too far. How about a little self-protection?

How about letting our enemies know - 'oh we are just about out of soldiers - we are stretched so thin', and, 'oh, by the way, in case you are thinking of exploiting that breach, this is how to build a suitcase bomb'.

    Too much information is FUBAR!

There is nothing new here, no blueprints for the bad guys. The weaknesses
of modern societies infrastructure has been documented for the last twenty
years. Heck, IP spoofing was documented by CERT in 1985. I first became
aware in 1992 when I subscribed to the Usenet newsgroup comp.risks. It is
a fact that when the general public becomes aware of something, it is very
        old news.

For more comprehensive documentaries search for history of hacking and
similar keywords, you will find several shows from Discovery Channel and
PBS. There are also many sites that have covered these issues for years.

It seems odd that in a forum where so many people have complained of
sites being hacked that any of this could be surprising.

All technology, especially computer stuff, is immediately torn apart and
examined for vulnerabilities the very day it is released. There are many
genius level hackers, both good and bad that do nothing else.

It's a natural part of life in a technological society. No point in being stressed.

This is so true. It's also why the term "News" is one of the biggest oxymorons in the English language.

It generally means Nothing Even Worth Seeing.

Bill, this is true for most of your mundane stuff.

The exceptions are the late breaking bulletins about events happening
            right now, such as 9/11.

            Obviously, THAT was news.

For what it's worth, I am not a fan of network news in general. I think
most of it is pretty biased, but occasionally I will see something that
gets my interest. This particular story did...whether or not it is really
"news" as in something new that we need to know about.

As far as how true the story is, who knows? We can only go by what
            they tell us.

And over the years, I've learned to take all that with a grain of salt too.

But it was a fascinating piece of journalism if nothing else.

Steve, I turned the TV on when I saw your post but they had just started the Agassi story so I missed the Hacker part.

Btw, we're on the same page here regarding current happenings.

              Except for the car chases...

Agassi's story was the real shocker for me.

                Hated tennis
                Did meth.

Wow, who would have ever thunk it?
