I got hit by virus this morning. A real strange virus. It threatens me that my computer is under attack and that I need protection. Do I want to purchase protection?
When I click yes it takes me to Antivirus System PRO Powerfull PC Protection
Now, please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that an affiliate link?

It looks it, I'd contact that company and let them know what happened.
It seems they would fix the problem or you can report them and have them shut down.

Yes this is a common SPAMMER technique.

I reported one of them to Skype after blocking them -

This is a little beyond 'emotional triggers' and is a flat-out sleezy "marketing" technique.

If you really want to get vindictive you might try coolwhois.com and see who owns the domain and what the hosting company and domain registrar are.

Then report/COMPLAIN to those entities about spamming. Scaring people I don't think is illegal however but it should be.

They're doing more than scare me. They are threatening my very livelihood. Then they whisk me off to porno.com and threaten to tell my "husband" I have been there.

But guys, I really, really appreciate this information.

This is happening way too often, and in my opinion the FTC should be paying more attention to these sleazy ad techniques than the fake testimonials. I've known too many new computer and internet users that have fallen for these, and have actually paid in. This is out right theft in my book.

Boy, that phone number doesn't work and I'm losing more business by the minute. I'd already sent a ticket in. They have ignored it. I'm drowning in porn off this thing on top of that.

You need to run an anti-spyware tool to get rid of that. I've used this one w/ success in the past:

SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

You might be a little too far gone, personally I would suggest hiring someone to fix your computer.

My dad got hit by the same thing last year, pretty nasty stuff.

Well, I'm sorry to say that Reno won't do the trick. Probably, if I had had it already on the computer it would have worked wonders. At least the porno has stopped for the last few minutes. I'll take the computer to a repairman and -- probably just get a new pc... maybe a MAC this time.

Mark, that SuperAntiSpyware seems to be turning the trick after all. At least it says it is working. 20 minutes of checking so far -- the other software couldn't even get installed.

All I can say real quick though is after you do all this stuff - you can download free crap cleaner from ccleaner.com and this might help get any remnants out of your registry. it is a good idea to run it every week or so as I do just to keep clean and organized.

    special place in hell alright.

Mark, Patrician, et al. Just by following the instructions given to me here I, computer flubber first class, have come out the other side of this mountain better than I went in. Nobody is more amazed (or grateful) than I am. My computer is working much better than it was before this virus struck. True, I lost 15 hours and gained an arch enemy buy by golly I feel like a whole herd of blessings has stampeded over me.
Thank you one, thank you all.
