Online Etiquette - Learning Thread

There are a number of rules that can apply to online networking.
For example, when you are a newbie you might be responding to somebody in upper case. This actually means in online lingo that you're screaming at them.

However, people new to online networking may not realize that this is a no-no online. You have to learn what's appropriate or not appropriate for online networking such as the lingo.

There are different acronyms that are used regularly and it's quite alright
for you to ask, "I'm new online, can you tell me what that means?"

People can be pretty flexible and understanding when you ask, but
you do need to learn what's appropriate and inappropriate for behavior in
online networking.

    Hi Keith,

Not exactly sure what you're trying to achieve
with this thread but if you're talking about online
etiquette - the simple ones are to not TYPE IN
CAPS BECAUSE IT'S VERY LOUD TEXT (even though
    it makes no sound).

If you're talking about online networking, other
than not typing in caps, I think it's much more
crucial to be able to be "emotionally detached" so
    to speak.

Here's what I mean... most people argue over the
internet because they disagree with what one person
    stated.

Now, I find that to be totally asinine and a waste
of time because there's so much better things to do
with your life than to be arguing over something which
really doesn't matter and will be forgotten after a day
    or two.

Many people just don't know how to communicate
properly. And with the power of anonymity on the
internet, people let their "dark sides" manifest and
start being very mean -- stating very hurtful words
    and comments.

Here's how I deal with it: I think of those people as
little children. You know how some little children can
just say the most blunt stuff because they don't know
how to put it across in a diplomatic and nice way?

Most people on the internet just don't know how to
express their thoughts in words alone. It takes lots of
practice to be able to weave emotions into words and
capture the true spirit of what the writer meant into
    sentences.

When someone says something dumb, irresponsible,
etc, detach yourself and respond in a responsible,
adult manner. Be nice. Shower thanks everywhere
(we've already got lots of hate on the net, why not
spread a little bit of luuurve?).

If the other person "just doesn't get it", you have the
power to ignore him/her. He/she sends you hate mail?
Delete. He/she posts fake stuff on the net? Ignore it.
(Except for business stuff, you can take legal action
    there)

Really, a lot of stuff can be ignored. It's only if you
want to use it. I ignore lots of idiots on the internet.
I'd rather be a happy idiot than a grumbling genius
any day! (of course, I'd choose to be a happy genius)

    Asher
