I'm trying to cast small pewter medallians with detail similar to a state seal; an image with lettering around. I've tried rtv molds but they provide no detail, maybe a gas venting problem? Also tried sand mold which was a bit more successful but left a grainey texture and some detail loss.
I have no high temp facilities at this time so I'm limited to low temp alloys.
Any suggestions or comments on how to accomplish this project?
Thanks,

Why does this seem like a setup for some link spam??? Two IDs with no posting history, 2 days apart in join date, identical structure for the forum name (all uppercase name + a number)...very odd.

BTW, lots of people use lost wax techniques for fine detail castings. Centrifugal casting is only common in high volume production. If you want high volume production with fine details, then why not just use injection molding ("die casting"), especially considering that pewter is such a low-melting point alloy? All those lovely metal toy soldiers from days gone by were done using injection molding.

And nobody would expect sand casting to offer fine detail. Since it uses (gasp) grains of sand, it would indeed create "graininess" in your casting.

    Best Regards, Georgetta

These low temp melters are cast commercialy in Silicon rubber molds using a centrifugal method. See Cast Tin for some of the supplies and equipment for this.
