Yes, this is off topic, and it should be erased tomorrow. But, today is November 11th. It's Remembrance Day. The day we honour those who fought and died for our respective countries. I wrote a blog post about it today and it makes me think.

See, I always honour Remembrance Day. My father has been dead now for over 20 years, but it's the one day I always remember him. He was just a young lieutenant - scared and green - on the USS Hornet, and bombed by Zeros from the same country where I now live. I know in my heart that Dad would approve of my choice, for he never held a grudge against the Japanese people. He even came here to visit twice in the 70s.

So ... how does Remembrance Day fit in with the purpose of this Main Discussion board? When I lived in Canada, there was nothing that brought out my contempt for stores more than their total dismissal of Remembrance Day, as they rushed to get their Christmas decorations in the window display - as it was a holiday that made them money. You could do the same - forego Remembrance Day in favour of making money.

I choose not to. No marketing messages will go out today. No promotions. The Product Creation Labs will honour this day with silence. Why? Well, there's the human aspect of it - the brave, scared, homesick soldiers who died in far away lands deserve our respect.

There's also a second aspect. It is the one that ties into this board. As a business person, are you going to choose integrity or a fast buck? And this doesn't just involve a respectful adherence to Remembrance Day, but to everything you do with your business. Wouldn't today be a good day to take a few moments of silence and reflect on these things?

I have nothing more to add to kevin's thoughts, except this:

    In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

    -- Lt.-Col. John McCrae (1872 - 1918)

I would rather have them promoting Christmas today, than having them try to make Rememberance Day (Veteran's or Armisitce Day in the US) a consumer-driven holiday.

However, it would be nice if they would honor vets, too.

I don't know if other places do it, but when I was in school there would always be a moment of silence at 11AM. One of the places I worked at, I was in charge of the radio. Each year I would turn it off at 11AM on this day. On more than one ocassion, someone yelled at me, or went in and turned it back on immediately.

At first it made me a bit mad, but then I realized it was a chance for me to explain why I did it.

Glad to see others have not forgotten.

    All the best,
    Michael

I read this little story one day, and when Veteran's day comes around I always find it. When people ask why you remember fallen soldiers on veterans day...as an ex-soldier myself, this explains it.

During World War I a soldier discovered that his friend, wounded, had fallen between the trenches out in "no man's land." Turning to his commanding officer he asked, "Sir, may I go and get him?" The officer replied curtly, "No one can live out there! I would just lose you, too!"
But ignoring the officer's command, he dashed from the safety of the trench to try to save his friend. With his friend on his shoulder, but now himself mortally wounded, he staggered and fell back into the trenches. The friend, they discovered, was now dead.
The officer, in lofty tones, rebuked him, "You fool! I told you not to go. Now I have lost both of you. It wasn't worth it!"
With his dying breath, the brave soldier replied, "But sir, it was worth it!" The officer was unimpressed. "Worth it?" He retorted. "Rubbish! Your friend is dead and you soon will be!" Then the soldier's final words. He said, "It was worth it, sir, because when I got to him, he said, 'Jim, I knew you'd come!'"

A really good way for you to 'remember' is to send some money to someplace like Disabled American Veterans or Paralyzed Veterans of America.

In addition to the maiming and mutiliation, both psychological and physical is the fact that they are treated like they are nothing special. You have no idea how many of them are homeless if they can still walk.
