Default Is This Humiliating?

I wonder whether he will prostrate himself before the Thai King which is the normal protocol for Thai subjects.

For me anyway.

Yeh, there is something that I love about bowing. Whenever I am around older generation Asians, I just start doing it on autopilot. Must be some ancient genetic throwback from my Ghengis does Rome genes.

yep, humility rocks.

God bless Obama he is so tall he has to really bend over to bow to those tiny people. He has his protocols straight.

...although I have never seen Arabs bow and don't understand why he is bowing. I don't like that one.

Yes, it's humiliating. The problem is not with the bow, but in the depth of the bow. Bam Bam's felatingly deep bow to the Japanese Emperor was an expression of subservience. Leaning the head and shoulders slightly forward would be perfectly acceptable. The White House protocol droids need to be replaced.

It shows humilty and i dont understand why people dont get this. We are arguably the most powerful nation on the planet...and at times the most hated. We need a little humility.

Gee Derek, the world knows I'm not an Obama fan, but I really can't determine if the bows are a slap in the face or not. Actions are often situational and not knowing the context in which he is greeting these people makes it impossible to determine. How well does he know these people personally? What were conversations that took place before their meeting? Pulling a picture of an action out of context is about the same as pulling a quote out of context........you can make it look like anything you want it to look like.

Uh Paul......I'm thinking this comment is okay because the thread is still up after a few days. If not please .....just delete it.

believe it or not, I actually asked some Japanese and Middle Eastern friends how "the bow" is done correctly. Silly things like this bother me and I have a lot of time on my hands some days. Anyhoo...it is customary to lower your head below the eyes of the person you are showing respect for. The Japanese folk said if you go lower than that you're just being a suck up. The Middle Eastern folks said you're simply averting your eyes towards the other's feet. They also mentioned that they consider shaking hands rude so on that count the Saudi dude was making a concession.

Ok, I can sleep properly now.

Bowing? Where?

I saw a man doing exercise to relieve back pain.

If that is the case, however, I would question his choise of time and place for doing so.

I agree with Radix, there is no problem with bowing to show courtesy to the hosts. It is the depth of the bow and how it is done. If it is overdone, it could be construed as a mockery and insult by the hosts! If Bush rather than Obama bowed like this, there would probably have been a lot of hostile comments in Japan.

I thought it was overdone - but unimportant. So normal to pick on little stuff while the big stuff goes haywire. I did think the lady has a sweet smile.

I'm still ticked off that lou dobbs was pushed out at CNN. Didn't always watch - didn't always agree - but it seems anchors who veer from the "line" are disappearing. That disturbs me....along with a lot other things, of course.

Some days I'm very disturbed...

Here is one place we agree, Kay - that is so draconian about Lou Dobbs. I think he should run for office - he is telling the truth and he is being suppressed. This is fricking wrong. This is one of the worst travesties I ever heard of.

(no need to start a political discussion here so please don't attack me for my beliefs and get this thread shut down).

... and also agree how the mental midget majority would rather talk about BS than the issues. No wonder we keep going around in circles.

I'd like to know why the Emperor is humiliating himself by abandoning the age-old Japanese tradition of bowing when greeting someone in favour of the Western practice of shaking hands?

Is it just me, or does that picture look more like he dropped something? Note that his knee is bent (not something you'd usually do when bowing) and everyone around him appears to be looking at the floor.

Anyway, I wonder if the people who complained about this did the same when his predecessor was walking about doing this...

I believe that Obama's bow, although a little overdone, is nothing more than him attempting to extend a culturally sensitive courtesy. Vice-versa for the Emperor.

Nothing subservient or humiliating about it at all, from either party.

Just another distraction IMHO which gives those with a bone to pick, another opportunity to waffle on about trivia instead of focusing on the real issues at hand.
