I just finished, and delivered, my fifth paid professional sales page. So, as befits the occasion, I'm celebrating... with a bottle of this. ![]() Le Tourment Vert. Real, honest-to-God, French absinthe. So, uh, don't expect rational conversation out of me the rest of the day. |

| Actually, I did. ![]() Pacific Highway South at the corner of 516 just after it crosses Route 5. Come on over, we'll hang out. Crossland hotel, room 102. Kind of ghetto... no fountain, no real absinthe spoons, so we're using a turkey baster and a fork. But the sugar cubes melt up a treat, and it's awesome. |

Well said. In that case, maybe after the next letter you can celebrate with a trip to Spain! [Side Note... A few years ago, a friend of mine imported some illegal & highly-potent (95% ABV) "Potcheen" from Ireland... in flasks of "Holy Water"! His whole family had been collecting (on their hands and knees no less!) the water from wells at various churches around town. Well, before flying back, he emptied 4 bottles and replaced them with some Potcheen he and his cousin bought from an old, local maker. When they arrived at the airport, the guards wanted to check the bottles, but his grandma (who obviously wan't in on the secret) was so insulted that they'd inspect her Holy Water that they eventually backed off! Man, the stuff people will do for liquor ]

A friend of mine actually had an absinthe theme party a couple of weeks back. Smoking jackets, ouija board, etc. I didn't go, but my wife thought you couldn't actually get real absinthe in the U.S. But maybe she was wrong. | |

I can't remember if I have tasted absinthe - but I can tell you this much. My favorite brand of Asti (Tosti) is an import and I can't get it here, there are others, but nothing like the Italian. Even Martini and Rossi just gets by on name. Also.........if you think you have had ouzo, if you haven't drunk it in Greece, you haven't had ouzo. The stuff they import is NOT the same thing on the tables in Athens. If you EVER want REAL ouzo....book a flight. |

I have never had absinthe. All I know about it is Hemingway had his characters drinking it all the time. Is it minty? Congrats by the way! |

| It's similar to Galliano, but honestly... most directly comparable to Nyquil. (Yes, I've drunk Nyquil recreationally. Screw you.) The major flavour components are star anise, fennel, and of course wormwood if you get "real" absinthe. Pernod's Absente is reasonably good, but I'm told Lucid is the most horrible excuse for absinthe ever made, so I avoid it... and honestly, at $70 a bottle? Le Tourment Vert was actually cheaper. The absinthe connoisseurs I've spoken to are pretty much in agreement that the ones you REALLY want are from Jade Liqueurs, but those are almost never found in stores. Now that I've got a few bottles worth of experience, that's probably next on my list. Probably the Nouvelle Orleans. I miss New Orleans. |

Congrats to you. Just wondering why you drink a love potion? Doesn't absinthe make the heart grow fonder? (Yeah, I know, I know. It's "Be Kind To Old Jokes" week). |

Actually, if you really want the tried and true Absinthe you should make it yourself! Wormwood grows as a weed here in the states in almost every part - and you can get it to "keep the rabbits out of the garden" from local garden stores. I have seen it in those large planters at the shopping mall because of it's silvery green leaves (very much like the look of a proper Louche heh heh...). Anyway, if your not adverse to building yourself a still (which is easy to do if you have a few metal shop skills) you can build a quite nice one from a Turkey fryer and a three foot length of 2 inch diameter copper pipe (the plans are on the net). Next, get yourself a gallon or two of cheap vodka that comes in gallon plastic jugs and pour into the still - you have purchased the alcohol and paid the taxes so there is no law against "re-distilling" it... The add your wormwood, anise, licorice root, and whatever spices you like in your recipe (again lots of recipes including the one used by Pernod Fils - which may be arguably the best Absinthe), let it macerate for a time, then distill it - filter through a charcoal filter and then allow the distilled product to be infused with a batch of "roman or petite Wormwood and other spices (refer to recipe), age, and enjoy. If you follow the recipes to the letter, watching that you properly discard the heads and tails during distillation, and carefully watch your pH and specific gravity measurements, you will end up with a superior product. If you know anything about beer or wine making, you should have no problem making Absinthe. And it will be the good kind... not liquid good and plenty. ![]() (and yes, this was a shameless promotion of my link) |
