I saw it on sportscenter and the French guy even admitted that he touched the ball with his hand. This will go down in Irish sports history. Is it time for instant replay in soccer?? TL |

The hand on the ball was nothing compared to the off sides on a kick. The hand was quick and even on replay very hard to see with exception to one angle that no ref had. Now the off sides could be seen by both line judges and the on field official both before during and after the kick. For that there is no excuse and all of those refs should be relieved of duties immediately.

The first contact with Thierry Henry was on his wrist, and he might have argued that the contact was "ball to hand". But when he moved his hand to guide the ball down to his feet, that was definitely "hand to ball". Really surprising behaviour for a footballer with his career and pedigree.

Hey, I rated that guy as one of the best in the world, he has gone down hill in my books. Today he says oh it should be replayed but he could have sorted it at the time. Bad Bad sportmanship |

| Yeah, I agree 100%. He could have told the ref, or he could have kept his hands off the ball in the first place. It's hard to view him as a world-class footballer after a cheap trick like that.

Hi Cheekynuts, absoultely agree, he is a disgrace and has lied more than once. I am a spurs fan so have never been a fan of henry but i at least respected him. He has now lost all respect especially after he admited that he took advantage of the situation and said it was up to the ref to stop him. Complete rubbish, the ref didnt see it so i understand that its down to henry to come out and say ''hey look it hit my hand the goal shouldnt stand'' It's happending more more unfortunatley and he has set an awful example to young kids across the world that it is actually ok to cheat and prosper! I am not irish but i am english and i hope we get drawn against the french at the world cup and knock them out! Im sure the entire nation of ireland will be cheering us on if we do! Steve. |

It's just FIFA's football. - France out of a major competition (after being out of EURO...) it's a No-No to the industry and to Monsieur Platini. So... no news here. Did you saw the Portuguese game in Bosnia? What a joke - intimidation at the airport, during the game the side ref got hit by objects by Bosnia supporters, the football field (lol?) was a dump or sand , holes and some grass BUT Fifa does not see any problem in it... Too bad for Bosnia team they lost the game, the world cup qualification and worldwide respect. Ouch. Guess they can try again in 4 years. |

There's been a lot of indignant nonsense spoken about this incident, IMO. Yes, it was cheating. Yes, it's about time that video replays were used in the sport. But please. Does anyone think that Robbie Keane, for example, would have reacted any differently if it had been him committing the offence and the Irish were given the goal? The officials are responsible for policing the match and they missed it. Clearly, the technology should have been in place to assist them, but it wasn't. It's tough on the Irish, but laying all the blame on Henry just disguises the fact that the Ireland team wasted several chances in the game to settle the result before extra time. And on the subject of cheating; how exactly is an illegal handball any worse than, for instance, a defender holding back the shirt of an attacker bearing down on goal? If the referee were to miss such a transgression, should the defender then insist that a goal be given to the opponents? What about all the diving in an effort to con the officials into awarding a free kick or penalising an opponent? It's all cheating and it happens in just about every professional match you can see. Just asking for a little perspective here. Frank |

The 'incident' has been all over the front pages here in Ireland for the past two days. The photographs are proof that it was indeed, hand ball. It's been debated on TV and Radio - endlessly. One Radio show host even called the FIFA press office live on his show the morning after. He interviewed someone in the press office who agreed that it was a travesty, but who also quoted from the FIFA rule book which says that, if the referee continues the game and it is played to the final whistle - the result stands. (Or words to that effect...) The Irish are crazy into football (soccer) and currently the national news is 1) The France v Ireland incident 2) The dreadful floods that are costing people their homes and more... This 'game' - and that's all it is, a game - should be put into perspective and, since the 'powers that be' say that the result stands - let it rest. Karen |

lol I can't help to think would an Irishman have done differently? We saw this type of hypocrisy when Eduardo of Arsenal initially got rubbed out for two games for 'cheating' against Celtic, someone who has his leg broken by a butcher a year before and therefore was understandably paranoid by any contact whatsoever...I can remember all the Celtic players and coach claiming the moral high ground how they are so innocent and hard done by and that Eduardo is a 'cheating dog'...BUT...a few days later a Celtic player got red carded for diving (I believe he dived twice two yellow cards) in the domestic league, then the coach of Celtic came out in the media and blamed Eduardo for his player getting red carded for diving...I mean come on are you serious? Yoiu can see where I'm comming from here...I'm not a supporter of the Irish cause, they would have done exactly the same as Henry, rather the blame should be levelled at the refs for not picking it up, take it on the chin and move on. |
