Gross Stat of the Day

I've never heard this before, but in the last couple of weeks I've heard it twice:

The average 8 year old mattress weighs twice as much as it did when it was brand new...This is due to the accumulation of dead skin, dried sweat and dead bed bugs.

Gross.

Oh, great, Kurt! Now I'll have to sleep on the couch!

    Thanks for sharing, uh...I think...

If I were still selling Kirby vacuums I could use that information.

i *really* don't want to think what the couch 'gross' factor would be

I have the memory foam pad, too - but what I want is a tempurpedic mattress - total memory foam - no bugs, no mites - $2500!

I love that people in walmart photosite - it's so true. Two favorites recently - one at walmart and one at the casino.

Walmart - short man with a beer gut running about two feet in front of him...black tshirt with the logo "can you take it?" - should have been "can you find it?"

Another true story from two days ago (I watched this one myself) - lady standing next to a blackjack table just looking around - very large lady with a considerable girth. As she started to walk off - something fell. It was her undies. She stood still for at least a minute or two with her drawers around her ankles, then stepped out of them, struggled to bend over and pick them up, shoved them in her purse and walked on.

A friend and I were working hard to control ourselves and we were ok until the casino manager walked up and said "damn, I thought she dropped an umbrella". We all lost it.

Since I've heard this (twice), I've been trying to think of ways to sleep standing up, like leaning in a corner or trying a hammock, or water bed. Maybe just change mattresses every time we change sheets?

PS..Sal, in a way "gross" would fit both definitions, since we are talking about the weight of the mattress. It's the gross weight of the mattress that's gross.

Actually it's dead dust mites, billions of the little guys.
Unless you ment bed bugs in the generic sense.
But then since DDT was banned bed bug populations have exploded.
Just think of all those little mites climbing all over you while you sleep:rolleyes:

Less dangerous than all that DDT sinking into your skin, Thom.

Doesn't anyone ever vacuum their mattresses any more? Or sprinkle
salt on them under the mattress cover to keep out bugs, molds, fungi, etc?

Wow! At first I didn't believe this either. I was trying to weigh my mattress after these 20+ years, but I can't even lift it.

In another life I sold Electroux vacuums...

Vacumming a mattress then dumping the contents back out on it was a sure deal closer...I could even convince them that pile on their mattress was moving if they would just look enough.

I'm gonna take my AK and blast the hell outta my bed
    before I go to bed.

    Problem solved.

    Related note...

I've "heard" that it's a similar story with carpets. Seems
they can be many times heavier than originally due to
all the various crud the vac couldn't remove.

Probably have mites in me carpet, too. Where's my AK...

      Ken,

That doesn't work. They keep coming back. I've already tried that a few times in the kitchen cupboards.

4" think memory foam mattress pad and a cover. Replace the pad annually. End of problem. Well, most of it, anyway.

Nope. I was pointed to it (again) in a phone conversation a few minutes before I saw this thread.
